I have been for a member at David Lloyd Hampton for over a year and I have NEVER been impressed with the staff. There is never anyone available to answer any queries and all they care about is money and getting they overproced membership even if the servics/facilities arent up to scratch.

Recently they have started a shower refurbishment in the mens changing rooms that have taken over a month and in the meantime thet have FIVE bacteria ridden temporary tiny portacabin showers. These stink, are boilng hot water only, are blocked so you stand in a few inches of everyones waste shower water. Somewhere there is a leak and the floors, mats and everything nearby is soaked. Not ideal after an intese work out. The temperature varies randomly from hot to scalding as does the pressure.

Staff aware of issues but absolutely no suggestion of a discount or guest pass etc for horrifc showers and inconvenience. Staff are rude and never seem phased by any issues, they would still expect extortion rates if the swimming pool was empty, free weights were stolen and the running machines had no power.

Fur coat and no knickers about sums it up.

They are hopeless altogether at ever getting back to anyone. Managers, staff, sales people. The reception staff seem to be the only responsive staff. Any time I have ever requested a call back, I have had to chase them repeatedly, despite having been a loyal member for two years +.

I have now left but their computer system hasn't been updated so they keep chasing me for payment, and issuing emails and calls saying I need to contact them about payment.

I completed a survey one time from HQ and was told that someone would get back to me to address my input. Did anyone ever contact me? You guessed it. Nuffink. Not a sausage of communication.

When I was joining, sales staff insisted to me that they would only let me read the contract if I was going to sign it. They refused to let me take a copy away(!). Isn't this illegal? It certainly seemed dubious.

Also, despite raising concerns about data security, I was shown other people's details on their computer system, relating to their dob, address, how many sit ups Richard should do and how he was getting on with this. Poor Richard had lost his keyfob and the gym induction staff were using real people's lost fobs to demonstrate how useful the keyfob system can be!

The only thing I like about this gym is that it is open late (the gym part closes at half ten) and you feel safe leaving. They are very expensive (£100 a month).

At the weekend, it is choc full of families and under fives. DL claim there is an active social life but this is centred around families. Families' halloween parties, families' new years parties. Yawn. I don't feel comfortable as a childless adult navigating around all the little people all day Saturday and Sunday, who are hovering around doors waiting to get their fingers stuck in them, and being shouted at by their mothers. I feel that the DL social activities actually leave people like me (young professionals) out in the cold. There is never everything for us.

Interestingly the day before my holidays, one of the staff came and had a good fixated look on my big wobbly belly (never my strong point). Staring fascinatedly, he commented that I clearly needed a rehaul of my workout as it didn't seem to be working for me.

BTW there is a three month notice period, if you ever decide to leave, and this is rounded up to the end of the 3 month period (ie it extends to the end of the calendar month).

I have just been to David Lloyd, Hamtpton to enquire about membership options and prices. I was told I'd have to see a sales consultant first, so I agreed, and was then told no-one was available to see me, Instead, they would have to take a phone number to arrange an appointment.

I repeated that I only needed to know prices and that if acceptable, I would sign up then and there. (I am doing a 10K run in October and need somewhere to train).

However, after consultatiion with the Manager (!!) I was told that they could not help unless I was prepared to come back and see a sales consultant.

I think they should re-name the Manager 'Head of sales prevention'.

Needless to say, I will now join one of the several other gyms in the area!

At first glance Amida Hampton is a health club with a wealth of facilities including Spa, 9 hole Golf course and Tennis courts. The staff are keen as most sales staff are to sign you up to a years contract offering free vouchers for additional facilities and events. The club has recently been bought by The David Lloyd Group and has lost its independence and attention to detail. Amida has seen a number of changes with the introduction of children inline with David Lloyds other clubs.
Gone are the days when the club picked up awards for its facilities and from our experiences the club has problems with basic maintenance of the gym equipment. Cleanliness and hygiene have become the real issue in recent months and the Spa, wet area and changing facilities are now a place to avoid. Membership at Amida Hampton is not cheap and frankly there are better clubs in the area.
