Mend your mind. We all do our best to look after our bodies and protect them from illness or injury, but sometimes we forget that our minds can be fragile too. Psychologists can help us to deal with physical, emotional and cognitive problems, so that we can get on with enjoying the good things in life.

How does it work?

There are a number of different treatments that fall under the heading of psychology. Some examples are:

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) – CBT aims to help people manage their problems by changing the way that they think and act. CBT can teach you to replace unhelpful reactions to certain events or experiences with helpful ones, so that you can stay nice and positive.

Counselling psychology – some psychologists use counselling techniques to assist with problems such as anxiety, fear and sadness. A psychological counselling session involves talking about different events and life changes to help identify the root of a person’s problems and the best way in which to solve them.

Occupational therapy – this form of therapy uses creative activity to help treat or rehabilitate those with physical or mental illnesses. By teaching people to develop their skills and abilities, occupational therapy can help to overcome certain psychiatric symptoms and chronic pain – making life a bit easier to deal with.

Is it for me?

A psychologist can help you to tackle problems such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders and drug misuse.

Psychology can help people of all ages. There are lots of psychologists who specialise in treating children and adolescents, so young people needn’t feel intimidated by the thought of therapy.

Good to know

Although psychologists often work with people who are suffering from physical or mental illnesses, they are not permitted to prescribe medication.
