Swimming Pools

Swimming Pools

Swimming pools, also known as swimming baths, provide everyone with the option to keep fit and stay healthy through swimming, diving and related activities. Often part of fitness or leisure centres, public pools are ideal for families looking for a fun day out - as well as for those who take their swimming more seriously. Most people tend to swim lengths of the pool in varying strokes, but there is usually the opportunity to take advantage of classes such as water aerobics, synchronised swimming or even water polo if you’re feeling adventurous.

Swimming is a fantastic way to keep fit, lose weight and tone your body without placing your joints under any strain. Practising a range of different strokes such as butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl targets different areas of the body, helping to give an all over workout. Swimming can also have a positive effect on your mental wellbeing, reducing stress and lowering blood pressure.

One of the great things about swimming pools is that you can find all sorts of people exercising there. Working out in the water is a fairly gentle way to stay fit, making swimming sessions ideal for the elderly, pregnant women and those in rehabilitation after an illness. But don’t worry if your stamina is high and you are looking to push yourself – lanes are allotted according to ability, so that everyone can exercise unimpeded. Hoorah!

Visiting a swimming pool can be a great way to stay fit on a budget, as pools often require a much lower fee than gyms or other fitness centres. Entrance to the pool will usually grant you access to facilities such as hot showers and lockers – and if you’re lucky, you may get to use a sauna, steam room or Jacuzzi, too.
