There's a certain image most of us associate with the term 'summer beauty'. You know the one, gently tousled hair, smudge-free mascara, a magnificently matte t-zone and impeccably highlighted features. That flawless face seems to find its way into advertisements and magazine shoots galore at this time of year - but not our holiday snaps. As effortless as the experts make it look, when you’re battling against hot sun, sweaty conditions and - for the young at heart - a good deal of splashing, looking good is hard. Fortunately there are some long-lasting, weather-proof tricks and treatments that can help. Here are a few of our summer must-haves to help you wave goodbye to shiny, smudgy holiday pics and hello to your inner sun-kissed goddess…
The appropriate amount of makeup to wear during summer is a hotly debated topic. While many of us shy away from it in fear of it slipping off our face, many of us use even more than usual in an attempt to cover shine, sunburn or freckles – FYI we love freckles. Whether you’re a less is more kind of girl or not, no summer makeup bag is complete without a fixing spray to hold your face in place - however much or little makeup you wear. Our site editor Alison used Urban Decay’s All Nighter long-lasting setting spray to keep her makeup in place on her wedding day and swears by it.
When summer heat takes it’s toll and presents itself in the form of a shiny face, our instinct is to cover it up with a good layer of powder. While this instant fix works a charm throughout colder months, during a sweaty summer using it to mattify your look whenever your skin gets a little shiny might leave you more powder than face, clogging a few pores in the process and giving yourself even more to cover up in the long-run. When shine strikes, put down your powder puff and reach instead for blotting papers like NYX Blotting Paper which come in green tea, tea tree oil and blemish control – each in a summer appropriate pastel packet.
The first step towards glowing summer skin is to remove all evidence of winter and a disappointing ‘spring’. This means exfoliating away the dry, dead cells left behind by months of cold weather and central heating. For a deep cleanse that will unclog pores, clear up skin complaints and remove dry barriers to let in more moisture, it’s worth seeing a professional. Most facials will incorporate exfoliation into the treatment, or treatments like Dermaplanning (a non-invasive treatment that uses a tiny razor to remove old skin) or mild chemical peels are particularly effective at removing dead skin and revealing your natural glow. Just be sure to consult with your therapist before a treatment and let them know if you’re planning a trip to a hotter climate.
The last thing hot and sweaty skin wants is to be covered in layers of moisturiser, mattifyer, serum and primer. We need one product that does it all, and thanks to natural skincare experts Witch, we might have found it. Launching this month, their new Mattifying Moisturiser is a lightweight formula that prevents shine, moisturises for 24 hours, provides SPF15, UVA and UVB protection and creates the ideal base for make up. Best of all, despite being designed for oily/combination complexions, this cream is gentle and nourishing enough for dry and sensitive skin. We had a sneak peek last week and were delighted with the results. This multi-tasker is a must-have for anyone planning on travelling light this summer.
As many of us who have spent full days lounging sea or pool-side have experienced, some waterproof mascaras don’t quite live up to their name. Throw in a few tear-inducing factors like hay fever, sun cream in the eyes and particularly beautiful sunsets – just us? – and you’ll find that many of them won’t pass the test this season. So, how’s a girl supposed to have luscious summer lashes without risking panda eyes? Invest in a semi-permanent mascara treatment which works by coating lashes in a blend of powdered thickening fibres, rubber toughened glue and black pigment. The special solution stays put for two to three weeks, making lashes look longer, darker and fuller whatever you get up to...
