Massage or osteopathy?
I have some pain I would like resolved
If you have some pain that you would like resolved, osteopathy is likely to be more helpful. This is because a case history will be taken and an assessment will be carried out in order to discover what is causing the problem. This is essential in order to treat the problem effectively. We also need to ensure, as far as it is possible to do so, that you are safe to treat.
I would just like to relax
If you would just like to relax, massage is most likely to be the best option.
Your therapist will provide massage to induce a deeply relaxing experience and enhance your sense of well being. Positive touch has been shown to have many beneficial effects including lowering blood pressure and the hormone cortisol, which is released in response to stress.
A variety of techniques and pressure will be used, taking into account your personal preferences and how your tissues respond. You can tailor the massage, for example, full body, or neck, back and shoulders only.
Massage can develop awareness of tension held within muscles of people who are unable to relax. If this is something you experience during a treatment, your therapist can be help you to develop your ability to relax your muscles.
Deep Tissue Massage
The pressure used will be agreed between you and the therapist. The therapist will not use pressure that she feels will be detrimental to you or painful.
It is always important to understand why we have pain, sometimes massaging tight muscles can help relieve pain, but it is important to consider that pain can sometimes be a result of strained and sprained tissues and loosening further with massage can be detrimental. Also, sometimes the body will attempt to protect an injured area by tightening surrounding muscles so it is really important that your therapists asks the right questions to understand the pain that you have.
One hour massage includes some basic health screening questions at the beginning, to ensure, as far as it is possible that you are safe to treat. Further questions may be asked if you are asking for massage to treat a particular problem. The hour also includes a few minutes at the end to enable you to get changed, leave the room and the therapist to set up the room in time for the next client's appointment.
