Chakra massage originated in Asia and is designed to awaken the body’s energy systems, or Kundalini, allowing for natural healing. As well as having a relaxing effect, this form of therapeutic massage revives and rejuvenates – leaving you ready to deal with whatever the world throws at you.
A Chakra energy massage works by summoning energy from the base of the spine and helping it to diffuse throughout the body. Traditionally viewed as a curled snake, this Kundalini energy needs to be released in order to achieve its potential. In the West, this is done by working with seven different chakras, all representing different emotional and physical properties. However, there are varying numbers of chakras in other practices – it all depends on whereabouts in the world you are.
During a chakra energy massage, you will be asked to lie on a massage table. Your therapist will begin by giving you a foot massage, followed by a short session of reflexology to rebalance the body and work out any knots. They will then use a variety of different massage techniques to target the different chakras and unlock your Kundalini energy. They may also guide you through some Tantric breathing exercises to help with the process, so prepare to take some nice, deep breaths...
If you are looking to find a method of relaxation that will also leave you feeling revived and energised, a chakra massage may be just what you’re after. However, if you find you’re a bit sceptical about treatments involving energy flow, it's probably best to stick to mainstream massage.
As with all forms of therapeutic massage, it’s important to consult your therapist first if you suffer from any illnesses, injuries or are pregnant – they will advise you as to whether the treatment is appropriate for you.
Chakra massage sometimes goes by the name of Tantric massage. It has links with Kundalini yoga, which is also concerned with the release of spinal energy.
