Felt like I arrived with a stress level of 2 yet left with a stress level of 10!!!!
Absolutely disgraceful experince!!!! I purchased this day as a deal on wowcher as a gift for a friend and a stress release for myself. The voucher stated that it included a nights stay at a hotel including breakfast, a facial, hot stones body massage and light lunch. Firstly, when I telephoned the spa to book there was no answer for the whole day!! When I finally got in touch the staff were very unhelpful said they'd ring back to confirm if the hotel was available and 3 weeks later still nothing. I had to ring them back and also the hotel to check if they had booked me in. Secondly, the hotel did not include breakfast which the hotel said was because the spa had not booked or paid for brakfast. Thirdly, the light lunch is not lunch, it's a cake or a bowl of tasteless soup. Fourthly, they advertised that they use Elemis products but didn't, they used Hara, which burnt my skin during the facial. As I can only use Elemis products, this was why I had chose this paricular spa. When I asked why they hadn't used Elemis, I was told by the therapist we use our standard product unless you upgrade. I was not offered an upgrade, nevertheless they advertise they use Elemis so I expected I'd get Elemis. Then, as if this wasn't enough, I was given the wrong treatments, they were cut short and I was left sitting in the lounge for 2 hours with no approach from any member of staff. The lady in charge came in to the lounge after the 2 hours and asked me if I was just relaxing, when I told her I still had another treatment she blamed the therapist for the mistake, yet the therapist blamed her!!! When I finally got the treatment, while I was being massaged there was a strong smell of cigarette smoke in the room. I was then distubed by the therapists cigarette lighter falling on the floor out of her pocket. Everybody is entiled to smoke, im not arguing that, but this is so unprofessional and unpleasant during a therapeutic treatment. As a beauty therapist myself , I was apauled by my experince at the spa and would not return if I was paid. On my departure (2hours later than expected) I complained to the person in charge. Basically, she had an answer and excuse for everything and did not seem to be bothered by my complaint. I will be taking this complaint further as I paid 200 pounds for a day that was suppose to be relaxing, yet was nothing but upsetting and disappointing. Looking at the reviews from other people, it seems I'm not the only person to have a terrible experince. Please if you're considering this spa, look elsewhere!!

Thank you for your feed back, I was going to take my daughter and myself for a relaxing treat together before she goes to university in September I am so glad I read the reviews and your review has made my mind up and without it we would have had a bad experience wasted journey and a waste of money! Thank you once again x

This is the worst "Spa" experience I have ever had or I wouldn't be motivated to write this. I am shocked at how bad it was. I went here on a Groupon offer with my partner which was meant to be at least 60minutes of treatment each made up of three treatments. One main treatment and two 20min treatments. They lasted 30mins from start to finsh because I timed it. As some one who works in the industry I know that customers expectations can vary and businesses can have off days but there's a lot more at fault here than been short changed on treatment times..............a lot more. I know we were not the only ones short changed on our treatment times as we were there long enough to see many couples in and out with the same timings as us so I presume this is their strategy to get people through the door. The worst thing is the filth of the place. I have never laid on such dirty oily bottom and top sheets in my life and felt like many others had been on them before! Yes I know! I mentioned that the room was cold but they had no way of heating it, my Lunch - a bowl of watery tasting soup I left as did the couple that were being shipped through with us. They were upselling most people to robes and slippers for £5 a pop (thank fully I had declined) as if the sheets in the rooms are anything to go by I would say that the robes rarely get washed either. The massage couches were crumbling to pieces..seriously I am still in shock as to how bad this place is. It may have been good a couple of years ago but the converyor belt approach and lack of hygiene make this a place to avoid. I was so disappointed I did mention it before leaving and will also be asking for a refund which I have NEVER done before.

Don't go there! It is neither a luxurious spa nor a pleasant experience. Place is quite grubby, we were given dirty slippers, parts of the treatment equipment had mold growing on them and smelt of mildew, you have to wait for the ONLY changing room in the whole place for someone else to finish. I was embarassed that I had suggested going there, even on a groupon deal you'd have to pay me to go there again. Attitude of the staff and management to complaints is just to ignore them. What a shame, wont be in business long if they carry on like that. Needs a good clean and some serious customer service training. Wasted potential...

skin felt great after the mud treatment and the steam capsule and surroundings were good. unfortunately they did have staff off sick so it was a little unorganised and we were rather rushed and had to wait around until it warmed up but overall good experience

An extremely relaxing environment right in the centre of Southport though once inside, it feels like the outside is a world away. Plenty of treatment rooms available, friendly staff and certainly comes highly recommended!

we went end of march 2012 on a living social deal £35 each for a facial massage and light lunch. however we paid on the day £35 to use the jacuzzi which is in the old synagogue. we had the jacuzzi to ourselves for an hour - cold water and fruit kebabs were brought half way through which was nice. it was a lovely relaxing part of the day. we then waited 50 minutes for our massage and facial as the therapist said our appointment was 12 instead of 1230 she got this wrong - not impressed at all with this. the massage and facial was lovely, the homemade soup was lovely but we asked for it to be microwaved as it was cold. glad i never paid £10 to upgrade to the buffet it wasn't worth it. we have just bought a deal with wahanda which is amazing value £39 for 2 people same deal.

Venue was lovely, therapist was great. But the treatment was quick and not very good value for money wouldnt recommend to anyone or visit again. Pity. On the plus side the food for lunch was excellent and the cook was very friendly and helpful.

Bought the voucher for my mum who thoroughly enjoyed the treatment. I booked myself in for something as well and found the whole experience to be wonderful. Fabulous staff, fabulous building...can't wait to visit again!

Just returned from a lovely day at the spa with my mum. We had an hour in the candlelit spa pool, rasul, back massage, facial and 3 course buffet lunch, it was a lovely relaxing day and well worth the money. The staff were very professional and made you feel special - we didn't feel rushed at all. The food was delicious, freshly cooked and there was lots of choice - soup, crusty bread, salmon, chicken breasts, new potatoes, salad, gammon ham, pasta... and lemon cheesecake mmmm! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing, pampering day out!

Really nice spa - good atmosphere and nice staff. Treatments are really nice and I felt so relaxed and refreshed at the end of it. Although I didn't have lunch - I would recommend it as the smell was lovely! Will definitely be coming back soon.

I bought a Moroccan Rasul deal as a treat for my husband and I. When I phoned to make a booking the lady on the other end of the phone was very helpful and also informed me that for a discounted price of £28/person we could also get an hour long back massage that would take place immediately after the Moroccan Rasul. I went for it.

Unfortunately, our experience at Portland Hall Spa was terrible. The towels, bathrobes and slippers that we were given were old and tattered. The staff were cold and unapproachable. We were just thrown into the Moroccan Rasul without any proper attention or instructions. After the Rasul we waited around for a good while until we were shown to the treatment room for our back massages. The massage lasted just about 30 minutes - despite being advertised for an hour long massage. The girl who was massaging me had long nails that dug into my back for the entire treatment.

When we were leaving I was going to ask for the name of the manager so I could make them aware of our experience but all five people that had been milling around the reception desk all day were no where to be seen! We waited several minutes expecting someone to at least see us out but no one came!

I would strongly discourage anyone else from going to Portland Hall Spa. The facilities, ambience, treatments were poor and worst of all the staff were very unhelpful and had no concept of customer care. I would also discourage Wahanda from partnering with them in the future.

Overall, a very relaxing experience; staff very friendly & excellent value for money. Would definately recommend! The exfoliation scrub left my skin feeling really smooth & refreshed, & the massage left me feeling stress free. The spa is in an old synagogue which creates a calm & relaxed atmosphere; lovely relaxing music, which i felt could have been a little louder when having our treatments.

Upon driving upto Portland Hall Spa we were put off, due to the exterior looking run down. However, walking through the doors and things improved. The interior was calming and soothing. We started our treatments with a resual mud therapy, then a deep tissue back massage and finally a facial. Each treatment surpassed the previous one and we both left feeling totally relaxed and pampered.

Beautiful old Synagoge lovely atmosphere, nice tea by arrival. The staff really made me, my boyfriend and mum and dad welcome. We went last year in the easter holiday's. The bubble bath candle light experience felt luxuorious eating fruit on sticks dipped in a chocolate sauce and cold mineral water next to pool side. Afterwards we all enjoyed a lovely aromatic backmassage. The treatment rooms were in eastern style and looked beautiful. I had a quick peep in the Hammam area and think I will try the Morrocan mud rasul next time for two, as the facilities look great, it looks like you step in another Culture! For lunch we paid twelfe ahead and enjoyed a nice organic fresh cooked buffet, carrot and coriander soup and bean salads. We had a lovely time at Portland hall and definitely come back, even though the sauna was broken when we went!

When we arrived was met by owner who advised us the spa wasnt working, I think we should have been informed of this prior to our visit. The robes we were given where hard and not soft and fluffy like we had imagined, the slippers were grubby and it was evident they had been worn by previous guests. Lunch, I can tell you, was not made by a chef, and the plates and cups contained chips & cracks. On a more positive note - The Rasul room was great and so was our treatment of side by side, couples full body massage. Even though this is an historic building, it is run down and it is not clean. The staff are not friendly and the owner tried to sell us pictures hanging from the wall!!!! - obviously a side line to earn extra money. We complained by e-mail after our visit and the owner promised to either refund part of our money for none use of the spa, or invite us back when it was in working order. Despite further emails to her, she has failed to respond and to keep her promises. Save your hard earned cash, and spend elsewhere. I would not return here ever.

The Portland Spa looked inviting from outside. The staff could have been more attentive and the rooms could have been more sumptious. As a couple with two young children the hour to ourself to pamper was great , however- The rasul could have had an oil included and nicer towels, dressing robes would have been appreciated. I have been to a few spas before and while it was ok I wouldn't rush back or recommend it to others.

Myself and my partner booked the rasul earlier this year, we had an absolutely fantastic time, the setting had a very morrocan feel, it was very relaxing - although it wasn't the best venue for a spa, the treatment we had was perfect. The staff probably need to have more training in customer service and how to treat guests attentively, but I think this is down to management to ensure their staff are giving a good service, as this could make a big impact on clients wanting to return again, the venue is not really the "dream location", so I don't think it would be a reason for customer to return, therefore I feel they need to give exceptional service to make up for the lack in venue. I wouldn't say the staff were rude, they were very pleasant, but were more interested in chatting about their personal life than paying attention to customers. I would return again, but only to use the rasul as we were left to it which suited us for this treatment and we really enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't choose any other treatments as I don't think the staff would give 100% commitment.

I bought a day spa for myself and my mum for her birthday on the lastminute.com deal and booked and paid for lunch there too. When we got there the girl behind the counter didn't know the meaning of customer service. She said that there had been a fire earlier and the spa would not be open that day so i would have to come back another day. Fair enough, accidents like this can happen but the way she treated us, there was no apology and she was quite rude actually. I had travelled 200 miles for my mum's birthday for her special spa treatment and lunch but the girl behind the counter didn't seem bothered at all - she actually couldn't have cared less. When asked for a refund she said that they would have to send the vouchers back to Lastminute.com so i handed my vouchers over, when I asked for a receipt she scrawled her signature on a scrap of blank paper and said it will take a few weeks for it to go into my account. Well it's six month's later and I still haven't received a refund!. I have tried calling 3 or 4 times now, only to be told that the manager will call me back....she never has! Not only did she treat us terribly, the place looked really shabby and nothing like a spa. So after the appalling service I received and the state of the place I would never go there again, actually I wouldn't go there again even if they paid me to go. Jill

When I approached the spa, the staff were stood smoking outside, the table and chairs outside battered and dirty looking. My treatments were ok and the staff member was frendly, but it definately didnt offer value for money and I would not return.
