Body talk: the language of our organs - the large intestine

Each one of us is born with a unique set of physical strengths and weaknesses. Similarly our visceral make up as well as our emotional processes are specific to us and intimately linked. One way of understanding our bodies’ subtle physical expression is to observe our emotional state. This gives us information which can be directed towards greater physical well being and emotional stability by addressing the specific organ involved with that particular emotional response.

The following is based on traditional Chinese medicine and the work of Chiropractor Doctor Jean-Pierre Barral.

Each blog will deal with a different organ for the next 12. Those are:

Stomach and Duodenum, Spleen and Pancreas, Liver, Gall Bladder, Small Intestines, Colon, Kidneys, Bladder, Genitals, Heart, Lungs, Adrenals and Thyroid

The Large Intestine

The Large Intestine, also called the Colon, is really a continuation of the Small Intestines only separated by a set of sphincter muscles ensuring that the waste content of the Large intestine does not back up into the Small Intestines. Together with the Stomach, the Small and Large Intestines form the digestive tract. Although the more obvious function of the Large Intestine is elimination of digestive waste it also is the main site of water absorption.

1. Emotional description: Imbalance of the Large Intestine will show as an inability to let go. This can be apparent with money and come out as stinginess, or in an obsession to control and be expressed as obsessive/compulsive tendencies. A guilty personality, which keeps reflecting on past mistakes, will also be reflecting an inability to let go. Occasionally imbalances of the Large Intestine will be reflected by an inability to hold (job, relationship, etc.) and commit

2. Physical symptoms: Constipation and/or diarrhoea are the obvious symptoms associated with the Large Intestine. Lower back pain and menstruation/fertility issues can also relate to the large Intestine

3. Taking care of the Large Intestine: Caffeine and nicotine are irritant and stimulant to the Large Intestine and are best avoided in case of diarrhoea. Foods rich in fibre are beneficial to the Large Intestine and the function of elimination. Fibres, which are water soluble as in Flax, Oats and most vegetables, are best. Hydration is essential for a healthy Colon

4. Associated colour: It is associated with the colour red.

5. Associated Chakra: It is associated with the Base Chakra.

6. Affirmations, which support the Large Intestine: I am clean and good and worthy of being loved. I let go and let God.

7. Exercises, which support the Large Intestine: Lower back exercises that focus on strength and flexibility of the lower back and core muscles will help keep the Large Intestine properly supported as will using a stool under the feet when sitting on the toilet.
