My friend and I went on a spa day to unwind and relax from our usual busy days at work. The setting was lovely and facilities ok. But we were abit disappointed to find out when we arrived there was a very noisy aqua aerobics class in the pool! The rest of the day was nice and quiet and the lunch we had was very nice. Our treatments were quite late at 4.30pm. So when we arrived back at the changing rooms all chilled and wanting a shower in peace, we were more than disappointed to find the changing an shower area had been taken over by children for swimming lessons! All I would recommend is before you book check the times of their classes etc!

Pro's: We paid £120 each which included a 1 night stay, back massage, evening meal and breakfast. Great Value!!
The rooms, the Spa and the facilities are lovely, the staff there were very welcoming and the massage was amazing!!
Cons: The food and drinks in the bar area are very over priced for what you get and the inclusive evening meal menu wasn't very good, to eat off a different menu you get the first £25 off and anything after that you have to pay extra for! The steak was £25 alone therefore we ended up paying an extra £30 towards our meal. Although the food was lovely!
There was a wedding being held there the night we stayed and unfortunately we were kept awake until the early hours by people running and shouting down the hallways.

Beautiful spacious rooms. Lovely lounge bar with balconies and peaceful views of the open countryside. Restaurant very nice. Spa treatments and facilities excellent. Pity there is no jacuzzi though.

I was disappointed by the spa itself as the pool and aroma rooms were very disappointing. The treatment was excellent but the staff were so rushed through the whole hotel. Dinner was lively but the wait was dreadful and in the morning no staff arrived until 8:15 so much for 7:30!

The hotel had a powercut so we couldn't check in. We arrived at around 3.15 and were advised to wait in the bar and get a drink whilst we waited for an update. A member of staff eventually came round to advise we had a number of options:
Go to a sister hotel in chester but there wouldn't be enough room for everyone
Go home and rearrange or get a refund
Or wait for a bit to see if the electric came back on but there was no guarantee it would and in that case we would have to go home. The lady who came to advise is of the situation seemed to think it was relatively funny....
We chose to stay for a bit and then ended up going home. When we advised the hotel reception, the gentleman was very hospitable and said the hotel would look after us when we returned.
I received a phone call on the Sunday from Adam, the hotel manager. When I said we would be returning but only if we were to get something extra as I had paid extra for a valentines weekend and it had been ruined. He explained that as I had paid for the stay through a company they only receive a percentage. I said that it was the companies fault and his response was "well with all due respect miss Wiles, it's not my fault either!"
I understand that the powercut was not the hotels fault, however I was very disappointed with how they dealt with the situation. We were due to stay Saturday night, it is now Wednesday night and I have not had a phone call from the hotel to rearrange.
Very poor customer service

Sadly the pool is used heavily by locals. Our peace was interrupted by school swimming sessions, an Aqua gym class (loud music, packed full of retirees) and then hoards of families from 3:15. This should be made clear when booking, which it wasn't. The pool was also on the chilly side for a spa. The thermal suite rooms were good, loved the relaxation room upstairs and the lounge area (although only instant sachets of coffee available). No jacuzzi, unfortunately. The food was good, but I'd have been extremely disappointed if I had paid £15 for my meal as the portion of salmon was minuscule! I was starving again by 3:30 and there were only oranges available by that point in the lounge. The staff were extremely friendly and courteous. The massage was good, but not the best spa massage that I have received. Whilst it was lovely to relax upstairs in the relaxation room, you had to trail downstairs to use the pool changing room toilets - again, not fun when full of Aqua gym attendees, schools etc. Also, only one towel was given out on arrival, meaning that I had to go upstairs to request a second for a shower (having used the first by the pool edge).

Picture your ideal spa getaway.....relaxing by the pool to the noise of boisterous boys bombing in the water, unwind in a crowded steam room which includes children. But don't worry, they're only allowed in between 2pm and 5pm.
Now, lie back, relax and get ready for your ‘45’ minute massage. Enjoy 35 minutes of the unremarkable fingers of one either inexperienced or unenthusiastic 'masseuse'.
Put a special code in your locker but beware…you may have to ask management to help out with their ‘endless’ problems of unlocking them for you.
Onto your evening meal in the understaffed, busy restaurant, where you will seek your waiter’s attention for ALL your needs including the starter bowls which will sit, un-cleared, for 45 minutes.
Finally, fall asleep to the whirring sound of the wedding disco (or is it the heating system?) whatever it is, it’s going all night.
And breathe! You're finally home...... Not your idea of a relaxing spa break? No, ours neither. We will NOT return to the Macdonald Portland in Tarporley!

A lovely day out with girl friends. Didn't feel busy or overcrowded which allowed a relaxing experience. Staff exceptionally helpful and lunch was exceptional. Will definitely return.
