Tried and Tested: smart skincare from Intelligent Nutrients

Wahanda lovers are always asking us how best to preserve complexion perfection as they age. As advocates for natural beauty, we believe the best products are, well, natural. That's why we were so excited to learn about Intelligent Nutrients' nurturing, 100% organic products.

Intrepid aesthetic explorers that we are, we tried and tested their ravishing range so see whether nature's nicest nutrients can compare with their chemically conjured counterparts. We were pleasantly surprised....

The brand

Intelligent Nutrients believe in only putting products on your body that you'd be happy to have in your body. So much so that if you really wanted to (if you really, really wanted to....and we don't recommend it...) technically you could eat them. The key pampering powerhouse ingredient is...

Money-saving beauty tips – look pretty for pennies this summer

As the great Dolly Parton once said, ‘It costs a lot to look this cheap’. Now we at Wahanda are not suggesting that you follow in Dolly’s hillbilly footsteps (it’s a look only she could pull off) but looking good can put a serious dent in our finances. Luckily for our ravishing readers, we’ve scoured the land – and Twitter - to bring you some fabulous feel-good tips and tricks to get you looking lovely for less.

Smooth operatorNext time you’re in the shower, reach for the conditioner… for your legs. The lovely folk at @SoothingShowers say that when used instead of shaving gel, clever conditioner will soften that stubble and give you the smoothest of shaves.

While we’re on the subject, if you’re waiting until pay day to visit a salon to treat your tresses, try a DIY approach for a quick...

Tried and tested: Shaolin Kung Fu

If your fitness resolutions need a kick in the butt to keep them going, Shaolin Kung Fu could be for you. Far from the Karate Kid stereotype, martial arts are for all ages and fitness levels. First practised in China, this ancient martial art isn’t just for self defence - its combination of strength and endurance training teach mental and physical control as well as building muscle and core strength. We set off to the Nam Pai Chuan school in Chiswick to see if we too could become more zen, less Kung Fu Panda.

The venue

Classes take place in Chiswick Community School, easily accessed by public transport. On the day of our visit kids and adults of all ages were filing in and out of a variety of classes, but the separate halls and friendly tutors made it easy to find the right place. The...

Fit and fabulous for February: week two

It’s been a week since I started my ‘Fit and Fabulous for February’ challenge and I can honestly say that the Olympics are losing nothing for my absence. I do not appear to have endorphins. Or if I do then they don’t ‘rush’, they just mooch along, occasionally tipping their hat at me around the four mile mark on my cycle commute. Luckily for this challenge however, I refuse to be beaten by what I can only assume is an innate incompatibility with sweat.

Gillian Michaels' 'Ripped in 30' DVD is pretty fabulous exercise in itself. After just seven days I could feel the routine getting easier. Not much easier, but I no longer found myself screeching ‘Gillian you are a madwoman. You revel in my pain’ at the TV. Which is good because my cat was starting to look worried. Sadly this morning I...

On yer bike: a ‘fit and fabulous for February’ challenge

As the festive season fades into memory, health and wellness resolutions have been kicking in at Wahanda HQ. When it’s cold and grey outside it can be tempting to snuggle up under the duvet and put off that new regime until tomorrow, but there’s no time like the present. After all, before you know it Valentine's Day will be here and it’ll be time to slip into something slinky all over again…

In the spirit of self-improvement (and perhaps because I’m a glutton for punishment), over the next 30 days I’ll be embarking on a shiny new program to become a healthier, happier, more toned me. As if that wasn’t lunacy enough, I will also be posting on Wahanda about it, so you can join me as I do battle with the bulge.

The Challenge

Never one for starving, I warn you now this is not going to be a...

Tried and tested: HD Brows

When they are good they are very, very good, but when they’re bad they’re horrid. Face framing arches can take years off, sculpt cheekbones and open up pretty peepers. Bad brows however can ruin an otherwise flawless face. From the over-plucked eighties look to the super-bushy cavewoman effect we are faced with a myriad of facial foul-ups, so it’s often better to seek professional advice.

From plucking and threading to tinting and waxing, making a depilatory decision is tough. But fear not- the hottest new HD Brows Treatment combines all of the above with highly trained therapists and exclusive techniques. Could this be the route to the eyebrows of your follicular fantasies? I set off to Anesis in Clapham to find out...

New season, new look - the best in beauty for Autumn

The evenings are drawing in, the weather is cooling down and Fall fashion is flooding the high street. Autumn is definitely here, and there’s some serious new season shopping to be done. But before you dash out in search of perfect parkas and brilliant boots, check out the new season’s beauty trends. Just in time for London Fashion Week.....

Kiss and makeup

Cosmetics just got complicated. After summer’s low maintenance ‘tan, gloss and go’ attitude Autumn’s looks may seem demanding, but once you have the hang of it you’ll love these sensationally structured effects. Pillar-box red lips and metallic eyes will be huge in A/W 2011, closely followed by attention grabbing graphic eyeliner. Couture colours are also big news, with designers showcasing beautifully blended brights on eyes,...

Put fertility worries to bed with Galen Health

Time stands still for no man - or woman. Many of us wonder just how late in the day it is according to our biological clocks. Whilst we often do all that we can to avoid being fabulously fertile in our teens and twenties, good health doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re making ‘eggcellent’ ovum or sensational spermatozoa. A million myths abound about the best ways to maximise brief-less encounters but fertilisation is a finicky business.

Age is the biggest factor in kiddy creation and from 27 our baby-making brilliance begins to decline. After the positively youthful age of 37 it dips sharply again, meaning that conception can feel like trying to win an egg and spoon race using chopsticks.

Luckily these days getting a bun in the oven doesn’t need to be a guessing game. With expert...

Sending out a summer S.O.S – save our sheets

We at Wahanda know that your skin is important to you. Everyone wants a golden glow but why risk wrinkles or chance cancer when we can fake it ‘till we make it with sensational sunless tanning products?

Bronzed beauty is always in fashion, making us appear healthier and even slimmer, but application can messy. In a recent survey 81% of fake tan users rated tell-tale tanning scent on their bedsheets as the number one downside of going safe and sunless. A further 71% of the dark skinned divas surveyed listed sheet stains as their number two tanning trouble.

But milky-skinned mopers need fret no more. A flash of tantastic inspiration has turned our fake tanning nightmares into sweet dreams with a blissful bedtime beauty buy. Fake Tan Bag is a simple solution to all of our tanning woes....

We don’t need to tell our fabulous Wahanda followers that all things vintage are ‘in’. From swinging sixties to the fantastic fourties, styles from the past are having a huge fashion moment. Amazing events and treatments are popping up all over the country so it’s never been easier to get the look. We shimmied down to Balham Bowls Club to the first date of ‘The Vintage Event’ to see what beauty bargains and pin-up props we could find to help us join the retro-volution.

Stepping inside the bunting-clad bowls club, we could instantly tell that The Vintage Event’s team weren’t fibbing with their promises of ‘objects of desire from the 1940s to the 1980s’. Three rooms of delightfully decorated stalls and rails were jam-packed with brilliant bargains. From silky seventies slips to faux furs...

Tried and Tested: Get Gorgeously Golden With BeauBronz

The summer is definitely here but it seems that no one told the weather. This leaves tan lovers with only one option- faking it. But which method to choose? For a better relationship, sleep on it!

We’re all perkier after a proper night’s sleep. Catching plenty of zzz’s lifts your mood, increases energy levels and helps busy bodies to regenerate and refresh themselves.

And now a new study carried out by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine implies that how women sleep can have a direct effect on their marriage. 'Wives who took longer to fall asleep the night before reported poorer marital functioning the next day, and so did their husbands', states Dr Wendy Troxel.

Dr Troxel’s study group contained 35 couples in their thirties, with no history of physical or mental health problems, thus eliminating depressive symptoms as a cause of marital tension. The couples’ movements over the course of the night were noted in order to ascertain who slumbered soundly and who tossed...

Climb Jacob's Ladder for angelic abs

Fancy toning multiple muscles at once, strengthening your core and having fun at the same time? And all this without placing any strain on your joints?

Already picking up celebrity fans including the buff-bodied Jessica Biel, new fitness craze 'Jacob's Ladder' combines upper and lower body training at a pace dictated by you. Because it works out legs and arms together, you can burn twice the calories of standard cardio training. Or work out for half the time if you're not feeling so saintly...

Training is based around the 'ladder' itself, a machine set at a 45 degree angle, which you 'climb' using large built-in rungs. Once you being ‘climbing’ these rungs move downwards in a treadmill like motion. Don't worry technophobes- there are no automated functions or complicated buttons. The...

At Wahanda we know that our members tend to be an adventurous lot. You guys love trying new treatments, the more wonderfully wacky the better.

The huge success of our so-called ‘pirhana pedicures’ (when hundreds of you had a ‘whale’ of a time soaking your feet in tanks of skin-sucking fishy friends) got us thinking. Hope for homeopathy- new evidence suggests large scale effectiveness in Cuba

We’ve all heard about the recent debate over the provision of homeopathic remedies on the NHS, and it’s been a hot topic in the press for some time. Yet a new study has emerged that suggests, contrary to popular belief, homeopathy is effective as a treatment for illness.

Classified as an ‘alternative’ treatment, homeopathic remedies involve small amounts of ‘irritant’ preparations massively diluted and taken in the form of a sugar ‘pill’. The theory is that these substances, which would usually aggravate the immune system and cause adverse symptoms in a healthy person, cause the body to build up a ’tolerance’ and thereby combat symptoms in an ill patient.

One example of this would be the treatment of insomniacs with a preparation containing a coffee derivative (coffee being known to...

Indulge in wellness tourism and come back feeling better

Everyone knows the usual equation for a holiday abroad- take three weeks of surviving on grapes to get that ‘bikini body’, add a dehydrating flight, a fortnight of rich meals, lazy days and boozy nights and what do you get? A ‘break’ that leaves you looking and feeling worse than you did before you left. You could be forgiven for thinking you’d be better off spending the money on a swanky gym membership or a spa break.

Well fret no more, Brits abroad because binging and bloating is out and ‘wellness tourism’ is in. More and more relaxation-seekers are searching further afield for the best in spa breaks, treatments and even cosmetic surgery. So pack your bags and hop on a plane for a holiday experience that’ll leave you glowing and perhaps even transformed.

We’ve all been faking it for fifty years

We at Wahanda are not the sort to miss a party, so we got very excited when we found out that fake tanning is now fifty years old. Apparently we’ve all been bathing in the brown stuff since 1960.

Women have longed to be bronzed beauties for years. In 1903 Dr Auguste Rollier opened the world's first dedicated sun clinic, at Leysin, high in the Swiss Alps. He was convinced that the pure air and bright sunlight could cure diseases, thus beginning the myth than tanned skin was ‘healthy’. Legend has it that Coco Chanel later accidentally sunburned on a yacht in the 30’s (naughty naughty!) and started an overnight craze for darker ‘outdoorsy’ complexions.

Those were the days before we were aware of the dangers of UV rays however and by the 60s people began looking for a way to get sunny...

Tried and tested: sail away to relaxation with ‘floating’

Feeling uptight? Need some relaxing ‘me’ time? Perhaps sleeping with the fishes is your answer to watery wellness.

We all love the summer but sometimes hours of pounding away at the PC in a sweltering office can leave us feeling flustered. When Wahanda heard about ‘Floatworks’, the biggest centre dedicated to ‘floating’ in the world, we had go down and check out this piscine pastime.

Venue

Floatworks itself is situated a quick five minute jaunt from London Bridge station. Boob job blunder- Poly implant prosthesis (PIP) cause fears over ruptures

Been thinking about increasing your assets? Perhaps you want to become a more ‘well rounded’ individual?

These days cosmetic surgery is so frequent and highly regulated that we seem to forget it’s a serious medical procedure. Breast implants in particular have become very much the norm, with thousands of women flocking to ‘boost’ their curves each year. Because of the sheer number of breast augmentations it’s always shocking when a substandard product is discovered on the market.

The latest controversy in this delicate area involves ‘Poly Implant Prosthesis’ or ‘PIP’ implants. The British Association of Accredited Plastic Surgeons’ board or BAAPS has issued new guidelines recommending any woman with PIP implants to attend a scan as soon as possible. Having already been used in many...

Elastoplast’s Invisible Protection- the clear choice for summer scrapes

Accidents will happen and we’ve all woken up on a sunny day and realised with horror that we’re far from skirt-ready. Speedy shaving can cause painful nicks, leading to a choice between slow-healing cuts and ugly, old fashioned plasters. Step forward Elastoplast’s new innovation, the ‘Invisible Protection’ plaster.

‘Transparent’ plasters have been around for a while, but previous models always looked somewhat like a Blue Peter DIY (involving lots of sticky backed plastic). Invisible Protection plasters are different. For a start the sticky ‘body’ of the plaster is 100% transparent and slightly mattified, giving a more natural look on the skin. The ‘wound pad’ - the gauze section you place over the cut to protect it- is also completely clear and looks invisible upon application. The whole...

Look eternally gorgeous like the stars of Twilight ‘Eclipse’

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last two years, you’ll probably have heard of the Twilight Saga. Centered around the love affair between Bella, a human and Edward, a supernaturally gorgeous vampire, the film stars Kristen Stewart and a brooding Robert Pattinson as the starcrossed lovers. Vampire boyfriends may not be that practical- he’s more likely to treat you in an abattoir than The Ivy and sun-bathing’s a no-no- but at least we can take some beauty inspiration from them to keep us looking immortal, even if we don’t feel it after queuing for premiere tickets all night!

Dimple surgery- how far would you go for Cheryl’s cheeky grin?

Voted FHM’s sexiest woman, superstar singer, judge and recovered WAG, Cheryl Cole (or Tweedy as she is now known, again!) is one heck of a role model. Women of all ages flock to read about her beauty tips and emulate her style. Cheryl’s trademark chocolate coloured hair and golden tan are easily copied, but her trademark grin has always been a bit more difficult... until now. And no, we don’t just mean her dazzling teeth.

Controversial surgery means that now anybody can have Cheryl-esque dimples if they’re willing to fork out for the pleasure. The surgery involves a small incision being made at the site of the dimple. The edges of this incision are then ‘stitched’ to a lower layer of skin and allowed to heal. As the stitches dissolve, scar tissue keeps the ‘dimples’ in place. This means...

Is there a doctor (fish) in the house? Tried and tested- the fish pedicure

It’s offishially (!) sandal season and we at Wahanda would much rather be out enjoying the sunshine than stuck in the bathroom with a pumice. Standard treatments can get dull so we’ve always got our ear to the ground for new and exciting ones. That’s why when we heard that the legendary fish pedicure was arriving in London we simply had to give it a try. We popped down to the new Aqua Sheko centre in High Street Kensington for a piscatorial pedicure with a difference.

The VenueAqua Sheko itself is set off the main road on Holland Street. Decked out in sleek, oriental style with black leather seats and sparkling blue tanks, you could be forgiven for mistaking it for a fancy lounge bar. The venue specializes sole-ly (sorry!) in fish pedicures and is the first place to do so in London. The...

‘Cougars’ boost figures in more ways than one

Looking to age purrrfectly? They say you’re only as young as the man you feel, and it seems that the cosmetic surgery industry couldn’t agree more. Flying in the face of the recession, a growing catalogue of treatments aimed at women over 45 has seen numbers of operations go through the roof. The so-called ‘cougar’ group now accounts for a third of all tummy tucks as well as a third of breast enlargements and uplifts.

The trend began in the USA with role models like Sex and the City’s Kim Cattral, Cougar Town’s Courtney Cox and of course the queen of the cougars, Demi Moore. Ladies everywhere coveted their sexy figures, youthful complexions (and companions!) and ‘life begins at 40’ attitudes. In an interview with a reporter from The Sun, Shami Thomas of the Transform Group explained that...

Dance your way to fitness in 2010

Following a weekend of glorious sunshine it seems that summer is just around the corner, if not here already. As the days get longer and hemlines get shorter we all find ourselves thinking about how to get into shape, and what better way than with ‘Big Dance 2010’, a series of events celebrating the nation’s favourite art form.

Each treatment costs just £10, 10% of which goes to the ‘Mothers for Children’ charity as part of Elemis’ ‘year for caring’ campaign. The Spa-bus team hope to raise more than £ 50,000 for the charity and your donation will go towards supporting vulnerable young people and inner-city children as well as improving the quality of life of orphans in developing...
