Wahanda loves: our favourite autumnal beauty buys

Autumn signals two things: a drop in temperature (which means it's time to swap the summer wardrobe for the considerably thicker winter one), and darker days which makes getting up in the morning that little bit harder.

We must remember that autumn is perfect for a few things - wearing darker (more complimentary) shades, loads of layering and experimenting with a more mysterious makeup palette. Unfortunately, cold weather also plays havoc with our health and beauty; fluctuations in temperature, scorching showers followed by freezing cold air, and a hot office followed by a stuffy train will send your skin into frenzy.

To ensure you’re prepared for the gusty autumnal weather, here are some super-salubrious winter-shielding beauty products we swear by.

Tried and tested: massage and microdermabrasion at MySpa95

In the quest for ‘baby bottom’ skin, we’ll try just about anything – masks, facials and perhaps even a few lasers. While not thrilled at the prospect of such vigorous exfoliation, we must bear in mind that microdermabrasion is one of the most popular beauty treatments on the market right now – it must be doing something right. As the temperature drops and we’re granted fewer hours of glorious sunlight, our skin needs all the TLC it can get to ensure it survives the winter.

At Wahanda HQ we love the complete package, so coupling a facial with a Swedish massage seems like a no brainer - we tried both at the holistic haven that is MySpa Number 95.

The venue

MySpa at 95, a modest-sized spa located in a large, glass pharmacy on Streatham High Road, south London. MySpa boasts three ambient...

Seaweed could fight tooth decay

Seaweed could fight tooth decay

Special enzymes found in seaweed microbes could help to protect the teeth against decay better than traditional toothpastes and mouthwashes. Researchers at Newcastle University began studying the enzyme for its ability to clean ship hulls. They eventually realised its ability to strip plaque and fight bacteria that cause tooth decay. We hope that we mix the enzyme with our toothpaste or mouthwash, and needn’t brush our teeth with actual seaweed.

Dr. Nick Jakubovucs at the University’s school of Dental Science found the special enzyme can remove undesirable bacteria from plaque. Plaque is a soft, colourless deposit that forms on the surface of the teeth - it can be removed by brushing teeth regularly and flossing. Calcified plaque is slightly more serious and occurs when plaque hardens...

Wahanda's smashing tennis glossary of terms

Wimbledon fever has arrived, along with temperamental weather and plenty of Pimm’s to see us through the two-week sporting event. But do you know your ace from your deuce, your umpires from your ball boys? Us neither.

For those unfamiliar with the quintessentially British game, we’ve provided a handy glossary of tennis terms - so even if you’re an amateur you can come across as a complete professional to your friends.

Ace is shouted when the receiver fails to return or touch the ball; the server wins the point.

Deuce refers to you and your enemy sitting on 40 points each, which is always a crucial time in the game.

Deuce is followed by advantage which is the point being played – whoever wins the point wins the game.

Much like the actual word, lob means to smash the ball...

New Dr. Jart+ Beauty Balm range launches in the UK

BB creams have been dominating the shelves in beauty stores lately and now it’s time for them to move over and make space for the latest addition. Dr. Jart+ is a Beauty Balm product line originating from Korea – where the flawless skin craze initially began.

Developed by an experienced team of 21 dermatologists back in 2004, the Dr. Jart+ dermatological skincare range is one of the hottest beauty finds in Asia. The current collection boasts four beauty balms, which may not sound extensive but given that most BB creams that have reached the UK have had a one-size-fits-all approach, variety is key. Tight underwear could hinder male fertility

Here’s one for the blokes, and we’re sure they’ll be surprised by this little nugget. Recent research at the University of Manchester compared 939 men with a low sperm count and 1,310 men with a high sperm count, in order to understand the factors that affect those all important swimmers.

In the pursuit of parenthood, men have often curbed their mischievous ways over the years in the hope of better chances of conceiving, but it may all have been in vain. The study found that the usual suspects - smoking, alcohol and recreational drugs – do have a minimal affect on sperm. However, the research conducted by the University of Manchester suggests it’s not his weekend antics that have the biggest impact on a man’s swimming sperm count – it’s his tight underwear.

The optimum temperature for...

Atkins linked to high cholesterol and heart disease

The highly popular Atkins diet is said to be linked to high cholesterol – a large contributor of heart disease. The low carb, high fat diet created by Dr. Atkins suggests removing refined carbs from the diet so the body focuses on fat burning instead of carb burning – all very well, but it’s been found to have some undesirable side effects.

The 25 year research study, led by Professor Ingegerd Johansson from the Umea University said: “While low carbohydrate/high fat diets may help short term weight loss, these results of this Swedish study demonstrate that long term weight loss is not maintained and that this diet increases blood cholesterol, which has a major impact on risk of cardiovascular disease."

The research study was launched in 1986 after a high number of Swedes in the north of...

Fake tanning for men – Wahanda’s guide

Tanning technology has developed by the bottle load over the past few decades as sporting a glowing tan has become even more popular. Gone are the days of naughty sunbeds, harsh rays and outdated stereotypes – it’s all about faking it. No longer just a ladies game, tanning is becoming increasingly common among guys wanting to look healthy, toned and athletic, and we really can’t blame them. Celebrities like Peter Andre (who’s the lovely face of Fake Bake) and The Only Way is Essex’s Mark and Arg are all tanning supremos.

Manly mists

With so many tanning options available it’s difficult to know which is the right one, especially for blokes who want a subtle tan that looks healthy and defines the muscles. Spray mists provide very light coverage, which dries instantly to avoid streaks so...

Party drips - the new celebrity health fad

Here and across the pond, celebrities are shelling out hundreds of pounds on the new hangover-cure craze. Known as a party drip, the scientific concoction contains vitamin C, vitamin B, zinc, magnesium and B12 and is introduced intravenously to the body. If you don’t care for needles, the party drip is a morning-after remedy you should avoid at all costs.

Favoured by celebrities, including raunchy Rihanna who recently tweeted a photograph of the drip in action as well as Simon Cowell and Dannii Minogue, the party drip costs a whopping £250 for 250ml. The vitamin-rich shot is being used to cure the awful effects of a hangover or oncoming illness – now we know a hangover can be painful, but we’re not sure we’re willing to squander that much cash over it…

The crazy cocktail is supposed to...

Hydration - as simple as a cup of tea

It’s the first day back from a long weekend of celebrating, and we’ve some marvellous news for you: recent studies in Australia have found tea and coffee contribute to our daily water intake without the dehydration from caffeine acting as an opposing factor – so, one lump or two?

It’s recommended we drink around eight glasses of water (or between 2 or 2.5 litres) a day, but you don’t have to stick to the tap – you can top up your levels with foods and other drinks. Keeping hydrated is extremely important as water represents around two thirds of the adult body; that’s all we need to know to ask for a refill...

Why we do it

Hydration is necessary for almost every bodily function, from the organs right through to the cells. We need water to regulate the body’s temperature – the sweaty...

How to pick sunglasses for different face shapes

Just like searching for sales bargains, purchasing sunglasses can be very hit or miss. Sunnies tend to be more of an impulse purchase, snapped up as soon as the skies clear or in a panic when a fail-safe pair goes AWOL.

As a result, we tend to shell out on frames that don’t suit our facial contours or our ever-changing hairstyles. Even worse, such hurried purchases sometimes end up doing very little to protect our eyes from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

In the glasses world, it’s considered good practice to buy sunglasses according to your face shape, as opposed to matching your current hair colour to your shades - even if bright hues do happen to be on trend in both camps this season. Fashion fads are bound to pass, and a classic set of frames that really suit your features can easily see...

The extensive range of colour-popping make up includes lip colour in neon pink and deep purple, lip pencils in fuchsia and blackened plum, eye shadow and eye liner duos in a...

Pick of the best afternoon tea and pampering offers

It’s the nation’s favourite tradition, and one we hope will live forever - it’s none other than the great, English afternoon tea. Nothing quite oozes quintessential England better than a hot brew. Whether it’s at breakfast, elevenses, a post-lunch pick me up, high tea or an after dinner digestive – every time is a time for tea for we Brits. Made popular by the upper classes, the nobility and the monarchy, afternoon tea was first introduced in the early 17th century and in spa land it’s still going strong.

Amid the madness of the upcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations, we’re sure the Queen will want to unwind with an extra cup of Earl Grey, her favourite tea. We’ve unearthed a few exclusive afternoon teas which provide more than just scone and jams; these afternoon teas are sandwiched...

Weird facials the celebrities swear by

In the quest for perfect pores, celebrities are unashamedly dabbling in a range of peculiar products with the aim of achieving softer, younger looking skin. The celebrities are lapping up these bizarre beauty facials, but who’s doing it and just how far will they go?

Victoria Beckham

Our fashion favourite, Victoria Beckham, has been noted for her use of sheep placenta facials. The product is created using stem cells extracted from the sheep, which are frozen and then mixed with a gel to create the freaky facemask. The skin is prepped using a LED light which is supposed to aid skin regeneration for goddess-like, line-free skin.

However, Victoria doesn’t just stop there – she also swears by the use of nightingale excrement - known as a Geisha facial. We’re not sure how excited we are at...
