Golf description

Tee time. Golf is a precision sport played using clubs and a small white ball. The aim of the game is to hit the ball into each of the holes on the specially designed golf course, using as few strokes as possible. Of course, it’s not as easy as it sounds...

How does it work?

Golf is usually played on a specially designed course. Typically, a golf course consists of either nine or 18 holes, into which the players must hit the ball in a specific order. Reckon you could do that without much difficulty? It’s worth bearing in mind that the course has been designed to prevent players from having an easy ride – some holes do not have a direct line of sight, whilst others are surrounded by longer grass to make them harder to target.

A game of golf begins with the players teeing off. It may sound rude - but it actually means hitting the ball off a small peg called a tee. A variety of different clubs is then used to steer the ball around the course, aiming to avoid any hazards and to complete the game in as few strokes as possible.

Players usually walk between the holes on the course to take their next shot – however, if the distance is considerable, they may opt to travel on special golf buggies. A caddy may also accompany each player to carry equipment and provide any advice if necessary.

Is it for me?

Golf isn’t just for ageing men – it can be played by anyone, regardless of age or gender. Playing by yourself can be a therapeutic way to unwind after a hard week – whilst group play is a sociable way to hone your skills.

Good to know

Golf, as we know it today, originated in 15th century Scotland. It was originally frowned upon, as it distracted young people from learning archery.

Mini golf, crazy golf, clock golf and even the snooker-golf hybrid ‘Snolf’ are all slightly less serious ways to have a bit of fun knocking a ball around.

Nowadays it is possible to study golf course design and to achieve a degree or diploma. We reckon it’s ‘worth a shot’ if you’re considering a career change...
