Zap the zits and banish the blemish. Acne is a common skin condition which usually affects the face, back, neck, chest and shoulders. Possible reasons why acne may occur could be due to stress, hormones, a bad diet and bacteria. So, if you have a spot of bother don’t get all worked up about it, it will only get worse.

How does it work?

Acne is caused by the over activity of the small oily glands, otherwise known as sebaceous glands, that surround the fine hairs on the face that secrete an oily substance called sebum on to your skin. The purpose of sebum is to keep skin and hair lubricated and soft. However, excessive amounts of sebum will clog the pores creating the ideal environment for bacteria to live and breed, causing those terrible blotchy breakouts that often leave scars once they’ve disappeared.

There are a wide range of effective treatments available to help banish the blemish from facial treatments to facial acupuncture and chemical skin peels. However, each treatment varies with how it works but the treatment chosen will depend on how severe your acne is. A good therapist will help you to choose the right treatment for your skin condition.

In general, all acne treatments have the same goal - to unblock clogged pores, remove excess grease and bacteria and reduce inflammation – all of which cause those nasty pimples.

Most often, your treatment will take place in a private treatment room and you may be asked by your therapist to lie down or recline. Treatment times vary enormously – anything from a ten-minute facial to a one hour chemical skin peel session.

Specialist treatments

Here are some of the most popular treatments that have been recommended to help tackle acne:

  • Facials - Galvanic - A Galvanic Facial does everything a normal facial would – cleanse, tone and exfoliate, but has a few extras to its name; like the fact it directs different currents into your skin to decongest and rehydrate porous patches.
  • Dermaplaning - Dermaplaning involves scraping away the top layers of your skin, to expose silky, beautiful new skin underneath using a small, sharp handheld instrument called a dermatome to gently scrape off layers of skin.
  • Chemical Skin Peels - A chemical skin peel involves the application of a chemical that causes your skin to peel – the chemical strips away the surface of the skin which carries any bacteria. The chemical solution is then removed, often with an abrasive cleanser to remove all of the peeled skin leaving a healthier and less mottled appearance.
  • Microdermabrasion - This treatment smoothes out the skin and unclogs pores using a mechanical device which acts like a vacuum to the skin. First, your face will be treated with a moisturising lotion to soften up the upper layers of the skin and then the microdermabrasion unit is run in smooth, firm strokes over your skin vacuuming away all the unwanted dirt, leaving a softer, tighter and cleaner feel.
  • Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture - Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is a painless, non-surgical method of reducing the signs of the aging process, although it is also a recommended treatment for those who suffer from acne. This treatment involves the insertion of tiny, hair-fine needles into specific points on your face to manipulate your body’s energy flow which drains away toxins and cleans up your circulation.
