There is no set treatment time for Swedish massage – some therapists offer quick fix half hour sessions, whilst others offer indulgent two hour treatments for those in need of some serious pampering.
Like many forms of massage, a Swedish massage session will require you to remove your clothes so that the therapist can make direct contact with your skin. If you’re body shy, this might not be a great treatment for you – although it’s worth remembering that you will be able to keep your pants on, so you won’t be completely bare. The therapist will also use towels to strategically cover your body up as they work – meaning you needn’t feel like an exhibitionist. Phew!
During the massage, your therapist will combine a variety of techniques to help loosen up tense muscles and flush out toxins. Using oil or lotion to lubricate the skin, the therapist will combine gliding massage strokes with kneading, in addition to quick, firm hacking strokes. The latter drive out any toxins, whilst the smoother strokes improve circulation and help the body to flush out any nasties.
Swedish massage can help with a myriad of problems, from aches, pains and stiffness to poor flexibility and circulation. It’s also a great way of bringing stress levels down, which can in turn improve general health.
As with all treatments, it’s a good idea to check with a therapist before experiencing Swedish massage if you are ill, injured or pregnant.
