Nothing is more joyful than the arrival of a new baby but there are some aspects of pregnancy that nobody enjoys — and stretch marks is one of them. Furthermore, pregnancy is not the only cause of them. However, help is at hand — laser stretch mark reduction treatment can significantly reduce their appearance.
Stretch marks — how, where and why?
Stretch marks are tiny scars caused by the tearing of the dermis that happens when the skin is rapidly stretched. They are most widely associated with pregnancy when between 75% and 90% of women can expect to develop them, with teenage mothers most at risk. But there are other causes and the abdomen is not the only area where they may appear. Hormonal changes and body shape changes during puberty or as a result of muscle building can also lead to marking.
Common places where stretch marks can appear include:
They tend to appear in places where the body stores fat and when they first appear they are reddish, brown or purple. Over time they may fade to white, pale pink or light brown but they never completely disappear naturally.
Treating stretch marks
There are many treatments available for stretch marks, such as dermabrasion, retinoid prescriptions or surgical intervention. However, in our experience the most effective way to reduce the appearance of stretch marks is through laser treatment.
Laser can be used to target red, brown and white stretch marks. Some may completely disappear, while others will become significantly less noticeable. Skin texture is improved and colour is faded.
