My hair is naturally very dark brown, how can I lighten it by two shades and keep it ash?

My hair is very dark brown, almost black and I want to make it a lighter ash brown, using tint only (not bleach or highlights). I have been doing this and it keeps getting a reddish brown tinge to it. I want to know if there is a way of getting it ash without using bleach as it is very damaged. Can anyone help?
