This morning as we plugged in our straighteners, applied our ‘magic’ colour match foundation and opened our Wahanda app to quickly book in for a lunchtime mani, we thought to ourselves “the modern beauty world is a pretty amazing place”. Thanks to a number of technological advancements, looking our best is easier than ever (we’d have traded our own mother for a Clarisonic when we were teenagers), especially if you have a smart phone.
The new wave of beauty apps offer beauty assistance on everything from finding the perfect lip shade to compliment your new handbag, to discovering and booking into nearby beauty venues (great idea, huh?). Here are a few that will change your life…
If you’ve ever Googled ‘How to create a smoky eye’ or ‘how to contour like a Kardashian’ then there’s a good chance you’ll have come across the PixiWoo sisters already. Known for their vast collection of how to videos on YouTube, their app is unlike any other. It’s actually an interactive magazine all about beauty, featuring looks, videos, interviews and professional tips from the many talented bloggers, makeup artists and hair experts they have met throughout their careers. Download each issue for free and, next time you’re stuck waiting for a bus, pass the time with some great beauty content.
We’ve all learned about the highly processed foods we should avoid putting into our bodies, but many of us still don't think about the potential toxins we put on our bodies. Think Dirty lets you know about any potentially toxic ingredients in your makeup and cosmetics, and compare them with others products. All you need to do is open the app and scan the barcode on a particular item (it’s really fun) or, if it’s worn away, search for it by name. If the product is in the database (they’re not all at the moment but it’s a work in progress) then a screen will appear with a rating out of ten (the higher the number the more toxic the product) and a break down of the item's carcinogenicity, development and reproductive toxicity, and allergies and immunotoxicities – it’s simpler than it sounds.
Almost as fun as Think Dirty’s scanner tool, the Colour Genius app by L’Oreal Paris asks you take pictures of your outfit (or a striking part of it), pick one of the tones it identifies, and select whether you're planninf your outfit for day or night. The clever little app will then generate three different makeup options to complete your look, depending on whether you want to match, blend or clash. Understandably, the only results are L’Oreal products (nail varnish, lip stick and eye shadows), but we don’t have a problem with that. The app feels like a big step into the future of makeup, while also making us feel a bit like a character in Clueless, using Cher’s outfit planner. In other words it’s the beauty tool we’ve always dreamed of.
Not that we’re biased or anything, but our favourite beauty app of all time is, of course, the Wahanda app, which gives you easy, on-the-go access to the thousands of salons and spas bookable right here on Wahanda. Simply select a treatment type from options including hair, nails and massage, and the app will show you the best options near you (including discounted last-minute and off-peak appointments). You can then read reviews to find out what fellow users thought of the venue, and book and pay for appointments in just a few taps. Not bad, even if we do say so ourselves. Download it now.
