Chamneys Day Spa is a lovely venue, and I was initially warmly welcomed, however I had a horrible massage experience! It started with small things; my massage therapist showed me into a beautifully prepared room and then switched really bright lights on which ruined the atmosphere for me. She insisted that I tied my hair back, and as I didn't have a hair tie she pulled one from her own hair and asked me to wear it; demanding I return it to her immediately as the massage finished later. She was friendly, but very very chatty and openly complained about the standards of grooming the Spa expects from it's staff. The room was chilly and noisy as it overlooked the main street - obviously I expected it might be given it's location, but had hoped treatment rooms for relaxation might be set at the quieter end of the building. For me, a massage is a real treat and a time of deep relaxation, and none of this set the right tone for me to enjoy the experience.
I'm sure the massage I received might be someone's cup of tea, but I found it to be painful, rough and stress inducing! The pressure was far too firm - to the point of causing me bruises around my arms! When the therapist asked how I was finding the pressure, I asked for her to be lighter; instead she became firmer and rougher, leading me to yelp in pain at one point. I should have asked her to stop, but I optimistically hoped that at some point it would improve and become relaxing and enjoyable. Unfortunately it didn't! I will be sure to more clearly explain my expectations in the future.
On leaving, my therapist suggested that I might be stiff and achey for the next few days and that that was a good sign. Unfortunately, that is how I had arrived, and what I had been hoping to alleviate! The manager asked how my experience had been and was surprised when I said I hadn't enjoyed it. I was reassured and convinced that my experience is not the normal experience of clients, but I didn't want to take up her offer of booking with another therapist.
I would return for different treatment, but probably not another massage.
Lovely bump treatment including a back, leg and upper body massage. I felt very relaxed afterwards and the friendly staff added to the experience. Could be improved by making more of the footsoak (tepid and no massage) but good overall
