Fitness is only a hop, skip and a jump away. Skipping may be a playground favourite, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy it now you’re all grown up. All you need in order to keep fit through a good session of skipping is a rope, some energy and plenty of space. Watch out for that light fitting...

How does it work?

Skipping, also known as jump rope, is an incredibly simple way to tone up your muscles and get your heart rate going. A high intensity cardio workout, skipping can burn up to 450 calories in as little as 45 minutes. If only we could say the same for hopscotch...

Although it’s a good idea to start by jumping forwards over your rope with your feet together, you can always try to shake things up a bit by jumping backwards or even crossing your arms as you swing the rope. If you’ve got plenty of space, why not get a few friends to join in – use one rope to make things nice and easy, or add in a second for the popular playground game known as ‘Double Dutch’.

If you’re skipping to lose weight and tone up, it’s important to keep the pace up. Even though it may seem harder than you expected at first, persevere – it’ll be worth it, promise!

Is it for me?

Skipping is an ideal fitness fix for the young at heart, as well as for those looking to squeeze a workout into a short space of time. Beware though, any busty ladies will need a good sports bra to avoid doing any damage whilst jumping – and it’s also a good idea to wear a pair of trainers to absorb the impact.
