Breathe in...and breathe out. We all know that taking a deep breath in times of stress can help us to feel calmer – so it’s no surprise that practising some simple breathing techniques could have a positive effect on our wellbeing. Time to exercise those lungs...

How does it work?

There are many different breathing techniques that can be learned to help alleviate stress and improve mental and physical wellbeing. These techniques often focus on using the abdomen to breathe, encouraging you to take much deeper breaths. Exercises are designed to help you develop a good rhythm when breathing, and to create the right balance between inhalation and exhalation. And the great news is that you can practise these exercises anywhere, whether you are on a bus or at your desk – fantastic for good health on the move.

Is it for me?

Learning to control your breathing can improve your general health as well as helping to address specific problems. Breathing techniques may help to ease the symptoms of stress, anxiety, asthma, allergies, insomnia, depression and lung conditions – so that you can feel more like your normal self again.

Listen up, mums to be - breathing techniques can also be helpful for managing pain and encouraging relaxation during birth, and are often taught in birth preparation classes such as Lamaze or HypnoBirthing.

Good to know

Breathing techniques may be combined with other practices such as meditation and yoga to enhance relaxation and help you reach a deeper state of calm.
