This the worst gym I have ever been to! I have lived all over and this club truly is shocking, in particular the staff. Shocking!

I won't bore you with the details of my circumstances but I would think twice before I spent any money / time in the club. I have called / visited the club at least seven (7) times to try and resolve some isues with my membership - my paperwork has been lost, people don't turn up to appointments, the membership woman (Anya) is never around and when she is cannot return your calls / be bothered to sort out any issues.

There is another gym in Notting Hill, Body Works West which is supposed to be excellent.

I suggest you try that. Honestly, you would think they do not want your business.

I am a fan of Dove Spas but I will never return to this location. First it was hard to find and not in that great of an area. What made me give is an "oh no" rating was when I arrived there was no one at the Dove Spa reception desk. I asked the Virgin Active receptionists and they blanked me. I sat down for about 5 minutes (still no one at the Dove Spa reception) so I tried to ask the Virgin Active receptionists again and the 2 women receptionists kept going right on with their conversation ignoring me. When I finally got their attention, they told me that it "was not their job" to answer any of my questions and to "stop bothering them". How unprofessional! What ended up happening was the therapist was 15 minutes late! She told me that the prior client had come late (still no excuse in my opinion to be 15 minutes late) but that she wouldn't take any time off my treatment. The therapist was very talented and my facial was wonderful but I will not return to this location because of the horrible Virgin Active staff and lack of any Dove Spa staff other than the therapist (she told me that she was the only Dove Spa employee working that day). Mayfair & South Kensington Dove Spa locations are much nicer and I would highly recommend both of those as the Dove Spa facial is a great experience.

Went for swimming classes with my baby at Virgin. Clean pool and tidy changing rooms. Feels very big and a bit impersonal but for being a chain like Virgin its ok. Liked the Notting Hill venue better than High Street Kensington (better lighting, bigger pool etc).

I went this past Sunday for a 10.30am Power plate class. Turns out I was the only one there, and although the power plate machines are in one open area of the stretching section, the class is directed by one of the personal trainers. I cannot remember the name of my trainer (Scott?) - an Aussie aspiring foottballer who almost made me puke cause he worked me very hard.

Since I was the only one, he customised the Power plate workout for my needs and goals, and I have to say that i was completely crushed at the end (in a good way). Legs, chest, arms, cardio, abs/core - I got a full body workout. I have done the powerplate a few times, and although i have heard and read that there is not much cardio, I think the new techniques employed by trainers actually concentrate on getting your heart rate up to burn some calories as well.

One note on the scheduling - the woman at the front desk who answered the phone told me the class begins at 10.40am, as does the online schedule, but for two weeks running, the trainer beging the class at 10.30am...(I know cause i missed the class last week!). So, Virgin Active need to get their act together on this one...

To me The Virgin Active in Notting Hill looked pretty impressive from the outside, but it didn't managed to meet those high expectations. It felt like the cardio-machines were overrepresented compared to the hidden and quite small free weight area. This is definitely not a gym I would turn to if I were a hardcore builder, but then again, I figured that isn't really Virgin Actives main targets either. Though if you are a stressed out 35-years-old-father-of-two who are just looking to do do some cardio workout and occasionally participate in one of the many group exercises on offer, this is probably a good choice for you.
