Totally agree with all the reviews - hard sell and they will promise you the world but lock you into an unfair contract. When I joined, their lift was not working and 2 months on, it still hadn't been fixed. Not good if you are disabled or have trouble climbing stairs. I didn't have an induction either and the staff at the desk are more interested in selling you drinks and merchandise to profit from.

There was an offer to have a free session with a personal trainer who instead dismissed the equipment in the gym (saying they were no good) and made me do squats and lunges for 40 minutes, then was hell bent on getting me to pay him for personal training sessions. I refused, telling him he was too expensive so he agreed to drop his price but again, I wasn't interested.

Parking is a nuisance - as soon as it's 6:30pm, all the spaces near the gym are taken quickly so you have to park in Sainbury's and walk to the gym. Nothing wrong with the walking part but in the dark and deserted car park, I don't feel safe as a woman walking on my own.

Worst gym ever, I wish I hadn't joined. Virgin is far more superior and caring towards its customers. This place is a sh*t hole.

It`s ashame that they do have some diverse classes over there, but I believe most of the staff should be replaced starting with the managers for the things to get going at La Fitness in Edgware. What is written above, all true.

Went on website and saw 3 day free pass. Since I normally can't afford to join gym cause I don't work, I thaught I'd take advantage of the free 3 day offer, and then decide afterwards if I would like to join or not. When I went in, before payment, everything was fine,i was served promptly and everything was ok. Then I was persuaded to join for a year, they said it would work out cheaper if i joined today and that if i joined after then i wouldnt get the discounted rate. Considering i wasnt even planning to join just yet without trying out the facilities, they kinda don't care. they just want the money. I didnt have my bank detauis, so i said i'll join later, after checking out the gymnfirst ,but no, they wouldnt even accept that and saw it as an excuse, they asked if i had my bank card, i said yes, so he CAME WITH ME to the bank to get my bank details, this makes them look DESPERATE to sell membership. They said i get 10 free passes for friends too, but they would get the first visit free anyways, like i did, so really, it's not me getting 10 free passes for friends. The only extra thing i got was a bag and padlock. joining fee was £55 and then it's £25 per month. so basically, I paid £25 for the first month and £25 for a padlock and bag. I was pressurised to join, without having the intention of doing so on the first visit. I didnt even get the opportunity to use my 3 day free pass first!!!! Anyways. they didnt FORCE me to join, cause at the end of the day it is MY decision, but they WERE being very forceful and I didnt like it 1 bit. After joining, i was left. I waited about 5 mins then asked someone to show me around as it was my first time there, WHICH THEY ALREADY KNEW! I felt like they just took the payment and wernt bothered with the rest. Not very happy but i tried out the facilities and they were ok, so i guess ill carry on, but as soon as membership is over, im going somehwere else, unless they read this ,message and offer me some sort of compensation offer. :(

You know what they did is illegal. You can cancel your direct debit. Please see the following links. By the way am a member at Virgin in Mill Hill and even though it's expensive - i love it x
http://www.theguardian.com/money/2012/jan/27/la-fitness-knockout-blow-gym-contracts
the High Court ruled in 2011 that gyms in the UK cannot lock people into annual contracts because it is an unfair and illegal practice. Therefore, you should look out for monthly, quarterly or bi-annually membership schemes.

This gym is "suppose" to be a fully functional gym, 40% of the machines never work, the showers are awful with cold water, the staff are useless, if your membership allows you a towel then ensure you get there early or they'll run out even though you've paid. PT's think they own the machines and expect you to get off as soon as they require them, changing rooms are disgusting and unhygienic, the drains need a good clean, this smell lingers into the showers and swimming pool area. To top things the cleaner is on duty at 6.30pm peak times so you're having to work out on wet slippery floors and dodge her mopping the floor. Also if you leave you trainers underneath the bench whilst having a shower do not expect them to be there when you return, they'll be stolen. Avoid this club like the plague - not worth your money...a total RIP OFF!!!!!!!!

Completely agree with every single point made above. I've been a member since september 2010 and like you said, I don't think anyone sees the logic of the 'refurbishment', which only gave us worse running machines... My thoughts are that they took the old machines to another new LA fitness, and thought fit to give some crappy 'new' ones...

The most crazy thing though, is that I was recently looking for hooks to use the lat machines - there was only one on another machine. So I went to the reception to ask if they had any spares and listen to this: I had to leave my membership card as security behind the desk to get a hook! Apparently people had been stealing them... Now, who steals hooks to take home? As if everyone's got a radian or lateral pull-down at home... Anyway, by analogy, most restaurants lose a lot of cutlery over time, but you're never asked to give your credit card, in case the cutlery goes missing by the time you get the bill! It's just factored into the running costs of a restaurant that equipment will go missing..

I am terribly disappointed with the way this place has been run recently and will probably leave by the time my contract runs out.

For the heavy lifters: The heaviest dumbells are only 32kgs, oh and as of a month now - you will only find one 16kg dumbell, the other having gone 'missing'...

I initially joined LA Fitness Edgware back in 2006. Back then, it was a great gym with great working facilities, uplifting staff, great ambiance with a nice view of Edgware whilst working out and working air condition ! Its a stark contrast now; if you asked me why I am still here its because its no more than a three mins drive for my house.

I normally park my car at Edgware Station, which is a 5 mins walk from the gym and entitles me to a free 1.5hr stay thereafter its like 1.50 for 2 hrs etc. What's really frustrating is that they have masked the main front window which had a great view of the street and let plenty of natural light in, especially in the summer and during the day. I normally do a lot of running and since the recent "restoration of the gym- absolute disaster and waste of money" I feel cluster phobic in this place. Many people have said the same about this and its a great shame considering the gym floor is really tight and small.

The least they should have done is to inform users of changes are expected and get some feedback. This will never happen with LA Fitness Edgware

Oh yes, back in Nov 2010, it was closed for one week for "refurbishment" if you'd asked me this was a total waste of our money and time. For starters the ex treadmills that were there were much more robust and displayed greater information with the facility of an integrated fan into each. The current ones are flimsy and already starting to wear out- a real shame !

It is also unforunate to know that I personally think that this gym would certainly fail an external Health and Safety test. Air condition does not work most times for starters ! My friend asked a member of staff this and was told to either "stop complaining" or "quit this gym". I frankly think this is disgraceful.

There's about 30 people in the weights area all working out in cramped conditions often without air conditioning and poor air quality. Most of the weights are missing and half the time I go to the weights room I end up scavenging for the weights or waiting for someone to be finished with them (peak hours). Only 4 benches and one of which is broken and cant easily decline.

If you ever find a machine broken which you will do inevitably at this gym then don't expect for it to be fixed in the coming months. Also, to add the number of machines are minimal, no more than 12 runners 2 steppers and 12 "ski machines"- not sure right name. There's only 6 weights machines all in all.

The changing rooms are adequate; however recently whilst I was there someone had the locker broken into and had their valuables stolen. For these reasons I always take my mobile and car keys with me when I'm at the gym.

New news for May 2011 onwards the gym will be closing at 7pm Sat/ Sun....a bit of shame as I tend to work late weekends and use the gym in the evenings. I might have to travel to Finchley for weekends in the future.

Although I am paying £36/month and yes I shouldnt be ranting; you ll probably be paying at least £52/ month. So from that point of view I have to be honest and DO NOT join this gym if possible. Avoid it and use Virgin Active for £60/month- totally worth it. Like I said my main reason is because I live really close by.

Watch out from sales people as they will rip you off - I wouldn't trust them at all !

Here's my review of La Fitness Edgware. I'd like to point out that, in my opinion, they did a really stupid thing in their 'redecoration'. Firstly, no-one could go for a week. Secondly, almost nothing changed. EXCEPT they covered up the windows. Previously you could exercise and look out the window onto the street below. No-one on the street could see in. Now, it is a lot more claustrophobic. I actually joined this gym rather than Fitness First or Golds in Harrow because they didn't have windows! Anyway, that's a personal gripe. Here's the review:

Getting there:
I don't drive so I can't comment on parking but I've heard finding a parking space is tricky.
Right opposite the bus station and underground train station.

Staff:
Most are friendly, some are indifferent. There is no-one I would say I disliked. A quck hello when I walk in and a good-bye when I leave is pretty much the only contact I have with them.

Equipment:
Standard stuff, it's quite small really. I've been to Fitness First in Harrow which is much bigger. If you go at peak times you will have to expect a wait to get on the machines (treadmills, etc. and weights).

Classes:
I don't go to any. During the day you will often hear announcements that classes are starting and places are available. I don't know if they get more packed in the evening.

Changing rooms:
Only seen the mens obviously. They are clean and the lockers are a reasonable size. You must bring a padlock they don't have the 'returnable pound coin' system. They will sell you a combination padlock for a fiver if you don't have one but you can bring your own. There is one cubicle for shy men or for men with children.

Toilets:
Without being crude, I'd only use the urinals. There are two cubicles and one always appears to be blocked. Very often someone hasn't flushed.

Showers:
Not good. Firstly they smell. It's a kind of mushroomy, fungal smell that isn't at all pleasant as you can imagine. It's not overpowering but hangs unpleasanty in the background. The temperature ranges from freezing to just about warm. I have yet to be a hot one. There are about 10 showers (with screens, not all in a row in the open) and if more than 3 are in use the water pressure seems to drop along with the temperature.

Price:
Around £45 a month

Signing up:
They certainly go for the hard sell. As soon as you walk upstairs to see what the place is like they have you filling out forms and act as if you are signing up there and then. It really is the hard sell. It goes something like this:

You: I'm thinking of joining the gym, can I take a look around.

Them: Please take a seat here and fill out this form.

You: Well, I don't know if I want to join yet, what is the monthly fee?

Them: Fill out the form and I get someone to give you a tour.

You: OK.

[A member of staff takes you on a quick tour of the gym and back to the saleswoman.]

Them: OK, I've processed your form. You will be issued with a membership card now, and I can also give you this welcome pack that contains... [she then goes through everything in the pack]

You: Well, I don't know if I want to join yet?

Them: Do you have any questions?

You: How much do I have to pay a month?

Them: [she then tells you, and ends with...] if you pay the first installment now with cash or credit card you can start using the gym straight away.

[she then sits and stares at you until you either get up and walk out or pay the first installment and get your membership card].

I suppose this is how they think they'll get the most members and it probably is.

All-in-all if you want a gym that you can turn up to and do your thing then leave. If you want it to be in Edgware because that's the most convenient. And you'll do most your exercising during the day. Then La Fitness is OK. That is, it'll do the job.

I have been a memeber of LA Fitness Edgware branch for 1 year now and I am on a 2 year contract ( wish I never signed up with them to be honest)
I had many unpleasant experiences while visiting this gym, like cold showers, sauna or steam room out of order for a long while ( it takes them absolut ages to fix anything), faulty shower heads, hairdriers, equipment in general which does not get fixed in reasonable time.
What I am most disgusted of is the fact that the changing rooms are very dirty, shower curtains look like they never been changed since this place opened ( there are staines on them and are covered in mold and limescale). Also toilets seem to be out of order very often and they are not fixed rapidly ( considering the number of memebers they have they should put more effort into sorting things like these out).

Also this branch is completely overcrowded, it is a nightmare to try and work out here at peak times ( ie btw 6pm-9pm week days), I am always in the situation of having to wait around to use a machine, they do not have enough free weights, medicine balls or pillates balls to match requirements and what's worse they do not do anything about it.

They should definatelly buy more of the above equipment but they dont even seem to think about it, all they care about is signing more people up, although they dont have the space/facilities !!!

I hate this place as it is very poorly managed, I wish I never signed up and I honestly do not recommended....I am off to a better gym as soon as my contract expires.....bye bye LA Fitness Edgware....you're so not worth it !!!!

I visited this gym to enquire about prices, classes etc and the staff were so rude I ended up leaving and vowing never to return.
They refused to tell me anything unless I gave them my full name and address as well as phone number which I didn't want to do as I had no desire to be bombarded with junk and calls.
They then refused to even tell me what times they were open, what classes they did- all due to health and safety apparently. Seriously? Getting my phone number cures a strange H&S issues about telling me what time you're open?
I had already waited 30 minutes+ in a filthy reception area seeing many other disgruntled members and figured perhaps I already knew all I needed to know and left

I never usually wright reviews but felt this needed to be said. Unfriendly staff, no proper changing facilitys and broken treadmills are just a few of the bad points.
After spending a fortune to join, you then have to go and spend more money on buying a padlock so you can use a locker, unless you fancy lugging your coat etc around the gym with you. This seems to me way behind other gyms where you put maybe a returnable £1 in the locker or use your card to lock it (iv been to cheaper gyms that have this simple locker facility). Also its can be a pain having to remember to bring your padlock with you everywhere incase you fancy going to the gym!
Also, for anyone that plans on driving to the gym, think again unless you want to pay a small fortune for pay and display (thats if you manage to even find a space) or if you want a time restriction on your workout you can park in the broadwalk shopping centre carpark for free for the first hour and a half.
Don't bother going at peak times either (basically anytime after 5pm) as you'll be in for a long wait to get onto one of the machines. There is a very small selection of machines and even though it is posted that at peak times time is limited to 20 mins people do not stick to the rules and I have been stood around waiting for equipment many times. This isn't helped when for example out of approx 10 treadmills that they do have 4 of them aren't even working!
They have fitness classes (pilates, aerobics etc) for free when you're a member however I was told you have to book at least 7 days in advance to attend the class, so you can't just decide you fancy doing it that day. However when i tried signing up for one of the classes (7 days before it) i was told i had to wait until closer to the time, I waited a day, came book to book myself in and it was already full and was told i should have put my name down sooner!!
All in all you can find cheaper gyms that provide a better facility and id even pay that little bit more for a gym that isn't this bad. I am very glad that i didnt sign up for the fulll 12 months!

Wow, thank you so much for this review: I go to LA fitness in Northwood (where my experience is much, much better should you be interested) and I was thinking about switching to Edgware because it's closer to me. I'll definitely stick to Northwood now!

I agree with you that at oeak times there is little point in going. I only go in the morning now but when I first joined I went in the evening and had to wait around in the evening.

The padlock thing doesn't bother me but the other systems would be preferable.

I don't drive to the gym but parking in Edgware isn't easy.

The showers aren't great and I don't use the pool or sauna.

However, the staff seem alright and I can get in, exercise, shower and leave without any problems.

I have to agree with the review. It is so frustrating especially when the steam room and sauna always seemed to be out of order. I used to go to Edgware but got fed up with waiting around touse the machine and the non functioning steam room. Another annoying thing is that the weights room is so small that you more often than not have to wait around for those too. I now go to Finchley which is 10 times better.
