It’s rude to point. But when that pointer’s the trigger of your physical discomfort, it’s easier said than done. Referring to all those knots and nodules that can cause common aches and pains, Trigger Point Therapy helps teach those nasty pointers a lesson by identifying the source of the pain and then erasing it, using various methods of manipulation. As the teacher always said, the solution is to address the root of the problem so no further damage can be done.

How it works

Existing throughout our muscles, trigger points can usually co-exist in harmony, however when the muscle is overworked or injured through physical or emotional stress, these hotspots of pain are ‘triggered’ and contract to form a pain-inflicting knot. But catching the culprit isn’t as easy as it sounds. This is because trigger points can sometimes fool the recipient as to where the point of conflict actually is and they often send their pain to another site which explains why pain is so widely misunderstood, misinterpreted and misdiagnosed.

Using a combination of physical therapy, manipulation and stretching, deactivation of the trigger point requires you to actively participate in the treatment through deep breathing, as well as identifying the presence and intensity of the pain. The therapist will then work with you to release the trigger points and to find and erase the origin of your pain by applying isolated cycles of pressure and release, until your pain is minimised.

As they say, no pain no gain and when you’re healing the root of the problem, you may feel a little worse before you feel better. The therapy can also be painful during the part where the trigger point is broken up and toxins released, so make sure to let your therapist know your pain levels throughout the treatment.

Don’t expect to be cured after one session either. Some injuries may have taken years to manifest and the older the injury, the longer it takes to heal. Nevertheless if you stick to regular treatments and make sure you complete your extra homework exercises outside of your session, you should see, and feel the benefits much faster.
