The Wahanda guide to men's makeup

With the number of men visiting spas and salons for treatments rapidly rising as well as specialist skin, makeup and nail ranges now being marketed only towards men, are the sexes having an image war? After footballer Wayne Rooney opted to splash out on a hair transplant to combat his loss of locks and the transformation of cricketer Shane Warne’s looks since pairing up with actress Liz Hurley, men are choosing to pamper and care for themselves just as much as women do. And why not?

With more men seeking out grooming treatments in the past few years (we’re calling it the David Beckham effect), we've come a long way from the days of the cave man to reach a time where masculinity meets the modern metrosexual; where sharing moisturisers and owning separate makeup bags are the norm. After...

The new technology in tanning

Since the original fake tan Coppertone hit the shelves in the 1960s, the bottled beauty buys have long been associated with an unattractive orange tone. However, times have (thankfully) changed and now we can all develop a streak-free golden brown tint in no time – good news for busy indoor types who want a convincing healthy-looking hue.

Most fake tans contain the chemical dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the colour changing ingredient. Accidentally stumbled upon by German scientists in 1920 and derived from sugar beet and cane, this colourless sugar reacts with amino acids in the skin's surface to produce a brown tone on the skin. But thanks to the brains behind the beauty industry, there are now plenty of choices out there that develop that coveted colour in their own special ways. What...

9 in 10 women over 30 avoid exercise due to lack of self-esteem

Do you ever want to go for a run but step back because you’re too nervous? A survey by mental health charity Mind has found that 90% of women over 30 avoid outdoor physical exercise due to a lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem.

Their ‘Feel better outside, feel better inside’ campaign surveyed over 1,400 women and found that although 98% knew of the physical and mental advantages of exercise, 3 out of 4 women preferred to comfort eat or spend time alone instead of exercising.

Two thirds of women admitted they felt self conscious about their body shape when in public, while another 2 out of 3 women believed that they would not be able to keep up in an exercise class and will be embarrassed in public if they struggle to learn the moves.

It’s not just our bodies that are holding us...

Londoners - ditch the tube and do a Home Run

Londoners, how many times have you missed out on that exercise class, quit the gym or not exercised for a fortnight because you just have no time? We know the feeling. Botox to be offered on the NHS

The Botox jab, which helps eliminate the appearance of wrinkles, frown lines and freeze facial muscles, is now to be offered on the NHS in England and Wales for chronic migraine sufferers. Not only a well-loved beauty treatment, this time-eraser can now be used to treat those blinding migraine attacks.

We’ve got to know the wrinkle-reducing injections as the wonder stuff used by celebrities to leave them looking more youthful (and sometimes a little doll-like), making Botox a top product on many people’s wishlists. But while the rich kids use it to tighten the appearance of skin, it can now be used to treat muscle spasms and even stop excessive sweating when injected into the armpits.

Receiving approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010 as a treatment for chronic...

Makeup map of Britain

Leading makeup retailers have released figures that show the beauty differences across the UK. While the northern lasses stock up on fake tan, moisturisers and mascara, the girls of the south pick up more facial serums, lipstick and blushers.

While there is a constant stream of north-south divide jokes and media-created stereotypes from television shows such as The Only Way is Essex, Made in Chelsea and Geordie Shore, this sales breakdown of who buys what and where makes an interesting read.

According to retail brand John Lewis, the northern girls enjoy the more ‘glamorous’ look and are clearly in need of some sunshine - the city of Liverpool spends a whopping 35% over the national average on fake tanning products, whilst southern women spend 21% more on facial serums and oils in the...

The little wonder syrup has also been linked to preventing cancer and Alzheimer’s, as well as helping in the fight against the common cold. From treating wounds to soothing stomach upsets, the golden liquid tastes pretty good on toast too.

The average bee will only make one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime, so to make the most of the good stuff we’ve picked out our favourite ways to...

Why exercise is for more than just losing weight

If donning those lycra shorts and trainers and heading out for a bit of hearty exercise only occurs to you after you’ve spent a week indulging in too much food, it’s time to re-think your regime. We're gearing up for our beach body goals at Wahanda, but fitness is a must-have for the whole year round - because while it's great for toning up, exercise does much more than just work on the outside...

The natural happy pillEnjoy the so-called ‘runner’s high’ with a brisk bit of exercise. When exercising for either a long period of time or in brief intervals that really push your body to work to the limit, endorphin production is activated in the body and leads to feelings of being naturally happy.

Usually released to combat pain and extreme fear, endorphins can also be activated by spicy...

The Wahanda community - be sun safe and fake it

This week we’ve been celebrating all things sun-savvy for Sun Awareness Week and learning more about staying safe in the sunshine. While the sun is lovely to sit out in and relax with a good book, it’s always best to cover up with sun cream and protection to reduce the risks of skin cancers, sunburn and leathery skin.

We here at Wahanda love sprucing up our skin with some fake tan or treating ourselves to a professional spray tan. With summer fast approaching, we’ve picked out three of our favourite questions from the Wahanda community on how to be brilliant at bronzing. With so many beauty myths out there it's hard to make sense of all the tips and tricks, so come over to the Wahanda community and ask the experts...

Is there anything I should do to prepare before going to get a spray...

Travel essentials for the sunshine

Ready for the summer but not ready for the side effects it brings to your skin? To celebrate Sun Awareness Week and help everyone to become a bit more sun-aware, we’ve rounded up our five favourite products to pack in your suitcase for those summer holidays...

Mosquito spray:

Don’t feel the sting and remember the mosquito repellent. Feeling the burn of a raised mosquito bite is a frustrating and an itchy subject, so always make sure you spray yourself before heading outside. Whether it’s in the garden or away on holiday, stop these little blood-suckers from having their next meal or any chance of passing on nasty diseases such as malaria and yellow fever.

Our favourites are the Jungle Formula range, where even those with sensitive skin can repel nasty bugs with a special alcohol...

Half of girls 'put off exercise' by school PE lessons

Remember the good old school days? Have vivid memories of wearing hot pants and a polo top to practice gymnastics in a cold sports hall alongside 30 other girls? A new survey has found that half of all school girls are so scarred by their experiences of physical education classes that they have been put off exercise for life.

Can you remember standing in line as the ‘captains’ (also known as the sportiest kids in school, usually) painfully went along and picked out, in order, the fittest and sportiest classmates to join their teams? Yes, we don’t fancy going back to school either - no wonder it's put a dampener on keeping fit.

Conducted by the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, the research showed that young girls are put off future exercise by their school gym lessons - 45% of girls...

Protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun

Summer’s nearly here and the sun will soon put his hat back on, but how many of us will be joining in and putting our hats on to cover up? New research from La Roche-Posay shows that around half of the UK population don’t wear sunscreen when the weather turns nice on our shores, and with over 100,000 new cases of skin cancer being diagnosed each year in the UK, it's a problem we need to fix.

On average, a shocking two thirds of sun damage is done before you’ve reached your 15th birthday from those pesky UVA and UVB rays emitted from the sun. To highlight Sun Awareness Week (30th April- 6th May 2012) and top tanning brand Fake Bake’s Melanoma Month campaign, we’ve compiled the best ways to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun.

Sun protection creams:

Tried and tested: Beauty Works Diamond Peel Kit for Face and Body

Need to buff before you start tanning this summer? We've been fans of microdermabrasion for years and love a trip to the salon for the treatment, but now we can do it at home.

This nifty little gadget from Beauty Works exfoliates dead skin cells away from the top layer of the epidermis to reveal new skin underneath. The microdermabrasion action is said to encourage scars, acne marks and fine lines to become less visible, and can help to even out skin tone.

As the cells are gently removed and blood circulation is encouraged to the area, the exfoliating movement promotes the renewal of cell tissue and help to improve overall skin complexion - obviously, this sounded good to us so we couldn't wait to give it a go.

The product

The at home exfoliating system by Beauty Works is designed...

Making the beauty industry go green with Beauty Recycled

Have you ever wondered what happens to the packaging of that lovely scrub or lotion that’s just been used on you in your trip to the spa? No, we haven't either. Too relaxed and halfway to the land of the nod, we’ve only taken interest in the contents of what’s inside that packaging, not the recycling prospects of that glass jar or tube.

Unlike us, beauty therapist Lucy Hird has thought about the hundreds of empty containers that are mindlessly thrown away into rubbish bins from spas and salons. The 25-year-old noticed that this lack of recycling was a common problem across the UK’s beauty industry, so she's launched the Beauty Recycled campaign in the aim of turning the pink industry green - and we think it's a brilliant idea.

Lucy's research led her to find that around 70% of spas are...

Celebrate International Dance Day 2012

Let’s dance. Sunday marked this year’s International Dance Day, which, now in its 30th year, celebrates the art of dance and its ability to cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers to bring people together.

International Dance Day is enjoyed across the world every year on April 29th. In recent years, dance has become an increasingly popular way to work out and get fit thanks to dance groups like Diversity showing how it’s done and popular shows like Strictly. Often so fun that you forget you’re doing some hard cardio work with that body of yours, it’s a great way to slim down, tone up and feel better. Why not give it a go and become the Lord of the dance...

Shake it up. The fun dance-exercise of Zumba took the nation, and the world, by storm in the past couple of years...

Drip, drip, drop, little April showers. Can you believe it’s the end of April already? Time may be flying by, but at least the end of the month means it's pay day for most of us and we can get back to treating ourselves once again - so you're in the right place.

Over on the Wahanda community, it seems that a lot of you are thinking about your health rather than just pampering. Here’s a quick look at some of the questions that you lovely lot have been asking the experts this week:

I'm a bit anaemic. Any suggestions on how to balance exercise and diet without getting too tired?

Anaemia is the most common disorder of the blood, resulting in a decrease of red blood cells or lack of iron in the haemoglobin, but it often goes unnoticed thanks to its regular symptoms of tiredness, weakness...

Unleash the power of beetroot for better exercise

Can beetroot give you a helping hand while you exercise? New research has revealed that eating whole beetroot or drinking beetroot juice enables muscles to work for 16% longer - that’s a pretty impressive extra ten minutes on top of an hour’s exercise. The fabulous purple vegetable has a very high level of nitrates, which have been proven to increase performance when exercising.

Scientists at St Louis University discovered that athletes who ate 200g of baked beetroot before exercising were able to run, on average, five kilometres faster than those who ate the same amount of cranberry puree. Both foods contain a similarly equal amount of calories but a stark difference in levels of nitrates.

Their results found that after eating the cranberry sauce, the average running speed was 7.3 miles...

How to fight hay fever the natural way

Runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing your way through the day? You might be one of the 12 million hay fever sufferers in the UK. While everyone else is celebrating the arrival of spring, you’re probably stocking up on tablets and tissues. With allergy season well underway and National Allergy Week coming up (23rd-28th April), we’ve created a guide to recognising hay fever and the best ways to naturally combat the sneezes once and for all...

What is hay fever?

While the name suggests you might get incredibly hot by visiting a nearby stable, it’s actually a reaction to different pollens transported through the air in the wind. The name originates from the way that pollen sticks to hay in the countryside, but it’s now argued that increased levels of pollen occur due to the particles...

It’s the London marathon this Sunday 22nd April and if watching all those lycra-clad runners inspires you to get fit for summer and take up running, check out our top ten tips to get you running faster than the Energiser bunny...

Beginner’s luck:

If you’ve never run before then try and start slow. There’s no fun in taking off and having to stop ten seconds later with a stitch. Try a few long walks to get your leg muscles accustomed to working hard, and if you’re feeling brave incorporate a gentle jog at intervals as you go. This will build up stamina and also get you used to working different breathing patterns too.

You’re pulling my leg:

If you suffer from any leg or feet problems, such as shin splits or knee issues, it may be best to see your local GP or a professional before...

Melvita are bee lovers by name and by nature – the name itself means honey (mel) and life (vita) in Latin and the company stems from a passion for bees and their role in the world. In celebration of Earth Day this Sunday, we couldn’t wait to try out their organic honey-filled products, which help to moisturise and repair weakened skin barriers. Using a unique ‘3-Honey Complex’, the range helps to replenish lost nutrients in the skin and prevents dry skin from coming back.

Stay lucky on Friday 13th with health and beauty tips

It’s Friday 13th again, and though it happens at least once a year it’s still thought of as a day to dread thanks to the well-known myth that it’s an unlucky date.

The fear of the number 13 is termed triskaidekaphobia (we can’t pronounce it either, don’t worry) and worldwide the dodgy digit is often thought of as being unlucky or evil. Some planes, buildings and streets skip their 13th row, floor or houses due to the fear that it may bring bad luck.

Whether you’re superstitious or not, we thought we’d pull together a few superstition-inspired health and beauty tips just in case…

New research demonstrates link between food intolerance and weight gain

Do you struggle to beat the belly bulge, even though you eat as well as you possibly can? If so, you may be one of thousands of people who unknowingly suffer from a food intolerance that stops that annoying excess weight from disappearing.

If the Easter break has left you feeling bloated and you fancy losing a bit of weight for the summer bikini season, new research could provide the answer and help shift the pounds.

Allergy UK estimates that 45% of the UK suffers from food intolerances. Food intolerances are different from allergies; reactions are more delayed and in some cases take up to three days to manifest themselves – and you may unknowingly suffer with pains, skin problems or the general feeling of ‘being unwell’ for some time because of it.

Research published in Obesity and...

Edinburgh Salt Cave celebrates World Asthma Day

We’ve been fans of salt therapy (or halotherapy to be precise) since we first discovered it had launched over here, thanks to its promise to beat respiratory problems with a sprinkle of salt and to give you the chance to enjoy a big gulp of fresh air – which makes a real change in the Big Smoke. Since it first arrived in London, the Salt Cave phenomenon has spread through the UK and now has four locations nationwide.

We know that eating too much salt is bad for us, but those little grains on the dinner table might help to rid you of breathing difficulties and allergies. The treatment involves relaxing in a man-made salt cave, is completely drug-free and even safe for children to use. As you lie back, relax and take deep breaths, the salt in the air reaches into the very corners of your...
