I just read the review about Virgin Active Ealing and find it hard to believe the club was that bad I have recently joined back at the gym and thought I’d check it out as this is my local Virgin Active.

Firstly I was met in the restaurant with one of the staff who was really friendly sorry I forgot her name but a lovely young girl who seemed to know everything about the club. We sat down and had a coffee and talked about what I was looking for before she showed me around. The club has apparently just had a re-fit and looks really nice. The studios have funky pictures on the walls and the cycling studio has pictures of mountains on the wall. The Gym is well proportioned and has everything I need for my workout.

The club was easy to get to and if you drive you can park right outside the door although you do have to pay. My membership is really cheap at only £70 a month which is really affordable for me.

I would recommend this club to my friends and really like the friendly vibe.

I've just joined the Ealing gym but have previously been a member of the Acton one. The latter is much bigger and luxurious but the Ealing one is closer for me. They've just refurbed the changing rooms and they are fine but could do with a couple of private cubicles for when you need personal space. Actually I don't understand how women walk around starkers like they think they have fab bodies. Most of them who do that really don't and its quite off putting. That's an aside. What I really wanted to mention is the new spinning studio. Well, What a lovely room! 40 or so new bikes too! Great you may say until you actually try a spinning class. Apart from a serious lack of competant instructors (I'm sure I could do better and I'm not even trained), the sound quality in there is truly atrocious. The music gets so distorted by the lack of thought to acoustics that you end up with a headache at the end of the class. You can also only hear about 10% of what the instructor is saying (in quieter moments) as the output of the mic in competition with the tinny sounding music hurts your eyes due to the severe distortion! I I leant over to a guy next to me and said 'can you hear what he's saying?' He said 'not really'. So I know I'm not alone. I tried talking to the centre manager but for some very strange reason he is in denial! Even the spinning instructor totally agreed with me. What a terrible shame to spend so much money on a new room, new bikes and the myride cinematic experience and no tto give any proper thought to the sound the music system produces. Music is intrinsic to a good spinning class more so than to any other class based excercise. I have done RPM and spinning for a number of years (best place Holmes Place in Streatham and it has no fancy room) so I feel I'm qualified to speak. I have also heard that serious spinners are staying away from the Virgin experience. What a terrible missed opportunity. I hope someone higher up will read this and do something about it !!!!! For now, I'm going to have to miss spinning, a class I used to really love.

This is my local Virgin Active and I use this regularly just due to location. By choice I would use one of the central London ones, which are much better looked after. The gym itself is fine. Bit on the small side but good selection of equipment. Very occasionally I've had to wait for a running machine. I've been to a few yoga classes which are good. Gym staff are very friendly and helpful on the whole.
The pool is nice and clean and I often get a lane to myself. The main thing that lets Virgin Active Ealing down is the changing rooms. Bite the bullet and refurbish these. Well overdue. Lockers are being slowly upgraded as locks need replacing. But showers is where they should concentrate. Not checked and cleaned often enough, covered in limescale, mouldy sealant, very mouldy ceiling panels (don't look up), shampoo not very nice (see Virgin Active Moorgate for good shampoo), and to add insult to injury towels are not included (have to pay more). I pay £67/month on a corporate membership and currently doesn't feel like value for money. Would be if the changing rooms were nicer and towels were included. Considering a move to another gym when contract up at the end of the year.

We take our two year old son for the family swim on a Sunday morning which is well managed and lots of fun. This part of the package feels good value for money as we pay £5 a month for the little one to be able to come once a week and we go nearly every week. Definitely cheaper than going to a grotty public pool. The pool is clean and a good size and children's floats and toys are provided. Showers on the other hand are pretty terrible for a luxury gym. Covered in limescale, mouldy sealant, mouldy ceiling panels, cracked tiles, not checked and cleaned often enough. In definite need of a refurb.
We usually go to the cafe afterwards and is very family friendly with appropriate menu, children's tables, high chairs, good prices, loyalty card. There is also a creche service for a few sessions a but have not used so far. The creche facilities look really good though.

The gym is alright but the crèche is not good. They are not very good with changing nappies for babies. The care takers should be more deligent about young children specially when they are crying.

Virgin Active in Ealing has been resting on the laurels of Holmes Place for too long. They have kept prices at the Holmes place 'luxury' level (I pay about £90 per month for a rolling one month contract) but have invested very little in the facilities.

The gym floor, studio and cafe facilities are adequate, but the men's changing room and wet areas are simply unacceptable at any price, let alone ~£1000 a year. The smell is awful, there is extensive damage to lockers, showers are often broken or only run cold and the steam room is corroded and stained. These facilities obviously haven't been upgraded since the late nineties (I recognise the fittings and fixtures from other Holmes Places)

It is one thing to be run down, but it seems that little effort is made to make the best of what is there. I use the gym on Sunday mornings, and the shower areas look (and smell) like they haven't been cleaned after the Saturday night rush. I have used Virgin Active gyms in the centre of London, and these are always clean and tidy, so either the Ealing branch is poorly managed or Virgin Active only spends money on its 'prestige' locations.

It's not all bad; the adult and child swimming on Sunday mornings is great, and I had a fantastic personal trainer (£40 per hour) called Sue, who has now sadly moved to a different gym.
