Not to say “we told you so” or anything, but when we were casting our eye over The Sunday Times’ Ultimate 100 British Hotels last week, we couldn’t help but notice some of our favourites (five to be precise) were featured among the top ten Spas. So again, not to say, “we told you so”, but um, well we did sort of. In fact we’ve been raving about some of these luxurious spas for years. Perfect for ‘Proper pampering’ according to The Sunday Times, and Wahanda – did we mention we’ve recommended a few of these too? – here are five of the best spas in the country…
Situated in Darlington, in the heart of County Durham, Rockliffe Hall (pictured above) is a luxurious, five star hotel. Inside the doors of this gothic mansion guests will find 50,000 square feet of indulgent spa facilities including a tepidarium, caldarium, tropicarium (who knew there were so many ‘arium’s?), hydropool, ice fountain, sound wave therapy beds and state of the art gym. On top of all that, Rockliffe Hall offers an extensive treatment menu (using products from Comfort Zone and Dr Murad) and a staff of highly experienced therapists, fitness advisors and holistic practitioners who are all on hand to help you achieve beauty, anti-ageing and fitness goals, and, above all, relax.
One of Yeotown's local walks
On a slightly less relaxing note, a trip to Yeotown in North Devon is all about sweating your way to optimum physical and mental wellbeing. Once an 18th century farmhouse, Yeotown has been converted into an award winning haven for all things health and fitness. Recent winner of Conde Nast Traveller’s ‘Best Spa Retreat UK’, Yeotown is unlike any bootcamp or 'fat farm' you might have come across before. Situated just 15 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, it provides a true escape as well as all the motivation and inspiration needed to change a lifestyle or take the first (and hardest) step towards getting fit.
Located in the heart of the rolling Leicestershire countryside, Ragdale Hall is an award winning health spa that combines state-of-the-art facilities with traditional Victorian architecture. Whether it’s pampering you’re after or a motivational kick up the you know what, Ragdale Hall has something for everyone, including 12 different heat and water experiences and a selection of spa days and breaks perfect for romantic getaways, girly weekends or just a bit of me-time. Winner of ‘Health Spa of the Year’ six times, the commendable ‘Best Destination Spa in Europe’ at the Professional Beauty Awards and Wahanda’s ‘Spa of the week’ – a high accolade if ever there were one – this place knows a thing or two about health and relaxation.
Inside a treatment room at Grayshott Spa
Situated within the stunning Surrey countryside, its plush lawns adjoining 700 acres of National Trust land, Grayshott Spa is a destination spa less than an hour away from London. The spa’s focus is the health and wellbeing of its guests, to whom it offers therapeutic spa treatments, healthy spa cuisine and a variety of fitness classes. Famous for its holistic approach to natural therapy and relaxation, the spa has created a unique and peaceful environment (that has lasted some 50 years) ideal for anyone looking to address specific health problems, get fit or simply get away from it all. It doesn’t hurt that its rural surroundings are pretty easy on the eye too.
The pool at Pennyhill Park
Surrounded by 123 acres of parkland, Pennyhill Park Hotel is situated in the heart of Surrey. Step inside the luxury country house and you will discover an astonishing 45,000 sq ft devoted entirely to relaxation. Home to an impressive eight different pools (including a 25m Ballroom Pool with fibre optic lighting and underwater music), the spa also features a Thermal Heaven heat experience (complete with sparkling ice cave), a golf course, and 21 private treatment rooms. The hotel is stunning (almost entirely covered in foliage), the facilities to die for and the chef has two Michelin stars. What more could you ask for? No seriously, what?
