Incredible value for money - great lunch, bubbly and 60 minute treatment for £50 each! Lovely pool, clean tidy changing rooms - brilliant day out!

This was a treat for my mum and I after a stressful few months, overall we had a lovely day, the only downsides were that the aqua aerobics class started with no warning whilst we were in the sauna and this was very loud, my mums nail varnish was also on too thick and so even after leaving it the 30 minutes getting changed (carefully!) smudged it, that being said we had a brilliant day and would definitely go back! The ice room was magnificent!

I would recommend highly for a relaxing spa day .
The only thing I would say is that a jacuzzi in the pool area would have made it perfect.

Initially couldn't find the booking however gave complimentary drink whilst they looked. Asked if it was a special occasion and informed it was a 60th birthday treat. Staff couldn't have been better. Upgraded the room and a complimentary bottle of wine. In the restaurant another complimentary bottle of wine with a birthday card.
Excellent facilities room was beautiful staff were excellent. Definitely recommend and go back.

I have been visiting Macdonald Portal annually for a spa day for a number of years and always enjoy the experience. There was some confusion as to the spa day package we were on when we arrived but this soon got sorted. The facilities are beginning to show their age and small details like the shower controls, tiles and air conditioning in the pool area need some upgrading. The treatment was excellent and the venue were very accommodating as to the time of the treatment.

My friend and I were looking for a spa day deal and came across one here. We were amazed by the value of what we got for the price. The spa has a lovely professional feel and look to it. The staff were very helpful and answered any questions we had. The facilities were fantastic and we loved all of the various steam rooms and saunas. Both of us had a full body massage which were brilliant and so relaxing. We used the spa lounge and were grateful for the complimentary hot drinks and fresh fruit. The relaxation room was wonderful to just sit and chill in, we particularly liked the duvets available so we could snuggle up on the lounger-style chairs. Lunch was lovely and we were pleasantly suprised with what was included in our 'box deal', the glass of prosecco was a lovely touch too. Overall we were very impressed and had no negative comments about our day. We came away extremely relaxed and would definitely go back again!

A fantastic 'mum to be' massage . The hotel were very flexible when adjusting the spa package to suit my needs.

In general we had a lovely spa day experience and thought it was very good value considering the deal we had purchased. However, we felt that just a few simple improvements could make this spa outstanding rather than good! Firstly they seemed a little short staffed when we first arrived and we were told that we had to wait for towels as they were all in the dryer! Surely there should be enough towels to go round everyone even when some are being washed? It wasn't even that busy. We didn't have to wait long but still not what you expect from a spa day. The main pool area was a perfect temperature (both the water and the air con) and nice and quiet so it was easy to relax. The steam and sauna rooms were fine but the area didn't feel very luxurious. Lunch was outstanding and really excellent value for month - very pleasantly surprised! The treatment areas had a lovely ambience and were very clean and relaxing. The staff were really nice and friendly and the treatments (back massage and facial) were good but overall lacked a bit of professionalism eg she didn't ask me what pressure I wanted for my massage and didn't ask anything about my skin type. The massage was more like a rub and not as good as I was expecting in comparison to others I've had in other places. However, the facial was excellent (apart from not asking me anything about my skin beforehand) and lovely head massage while the mask was on which was great. There was also no feedback afterwards and communication wasn't very clear in terms of what to do next. She told me I had really good skin which isn't true!! She was just being nice but would have preferred honest and professional advice. A good day overall, and would visit again for the right price, but would hope for more thorough and professional treatments next time.

Drab, dated and worn decor in hotel and particularly the room. Food was lacking quality, taste and made without finesse (equal to bad pub grub). Drunk golfers shouting in the corridor at 04:30 didnt add to the ambiance. OK for golfing parties (blokes) but no fun for couples.
Wouldn't recommend nor visit again.

Booked the cream tea spa day as a Christmas gift for my mum, sister and I. Lovely girls who did massages although would have liked more attention to my neck. But ok massage overall. Sister asked the girl who did hers to use a lot of pressure and go deeper but she didn't do... Worst massage she's ever had she said. On speaking to guy on reception about it he told her to leave it with him and he'll see what he can do! On paying for their poor quality pedicures later on the guy on reception didn't mention anything about it or discount the pedi as a gesture of goodwill. Service in restaurant awful! Was only 4 tables in there and we waited nearly an hour for a scone and sandwich. Tea came very quick but was obviously cold by time food came. They messed up the ceaser salad even! Mad rush to eat before pedicures that were booked.
Overall very disappointing day for us all. For a spa hotel it was awful to be honest. Wouldn't recommend to anyone and wouldn't return!

Booked this as a birthday treat. Very disappointed overall. Showers and water were not working which meant we could not have original treatment. Appreciate these things happen but staff had a 'tough luck' attitude. One even said I wish I hadn't picked the Monday shift. Staff were unprofessional and miserable. Rooms were uncomfortably cold. Treatments were not enjoyable. Therapist was very heavy handed and I have actually been suffering with neck pain since the massage which was painful as was the scalp massage during the facial. It was like the therapist was very new and lacked training or just hated doing the treatment and could not be bothered. Music in treatment room was inappropriate and my friend had no music. We were told to go to the restaurant for our ginger cake and lemonade. On doing so we were told we should have gone to the spa lounge but 'I suppose you can sit in here' we were then presented with unpleasant tasting hot chocolate and cheap 'supermarket' gingerbread men. In all honestly everything about this day was a let down, the overall appearance was unkempt I.e empty dispenser for wet kit bags which needed changing, broken sharp tiles hanging from the wall and a foul smell in the toilets this could be due to the fact you could not flush! We felt pretty much like an inconvenience for being there. Very surprised having visited a different macdonald hotel at Christmas and having a fabulous experience. This one certainly lets down the hotel name.
