Tried and tested: Lash Perfect at The Athenaeum Spa

Tried and tested: Lash Perfect at The Athenaeum Spa

Like most women, I’ve always wanted longer lashes, but until recently I thought the only way to get them was with fiddly falsies that – in my experience – are often more hassle than they’re worth. I wanted a dramatic effect that looked more natural than stick-on lashes, and that I wouldn’t have to spend hours trying to apply myself. I decided to try lash extensions for the first time, and went to pay the experts at The Athenaeum Spa a visit.

The venueI arrived at the beautiful Athenaeum Hotel (which is in the most amazing location, a minute’s walk from Hyde Park Corner and overlooking Green Park), and was quickly directed to the spa downstairs. Despite the grandeur of the hotel, the spa is actually a lot cosier than I expected, with an unfussy décor that is minimalist without being at...

Tried and tested: cut, colour and Keratin treatment at Joe’s Salon

I have naturally blonde hair that, fortunately, turns lighter every summer without me reaching for the bleach. However, with last year’s summer a distant memory, my hair colour has started looking dull and mousy (complementing my pasty complexion) due to limited sunlight. I’d been considering getting highlights for a while but really didn’t want to commit to anything that needed a lot of upkeep so was nervous of getting anything too drastic and ending up with blonde stripes. When I was offered a cut and colour by the legendary Diego at Joe’s Salon Hair London I knew that wouldn’t be the case.

The VenueBased in trendy Chelsea, Joe’s salon is sleek, light and modern. Owner, Joe Mehmet, and his creative director Diego Miranda have earned reputations as top hairdressers to the stars and...

Tried and tested: reflexology at Central London Reflexology

After a few demanding weeks at work, indulging in a bit of reflexology at The Central London Reflexology Centre on Harley Street was just what I needed to de-stress and relieve the tension within my body. Reflexology is a type of massage that uses specific trigger points on the feet to stimulate and heal other parts of the body. Five years since my last reflexology session, a bit of healing was long overdue…

The spaSituated in one of the most beauty-centric areas of London, Central London Reflexology is located within A.L.O. Clinic, on the Southern part of Harley Street. Just behind Oxford Street the clinic is easily accessible by public transport and even had options for parking.

On arrival the receptionist gave me a quick health form to complete while waiting for my appointment to...

Tried and tested: Accent Radio Frequency at Adore Me MedSpa

Radio frequency has been practised for years as a skin tightening treatment to treat a multitude of conditions including cellulite and fat reduction. After hearing about the success a friend of mine experienced after undergoing radio frequency I wanted to give it a try so headed to Adore Me MedSpa in Kensington to see what it could do for me…

The venueA short walk from High Street Kensington tube station, Adore Me MedSpa is very easy to find. The salon is modern and very stylish while still being comfortable, and the staff were very welcoming, offering me a glass of water while I waited for my treatment.

I wasn’t waiting for long, within minutes of my arrival my therapist came out to welcome me and lead me to the treatment room for a consultation. The room was fairly basic but very...

Tried and tested: skin peel at Eleven Hair, Barbican

Facial peels are never going to be the most glamorous of treatments, but the glowing, even skin they promise apparently makes them an A-list staple. In an effort to recover some radiance, I accepted the offer to give one a go at East London's Eleven Hair.

The venueEleven is a tiny little hair salon tucked away on a busy road that houses some cool streetfood stands (think Portobello, but much smaller). It's about a 10 minute walk from Barbican tube station.

I was taken downstairs and given a coffee while I waited for Villie, the therapist who would be doing my skin peel treatment. She was very sweet and talked me through the procedure, which apparently was going to lift and brighten my skin. She recommended a course of six treatments with one appointment every two weeks and told me that...

Tried and tested: cut and blow dry with conditioning at Chez Stephan

There’s no beating that ‘just stepped out of the salon’ feeling, however I must confess that when it comes to hair maintenance I’m pretty lazy. The last time I got a haircut was back in January and six months later I was on my way to becoming John Rocha’s doppelganger (a strong look I’m sure you’ll agree). Something had to be done. When I was offered the opportunity to take a trip to the charming Chez Stephan’s in Putney I jumped at the chance. A salon that fuses its passion for hairdressing with a love of art and wine, sounds interesting, right?

The VenueA short walk from Putney Station and just off the bustling High Street, Chez Stephan sits on Lacy Road (a cute street with a few pubs and independent restaurants and cafes). I initially strolled past the venue as I failed to spot the...

Tried and tested: hypnotherapy at Quitmasters UK

Hypnotism is something that has fascinated me ever since a hypnosis night at university when I watched someone get mesmerized into thinking they were an elephant. Being something of a control freak, I’ve viewed friends who have achieved things like quitting smoking, overcoming a fear of flying and sleeping better with a mix of envy and admiration. I’d heard hypnotism could help me do the same, but the fear of being hypnotised to kill Stephen Fry or run around like a chicken always kept me from trying it (thanks for that Derren Brown). Hypnotism is, however, gaining popularity all the time so when Diana at Quitmasters UK offered to help me address some emotional, stress-related eating issues with hypnotherapy I knew I had to forget my irrational fear and give it a shot.

The venueIt was...

Tried and tested: full body massage at Splash Soho

Feeling worn out and in need of a massage? Sometimes we all need to take time out and relax, and what better way to wind down before the weekend than with a full body massage. With a sore back, tired legs and overused arm muscles, a massage to soothe aches and pains was just what the doctor ordered. Cue Splash Soho coming to the rescue with their one hour full body massage. 60 minutes later and things were feeling OK again...

The venue

Situated a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of London’s busy Oxford Street, Splash’s Soho is located in a fabulous part of town and is very easy to find. Tried and tested: Anti-wrinkle injections at Vagheggi's Harley Street

Back in my early twenties I was sure I'd never even think of having cosmetic injectables, and that anyone who had these sorts of treatments was lacking the self-confidence to grow old gracefully. I was convinced that I would embrace the ageing process with open arms. In short, I was a bit of idiot in my 20s.

It's an easy assumption to make when nights of little sleep and loads of booze barely dent your dewy, youthful complexion. When you don't wake up in the morning with pillow lines down your face and looking ‘natural’ doesn't take an hour, industrial eye-bag concealer and a cement mixer. As soon as my early thirties hit and the first lines started to show (furrows on my forehead and ‘number 11s’ between the eyes that made me look permanently angry) I realised how dismissive I had...

Tried and tested: deep tissue massage at The Seven Heavens Clinic

After all the excitement and stress of Christmas, party season and ringing in the New Year, we could all benefit from a little R&R. Something like a deep and invigorating massage to get rid of built-up tension, soothe the body and restore us to our former glory ready to embrace 2013.
