I have now been to Tomato 4 times, 3 for highlights and once for a haircut, and I can safely say I have never been disappointed. No, it's not a salon which boasts exceptional customer service, but you can expect a choice of drinks, a wide selection of magazines, and a hair stylist who really listens to what you want. The place itself is nothing special - the decor is a bit naff and there is a slightly overpowering smell of incense - but if you're looking for a cheap salon with great results, this is the place to come. I'm a student, and with prices like £30 for half head and £45 for full head of highlights, Tomato is an absolute gem both in London and compared to salons up North (where I study). I would highly recommend it to those on a budget, who aren't too bothered about the actual experience of getting your hair done. At the end of the day, I've always come out of Tomato happy with the results, and that's what matters!

Beware!

Nice people and all but I asked for short at the sides with a parting and came out with some extreme Nathan Barley style undercut. I'd taken my glasses off while she was cutting, then when she was finished it was slicked down, so it wasn't until I got home I realised what a monstrosity it was. I looked like a total prat. I'm really angry because it was cut so close at the side and so long on the top now I've had to cut it really really short myself. It's not what I asked for and now there's little I can do about it. I have to walk around with a crew cut until it grows back. If you go here be sure to very slowly describe exactly what you want (as if you're talking to a toddler), watch them like a hawk and check carefully before you leave.

Having read some of the other reviews I thought I should add my experience of visiting Tomato.

It may well ahve very loud music and awful incense sticks burning but I have always had a great cut and colour when ive been here.

I have blonde highlights and can be very tempremental when it comes to my hair and if its not exactly how I like it I will let you know.

However I have never had a bad colour or cut here, they get the blonde perfectly matched to skin tone which isnt an easy task even for the most experienced hairdressers.

It is also very cheap in comparison to other salons in Putney so for the price I think I can put up with the loud music and incense sticks burning away!

Although you find the odd stylist who is good there are a lot of untrained or unvetted people in that place who should not be let loose on unsuspecting customers
In all fairness, I had one lady do my hair who actually did a great job but she then left the salon (probably to work somewhere better). I tried someone else who clearly didn't know much about haircuts, a complete disaster, as the hair dresser who had to tidy up her mess confirmed to me. She tried to cover up her holes with loads of wax- I left the salon looking like I hadn’t washed my hair in weeks. Not great if you’re on your way to meet a client. The next person I tried was rude and kept burning me with the hair dryer- wouldn't adjust the angle of the hair dryer despite my flinching every few seconds and despite my comments. Before, when he highlighted my hair he made me hold my head in crooked positions for long periods of time. I said I was in pain and asked him to spin my chair around so he could get to the area he was doing more easily but he said it wouldn't be much longer- well, it was another 15 minutes of cramp and discomfort after that. I left with a really bad headache. They also slag off customers with other customers listening. Don't they realize how unprofessional that is?
I would never go back there and feel the public should be warned about that place. You might find the odd decent stylist, but it's more like Russian roulette. I believe that most people in there have not been fully trained or have been kicked out of other hair salons that wouldn't tolerate their rudeness, lack of skill or general unprofessionalism.
I've heard similar stories from other people, including other hair dressers in Putney. Go to Tomato’s at your own peril. It may be cheap but you only get what you pay for. I’m surprised this place hasn’t been closed down yet. It can’t be legal to not inform paying customers that they will get their hair done but someone who doesn’t quite know what they are doing.

Sounds like you had a bad experience - did you speak with the manager of the salon?

No, I didn't. I got the impression (not just because of my experiences, but also because of talking to to other people who had bad experiences there) that this wouldn't have made a difference to the general standard in this place.

I went to Tomato because I was recommend by a friend. I was a little skeptical because with blonde hair if you get it wrong it could be a disaster. But even though the salon is extremely well priced the foils were done extremely well. I am very happy with my hair and I have decided to become a regular customer. Thanks tomato team. x
