Shiatsu is a Japanese pressure point therapy based on the Chinese meridian system. Western shiatsu is generally much gentler than the Japanese style and is a very supportive style of treatment, ideal for emotional problems and those problems in which the body and emotions interact in a negative way. If you have a sore shoulder for a week, it may only be a sore shoulder; if you have it for 6 months or a year, it will affect you emotionally. Equally, an emotional problem can surface as a physical issue, with (for example) headaches, stomach aches or menstrual cramps caused or exacerbated by stress. Shiatsu can also be very beneficial in conjunction with tui na; the stronger tui na techniques can help to shift problems and the shiatsu to give support to ensure the body feels able to assimilate the change.
