In the words of BABTAC Chairman Kim C.A. Ford- this year's BABTAC Awards have been the best so far. With 9 categories and 25 finalists plus the original founding members attending, the awards have been going from strength to strength.
Celebrating their 35th Jade anniversary with a special awards ceremony at the Royal Garden Hotel in London Kensington, Kim proudly announced at the start of the proceedings: “You are all winners”. She explained later that the selection process was arduous and caused plenty of debate internally as the standards of the applications were so high.
Kim mentioned that she was particularly proud that the Elizabeth School of Beauty in South Africa won the CIBTAC Centre of the Year award. With so much media coverage focusing mostly on bad news and the recession, Kim believed that “it's time for amazing news”.
She thanked the BABTAC, CIBTAC and the board for all their support and dedication, as well as the Director of Operations Julie Speed and also Hannah and Kelly in Marketing. Kim also said that she was really proud to launch the new Barry M make-up box with the BABTAC logo and starting a collaboration with Wahanda.
Speaking to one of the finalists in the Makeup Artist of the Year category, Rachel Dunn, whose passion for makeup started at 14 was highly inspiring as Rachel not only has 5 years experience in the makeup industry but also runs make up workshops at a local dance school teaching 13-16 year olds. Using Simply Beautiful Cosmetics and high street buys, she helps to put together creative looks that can be easily reproduced at home.
Talking of inspiring people, the Lifetime Achievement Award went to 96-years-young Joan Thornycroft, who has had a sparkling 70 year career in the beauty industry.
Among the winners, two ladies are worth mentioning- Jill Yvette Painter and Laurie Ardeman. Jill won the Beauty Industry Entrepreneur of the Year for her 30 year commitment in the industry and for creating a whole new wellbeing treatment, combining facials with holistic therapies such as reflexology and Indian head massages. The treatment was launched officially a year ago after 3 years in development and Jill will also launch her training academy later in the year to share her experiences and her unique new therapy with other professionals.
Laurie Ardeman is the owner of Skin Deep Beauty Clinic, winner of the Salon of the Year award. The award was presented by Wahanda's CEO Lopo Champalimaud. Laurie recognised the hard work of the therapists working with her; she started the business 20 years ago that has expanded into a team of therapists who have been at the clinic for 8-9 years. Laurie expressed how the salon is a great place to work with a strong group spirit, entering the BABTAC awards because she truly believed that the hard work from the team needed to be acknowledged publicly.
BABTAC has been the leading voice of the professional beauty industry for 35 years and thanks to the annual awards we are getting to know the future stars in the beauty sector.
