I decided to get back into my practise and got a monthly voucher. I found that it was like re-discovering yoga all over again. The variety of teachers and different styles meant I never got bored and the choice between doing classes in a heated room or a normal room helped me detox, tone and feel amazing in my body. I am doing hand stands again!!!!!!! wow! I love this place :-)
Very small groups which means excellent attention to detail and maximum benefit. If you are not in the correct position this will be noticed and corrected so you can be sure you are always doing the correct thing, and safely too.
The positions vary each week so it is not repetetive, you work at a slow and steady pace and feel extremely balanced afterwards. It is energizing and relaxing at the same time, and the groups have people of all levels and abilities so there is no reason to be self conscious.
This is a very relaxed yet effective environment with an excellent teacher.
Really good to have a gym so local. Its small and the fees aren't too expensive with a very good £125 for 90days to any class, any day, any time. Easy to just drop by if you live in West Hampstead and there is parking to be found near by. The staff are very friendly and make sessions enjoyable. Paula's Zumba class is excellent and has a wonderful atmosphere. I have increased my l fitness level twinfold since joining the gym.
Really nice place run along 'not for profit' lines - staff well trained and take a real interest in holistic healing. I'm going for the ayurvedic treatments next - great offer on wahanda!
This was not my first visit to this gym, but the first time for the classes. This gym is very well equipped, is nice, clean and generally very good. However, I found timetable for yoga classes not convenient compared to the other Fitness First around the corner. That’s a pity, because I prefer this gym overall.
I've never been a sporty person and I always found uncomfortable in gyms, but Egoist Body Studios made me change my mind!
I started taking yoga classes (which I find much more intense than I expected), and I found myself extremely ease, thanks to the teachers who follow you step by step (or pose after pose XD) and intimate and welcoming atmosphere.
I loved every minute of it. The staff were so lovely and i got a great workout. It was relaxing and great value, great facilities and the staff really knew what they were doing.
I went to my first bootcamp with my friend and we had a great experience at the Cotswold venue. We have looked at prices in the past and nothing could beat the price we paid. It was great value for money and can't wait to do it again. The booking process was a little frustating but well worth it in the end. The venue gave us everything we needed with clean rooms and excellent healthy meals. I would have no issue booking onto a bootcamp on my own as everyone was so friendly. The staff made the weekend run so well and all of them done a great job making me feel important as an individual rather than just part of group of many. Thank you all very much!
I went on a private yoga retreat with Sylvia Braun at Inner Harmony in Cyprus and it was really fantastic. Being present, breathing, relaxing, and getting stronger and more stretchy all at the same time! The time I spent there has reinforced and developed a whole load of holistic ideas which I'm already using and will be passing on in 2012.
i live locally so a good place to work out with a range of classes, yoga, spin etc, helpful staff and easy to get to although booking onto a class can be dificult.
I always think of this place fondly because the staff are very friendly, interesting and enthusiastic, always making you feel welcome, whoever you may be. They have a comprehensive range of classes and treatments, including various yoga disciplines, meditation styles and so many types of massages. I especially like how they encourage you to focus solely on your own experience without comparing yourself to the others in your class - it creates a sort of world of privacy and contentment. The location is unusual, but very good - easily accessible in the Stables Market of Camden Town, a 5-minute direct walk along the main road from both Camden Town and Chalk Farm tube stations (both Northern line). The facilities are excellent - the equipment superb and the actual rooms calming and atmospheric, which is surprising considering how chaotic it is outside, but this centre feels quite cut off from all of that, which suits its purpose. I especially liked the cute café, which feels like a sort of haven to reintroduce you to the outside world. I recommend looking out to see when they have the £15 for one week of unlimited classes offer, because by trying out 1-2 classes you'll have already made your money back!
lovely place fantastic facilities would definately go again .staff were very professional nothing was to much trouble made you feel at ease layout of the club was a bonus a really enjoyable experience
the classess are on time
the instructor, staff and the environment are very friendly
the classes and environment inspired me alot tha i have decided to join membership though its bit expensive for me.
thanks for giving me the opportunity to experience 2-weeks jim in fitness first
Great location, great friendly staff. I especially found Caroline's Yoga class amazing! She is great. also Zsuzi's spin class is hard core too. It's a small location but has everything. I would seriously think about becoming a member if more Yoga and Spin classes were on offer.
Small but well-equipped gym with a good selection of classes at good times.
Great staff - very friendly and helpful.
Pilates and LBT classes were amazing. Very tough.
I found the yoga a little tame and not really worth my while.
I started to attend Heart and Space in May 2010 as I was looking for a yoga teacher to help with an NLP project I had to complete. After attending a few classes with other instructors and leaving with a feeling that something was missing, I was told about this new venue in the city centre.
As soon as I entered the venue I had a feeling of peace and calm. Christa had only opened a few weeks prior and yet the shop and studio had a very calming influence. Christa as a yoga teacher was and continues to be very patient. During the hatha class she explained in detail what was required and encouraged my body into positions it had not been in since childhood.
I have continued to attend the class virtually every week and have seen my flexibility, stamina and peace of mind increase.
I intend to start attending the ashtanga class as soon as my diary allows and will continue to work with Christa for as long as possible.
i went there and when arrived the staff was welcomed me and offered me a drink. The place looks nice and the people are friendly. The activity was also ok.
I started going to Heart & Space back in March of this year, I stumbled upon this space randomnly.
They say the best things come when you least expect it and it certainly has been that in this case.
I started off with the Hatha Yoga classes, I have lived all over the UK and have never found a class that gives you the time and space as the yoga class did. The transformation has been amazing, Christa works with you indiviually & pushes you gently. Most of the classes I have been too have been 'in then out' attitude. It is the opposite here.
I also invested in a course of treatments for the tension in my neck, shoulders and back. I was advised by the masseuse that my posture was not the best and showed how to sit and given excersizes. He shook me a lot and clicked me into place. Over time I noticed that my posture was a lot better and the pain lessoned - I will say that this is not an over night cure so you need to invest in yourself continuly.
I have also booked the space to run my own workshop all of the delegates loved this space & said they would come back again.
Christa should be really proud of herself for what she has created at this space, if your into the community spirt and don't want to be rushed in yoga classes and are willing to invest in your own well being then check it out!
I attend regular yoga classes at Heart + Space. I feel instantly relaxed the moment I walk through the door. I've practiced yoga at quite a few places but Heart + Space is the only one I've stuck with because Christa is such an amazing teacher and the centre has such a lovely, community feel. At a time when yoga is becoming increasingly corporatised (I think many of us have been to a class where we're literally centimetres away from the person next to us and the teacher doesn't know, much less care, what our name is) this place is like a breath of fresh air. Furthermore classes are incredibly good value. Heart + Space is like my little oasis of calm!
been member for more than 8 years i have never seen they spend any money on club refreb oh shower is cleaner in hostels
all good equipment not high tec but ok after all this is Holmes Place which just changed name
after hard work out in area with no air con for almost 3 month now you go to 1st floor steam and shower you cant get shower as it gose hot and cold all time you go to grand floor shower tiles are lose shower broken i have pesonaly spoken to sparky works there he told me i am just electrician i can not do all job this is holmes place come on maanager you need to do some thing
there is brand new gym will be open near by farringdon i can not wait for them to open so get away from this poorly manged club i have made lots of comment but the manager are always coming up with some thing the cafe area wooden floor was laied down when i moved to barbican flats at 1985 this need to be look at
It was a brilliant and very worthwhile weekend. I felt great when I returned! A really important thing to note is that the benefits of attending the weekend have carried on after leaving and I am much more motivated than before and hope to continue pushing myself more as I have seen results.
Lastly I have to mention the new friends I made and the laughs we had...especially when we weren't supposed to be laughing!! ;) Big thanks to Will and Neil for pulling it all together so well. I would definitely recommend the bootcamp at Flore to anyone thinking of taking part.
This gym is in need of a renovation but it does the job. Not very large and the yoga class only hosts up to 9 people which can be good. The teacher does her job but not much more, I'm used to instructors showing the exercises and correcting people to the right positions. But the deal was of great value and offered exactly what I needed so am satisfied.
It is a great gym with a lot of classes and plenty of equipment. In a convenient location and good opening hours. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a gym.
Gym is perfect even if a bit smaller, Yoga teacher are good enough to fill well energized after a yoga session. I would suggest to follow only Hata yoiga because Kundalini is only meditation.
This was my first ever visit to a Fitness First Platinum club and I couldn't have been more impressed. The lady at the desk could not have been more helpful, she accepted my voucher and explained how the locker system etc worked and where I needed to go to get changed and go for my class.
The changing facilities are lovely, there are showers and a sauna available to use and everything is cleaned to a high standard. There were 6 people in the Yoga class, of varying skills and the instructor was clear to let us know in a friendly how we could do different stretches if we (i.e - me) weren't quite up to the skill of some of the others.
All in all a great experience, I can't wait to check out another class in the week!
After I registed with Fitness First, the head office(I believe) called up to arrange appointment with me to visit FF Spitalfileds, which I appreciated that but I was given appointment on Saturday and turns out the FF Spitalfields never opens on weekends. I finally went there on a Friday when I happen to have a day off, the gym is ok, quite small, was doing pilates class, the teach was great, but the room is very dirty, mattress was the most filthy I ever seen....not sure I want to come back there again. Might try with other Fitness First club...
The women only room at this gym is a real bonus if you want to escape the noise of grunting men. Aerobics sessions are demanding but extremely worthwhile - many calories are burnt! Yoga is taught at a sufficiently challenging level, with an attentive instructor. Would definitely recommend this excellent value deal.
The classes were as you would expect from a gym, although the timetable was rather limited as they only have one studio. The fitness centre as a whole is very small and cramped - a bit of a sweat box to be honest! Could probably do with a bit of a refresh, and some new equipment. The studio was also very smelly. This was made up for by the polite and helpful staff.
I highly recommend Evolve - it's certainly my favourite studio in town. As a dedicated yogi, I've searched London for a centre that offers a challenging and dynamic style of yoga (be it power, ashtanga, vinyasa, etc), convenient class hours/lengths, aesthetically pleasing facilities and a balanced environment in which to practice. Evolve has all of these things....add on its amazing location, experienced teachers, online booking options for ease and assurance you can get a mat and voila. Fabulous yoga studio and a tip-top rating from a very picky yogini!
Good gym. Everything you need. Good classes and facilities. However, the booking system is a bit difficult, as you have to book for evening and weekend classes by phone on the day before it gets booked out.
Fantastic teachers and clean, comfortable venue that is a short deistance from the tube station. The teachers have been doing yoga for years and the instruction is much better than most gyms.
decent facilities, good classes, good value for money overall. staff were pretty friendly and no hassle with the passes or to join the gym. can't go wrong with five classes for five pounds. also right next to my house.
Professional staff and good facilities. The yoga class was surprisingly good for a 45 minutes session but it was a bit hard to relax as you can hear the thumping music in the main space from the spin class. Bit stuffy as it's a basement space but it was reasonably ventilated.
Classes are good and they have a decent selection but overall the facilities are quite cramped, tired and grubby looking. You definitely want a shower after visiting and not in a good way! The whole place could do with a refurb really. Some staff were helpful but mostly seemed inexperienced and inconsistent.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a great range of classes put on at convient times. The classes were really good and the instructor was very encouraging! Will definelty use this gym again and am considering joining.
Very friendly welcoming staff. Clean changing rooms and showers/toilets. Fairly spacious changing rooms for the size of the place. Class instructors are all very good and professional. The only problem I have is that there is only one studio (which I gues is normal in a club this size) and its is very small, made worse by the amount of equiptment stacked up around the room - bikes, weights, steps.
You can't really have more than 10 people for any one class and more like 8 for step or pump.
This could mean it would be hard to get in to a class during peak times - at the moment it's not so bad due to the fact that it's August and a lot of people are away. I would still very much recomend this gym.
Sparkly new gym! fantastic location nearby work! I signed up after my first class for full membership! Jade in membership is great and always asks how things are going and shows a real interest in you and your fitness goals.
The staff and trainers are fabulous! they give you real motivation! I haven't missed a week yet and have lost 7lbs in 7 weeks :)
Spinning on a Monday is a great workout, the Yoga class is intense but very good for toning and Body Pump is tough but fun!
I got the 5 classes for £5 deal so can't argue with the value! I mainly did yoga classes, which (as an absolute beginner) I really enjoyed, but there was a good range of other classes available too. All the instructors were helpful and if I hadn’t quite got it, adjusted my posture until I was in the right place. At the same time there were more experience people in the class who could take the positions further if they wanted to. The studio is along a corridor opposite the male changing rooms and leading to the female ones so there was quite bit of ambient noise and people gawking through the rear glass wall. I didn't use the gym but it all looked good.
The changing rooms were nice with great power showers. I used the sauna, steam room and aromatherapy room, all very enjoyable. However, in the communal area to get to them there was a *horrible* smell. The first time I went I didn't think much of it, assuming it was a temporary problem but I spread the classes over a few weeks and the smell was always there. Considering how much regular membership is – it should really be sorted out.
I checked into Slimmeria over Easter to get away from everything and 'get my head together' (being a stressed out city dweller!), put the 'spring back in my step' (after months of eating lots of rubbish - Percy Pigs were my friend... hehe!) and (hopefully) lose a little bit of weight.
In the end I achieved all that and so much more!! Galia and her team could not have done more to make your stay comfortable and restful. There were great people there too; I made 4 lasting friendships!! The 'exercise' program of walking, yoga and core stability gave me my 'mojo' back and....*drum roll please* I lost 6kg!!!!! (n.b. to put it into perspective I am 6' and had about 2 stone to lose!)
Since I came home I continue to feel the benefits; I have a real spring in my step and continued to eat healthily and exercise, I am still dropping1 or 2 lbs ever week, I am easily one dress size smaller than before Easter and wearing those clothes thatI kept because I will soon fit them (you know what I mean!!) ....
I have finally plateaued and stopped losing weight after a holiday and house selling/buying stress..... But I know that Galia is right where I left her if I need her!! That is comforting but also enough to get myself to put down the cake and go to Zumba!!!
Galia and team - thanks for everything!
Ten Individual Day Passes Including Use of Facilities and Fitness Classes for £19 at The Armoury, Belsize Park (£135 Value)
Good point is that buying a voucher for 10 individual days passes I was allowed to use the gym and attend any of the classes I liked during the whole day. Apart from yoga, that was my first choice, I could also use the gym, or combine it with any other class.
Bad point is that a normal person usually gets tired after one hour of any physical exercises, in case it was performed correctly. And, unless you are a sport freak, or simply enjoy looking at red and sweating faces of random strangers, there is nothing for you to do after you finish your class.
So, my first acquaintance with the club has taken place, and here is my piece of advice for those who are only planning to go there:
1. Call to make a booking: Don’t waste your precious time on useless emails. If you decided what class you want to attend – just call. Following my latest experience with bookings at The Happiness Centre, I made a proof shot, sending them an email with my details and asking for an opportunity to come to their class. In a week’s time, after I gave up all my hopes to receive any kind of response, and the yoga class I was hoping to attend was already unreachable, I called and was successfully booked in.
2. Take some change: If you are

Vicky is a great instructor - she manages to get create a comfortable, relaxed and fun environment in which to practice. There is a mix of abilities in the classes which she caters well for, suggesting different levels of pose so everyone can work to their own ability and she is very good with new students. Highly recommended.
Absolutely my favourite place ever - I have been doing their Frameworks class for about 2 months now and even though it was really hard in the beginning I can now keep up so my fitness levels have definitely improved. Can't beat the feeling of leaving the room afterwards!
I've also taken a beginners yoga class and will definitely be coming back for more.
Excellent choice of classes; the staff and instructors are always very friendly and helpful and the studio has a lovely non-corporate atmosphere.
I enjoy it so much that I'm contemplating becoming a member at the moment (big thumbs up for the transparency on the membership costs which you can just get from their website - wish it was so easy for other fitness studios!) but I also like the PAYG option and the top-up card with discounted class rates.
The whole experience was really fun. I love Poweplate and doing yoga on the powerplate was difficult but rewarding. I really enjoyed the facilities and the instructors. I found it challenging, but hope to return another time.
Beautiful venue on Kings Road, next to Bluebird, with spacious yoga studios and changing rooms.
I got a very warm welcome from the reception desk and both the yoga teacher Joo and the craniosacral therapist Vanessa were excellent. I felt lighter and more supple after the sessions. It's nice to go to a brand new place as everything is pristine and the interior design touches make it very special.
Yoga classes hold 20-30 people each but 1 to 1 yoga can be arranged. Lovely place indeed.
I really enjoyed my 3 days at the blackfriars top notch health club. The gym has everything you need but is not particularly pretty. Nice bis studio though which I did a good yoga class in. The changing facilities are great, complete with towels and hairdryers. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this gym to anyone.
Egoist body is great because you get really nice workout because of the attention you get from the trainers as the groups are kept small. Good quality classes with nice music and the workout is aiming at all the muscles. Also, everyone is really nice and open as you can discuss your exercise programme in order to get the best results. Feeling that you are in a friendly and happy environment keeps you motivated to go to the gym!
I went to Ananda last Summer as a relaxing break from the bustle of New Delhi. Ananda is a five hour train journey from Delhi, but as soon as you get there the stress of travelling melts away. It is tucked away in the mountains (although you can go on excursions) so is quite isolated - we relished the opportunity to escape the outside world for a bit.
On arrival at Ananda you are presented with some prayer beads and a white kurta pyjama. It is not obligatory to wear these, but my Uncle and I donned them straight away and spent the rest of our few days' trip looking like yoga gurus.
A wide range of treatments is on offer at Ananda, from massage through to facials and manicures. My favourite treatment was the hot and cold stone massage, which left me feeling so relaxed I could barely get up afterwards. I also had a wonderful Himalayan facial. Other highlights included a rose petal bath, delicious meals in the restaurant (accompanied by music from a sitar, tabla and bansuri) and a pranayama class with a lovely instructor. My uncle was so relaxed in the pranayama class that he fell asleep after 5 minutes!
Watch out for the monkeys that hang around in the trees outside the hotel rooms and outside the restaurant. Amazing to see.
A truly relaxing experience - I often dream about going back.
I PAID 3600EURO IN ADVANCE FOR A 2 WEEK HOLIDAY FOR MY SON AND MYSELF . THE NIGHT OF OUR DEPARTURE I WAS EMAILED THAT I COULD NOT COME. THE OWNER WAS ILL . I GOT NOTHING OF THE MONEY BACK . LATER I FOUND OUT THAT TROUGH YOGA PEOPLE IN IBIZA THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE KNOW AS CON-ARTISTS. THE OWNER , GABY HAMILTON OR GABY HASTINGS , WAS NEVER ILL .THEY CHEAT PEOPLE ALL THE TIME . BASICALLY THIS PLACE DOES NOT EXSIST , AT LEAST NOT FOR THE PURPOSE YOU MIGHT THINK IT WOULD BE . IT IS A SCAM !!!

Let me get one thing out of the way first: this is an office block hiring space out to yoga and dance instructors and other therapists. I didn't like the building to be frank, it needs some renovation. Next door to the yoga class there was a dance class playing loud music which was distracting to say the least.
Having said that, I was extremely happy with the kundalini yoga class I attended. This is currently a temporary arrangement so call the venue for more information. I was meant to be in a group class but other people (including my friend who was supposed to be there!) couldn't attend, so I had the priviledge of having one to one tuition from Lucy. The class was challenging and focused on discipline, posture, breathing and concentration. Frankly I struggled but soldiered on and after a few tries I managed to complete the hour feeling rather accomplished. The biggest challenge (and I believe many of us have it) was to quieten the mind and have full concentration.
I do recommend Lucy's classes, I just hope she finds a more inviting venue.
I went to the Wellness centre with a friend to see Levi Roots cooking demonstration. As I already have one of his cook books and love the recipes I was couldn't believe it when I saw the demo advertised as it is on his home turf and easy to get to. Very chilled out event with the cocktail making, tasting, band and audience paticipation... the only downside was that we had gone expecting there to be food to taste and so were starving as the night progressed and no food appeared. Apparently it had been throughout the event, but noone was publically announcing it to the audience so we only learnt abou its existance after asking the bouncer if we could have readmittance once we had bought food at the Levi Roots van. The van was giving out pasties and other foods and there was pizza and curry in a different room in the venue.
Vicky's yoga classes are a perfectly balanced physical, meditative and educational workout. She is a confident and accomplished yoga instructor which is projected through her teaching style. I always come away from Vicky's classes feeling 2 inches taller and extremely refreshed.
I had a very positive and motivational experience. Taking hikes in the country side was amazing, it was nice to breathe in fresh air and get a phenomenal workout at the same time.
It was definitely great value and money well spent.
The trainers and therapist were very experienced and I learned a lot of new things about how to benefit the most for my workouts as well as eating healthy delicious and filling foods. The meals that were prepared were very tasty and left me feeling full.
They provide a wide range of fitness routines throughout the day which are fun and the days fly by very fast. I loved the zumba, yoga, circuit training and trying new ways and routines of exercising that I never have before.
I feel detoxed and renewed with more energy than I've had in years!
I recommend this to anyone as there were wide range of ages, male and female with various levels of fitness and endurance during my stay.
I had a fantastic 5 days at the Hillmotts and would recommend the facility/experience to all of those who are keen to be educated in fitness and healthy lifestyle as well as those wanting to have a luxury pamper in the spa.
The staff were amazing, a lot of fun and understanding they really understood what may objectives were, and taught me that exercise and maintaining a health food balance can be exciting rather than daunting.
I left the facility feeling great, full of energy and most importantly motivated to sustain a healthy lifestyle.
Small, cramped quarters, but the class itself was good. Still have four more left, but the Tuesday night, Thursday night and Saturday morning schedule is limiting for me; I'm often only available Mondays and Wednesdays. I like that there are a lot of ways to earn free classes too.
Spent three days at Hillmotts on a fitness retreat. The experience was exhausting and exhilarating and physically shattering and absolutely brilliant. You never know what you can achieve until someone challenges but also encourages you as well as they do at Hillmotts. I worked out so hard for three days, I ate good healthy and very appetising meals, I spent as much time as possible exercising outdoors and spent the time with instructors who knew what they were talking about and were able to impart their knowledge in an interesting and entertaining way which meant that I remembered so much more of it! I also had lots of fun too! I recommend Hillmotts absolutely.
This is a great gym in a nice central location. The gym floor has plenty of machines for when it gets very busy, although I can't say the same about the showers and hairdryers in the locker room-- there is usually a queue at busy times.
All of the classes I have gone to at this Virgin Active have been great. The instructors are very helpful and really know their stuff. My only complaint about the classes is the music-- it gets old pretty quickly.
Totally disappointed by my experience here. Studio was small, very smelly, too cool. The teacher was a nice man, but seemed very inexperienced at teaching and seemed to have minimal knowledge of yoga generally. The class was very small (obviously others who may have come have, like me, not returned), and the students were rather incapable. Not a constructive atmosphere to good yoga practice.
It was my first visit to the YogaWorks in SoHo, and I was curious to see how it would compare to the YogaWorks in the UES. It is a gorgeous space, and quite large, but you can definitely sense that it's one of the busier yoga studios. I was admittedly a bit overwhelmed by how crowded it was on a Thursday evening, but the staff was great and you can sense that they were well-equipped and organized to handle the flow.
I decided to take a Restorative Yoga class and the teacher (whose name I've forgotten) was perfect. The class was just what I needed and I would definitely like to return and take some more Restorative and other classes. I also liked how YogaWorks followed up with me afterwards via email about my experience and the other offerings the studio has.
The only drawback was that the class was full and so not everyone was able to get bolsters, etc.
A friend & I took our little ones to the Mother & Baby Yoga class. The building is lovely; light & spacious and perfect for harmonious activities. However, I found the class was way too busy for any sort of one to one attention; in fact the instructor barely looked at us once! For almost £15, this was a little steep. But otherwise a great way for new mums to meet eachother, and enjoy tea in the downstairs cafe afterwards.
i have been a member at this gym for more than a year and at first i thought that it was ok.. however over time i came to realise that this gym is only money grabbing. they do not care about their customers. the staff are pushy, the management is rude. the coax you into buying a membership and treatment and if your not happy with what you've got they ignore you and refuse to compromise. they treat you indispensible. if the facilities where better then i wouldnt complain but the changing rooms smell, the showers tend to be unclean and gymnasim itself is cramped. i would not go back to another and id advise anyone who wants to join a gym to not goto this one.
Flow Training came to my office when we were experiencing a particularly stressful time. We experienced a sense of well-being, joy and and an insight into to looking at the world with different eyes. Even now years later my colleagues still practise the exercises.
This class is balanced! Just enough stretching. Great breathing to relax. Peaceful, Quiet meditation! After just a couple classes, I feel much more mentally relaxed and muscle tension is much reduced. The instructors are genuine, caring and not pushy. The class is never the same old routine either. Love it!
very friendly staff; just the right pace for me and my state of fitness; friendly group; friendly and helpful ambience; made to feel very welcome and good pace
Tucked away in a quiet street of Belgravia the Light Centre provides a great range of quality Yoga and Pilates classes for reasonable prices.
I had known the centre for a few years, but decided to try one of their classes after I found out that Alan Herdman had held a workshop there.
My first class was a lunchtime Vinyasa Flow Yoga class. It was great! Katie, the teacher was very knowledgeable and the class was energetic and had a choreography that was challenging but also easy to follow.
The class was beautifully instructed, and it was designed to build up your strength and yet stretching every inch of your body. I was left sweaty, energized, stretched and happy.
I had decided to go to the class as I was going through a phase of insomnia, and I was desperate to get back into a sort of normal sleep pattern. And to my amazement it really helped! I felt much more relaxed and a huge release of positive endorphin took over my body. I felt sleepy unusually early that night and enjoyed a long restorative and very much needed night of sleep for the first time in ages. So, a big thank you Katie.
I have been attending Vickyʼs classes for 5 years now and have never enjoyed my yoga practice more! Vicky is by far the best teacher I have come across - her classes are a perfect mix of relaxation and invigoration, for both the mind and the body. Although she obviously takes her practice very seriously, her classes are always fun, inclusive and friendly - open to all without any intimidating or snooty air to them. The range of additional classes and retreats she offers is also excellent - I recently attended one of her two-hour masterclasses, which challenges both mind and body, increasing your stamina, strength and discipline. Vicky always encourages everyone to go at their own pace, however, so you never feel pressured to push yourself any harder than you want to. I have never been on one of Vickyʼs retreats, but it is on my wishlist for this year!
I liked the idea of combining power plate with yoga as these are two of my favourite forms of exercise. The sessions are a bit pricey but with the offer on Wahanda it made it available. I found the staff very responsive - they contacted me almost immediately re booking me in with all the information I needed. It is a shame though that this class is only available one day a week. I would definitely do more sessions but unfortunately it is too far away from me and the full price is a bit out of my range, which is a shame.
a great kundalini yoga experience! Inspiring, heart filled and motivational! I proudly give Sat Nam Yoga 5 stars. This was my first time doing yoga and I loved it! I haven't missed a class since! During class you could just honestly be there and put aside everything and dedicate that time for yourself. I have gained more strength, flexibilty, confidence and I am more in tuned with myself. It is worth every minute! I would definitely recommend Sat Nam Yoga to all my friends and all that read this review! sat nam!
I have been a student of Vicky Oliver for several years. Her wonderful classes at the stunning studio in Earlsfield have been inspirational. I now live in north London, but still travel to Earlsfield as I simply cannot find a teacher that compares, especially her pre natal classes, the very, very best.
Vicky's Yoga Classes, Yoga Days and Retreats offer an unique combination of inspiration, meditation, perspiration and relaxation in Vicky's amazing empathetic style. Her classes are given with love, and reach in to your heart. You'll ache only in your jaws from laughing so much, rather than from over-extending the poses. Her venues are carefully selected to support this ambience. Earlsfield Library is always a pleasure to return to.
Yoga at Earlsfield for me was wonderful. A fantastic space to do yoga in, offering warm and clean facilities. I have known Vicky for over 12 years and she is without question the best yoga teacher I have practised with. She is welcoming and empathic. She instills yoga as a lifestyle and not just a class. I have recently moved to Dorset and I only miss one thing........my yoga with Vicky.
Richard H:
I have done yoga with Vicky for 11 years. She is an amazing teacher with a loyal following, encouraging you to push yourself to the limit but never too far. Every class is unique focusing on a different theme each week so boredom never sets in. Vicky is a dynamic, funny and engaging personality and her class reflects this. Her ability to narrate each yoga pose, step by step is an invaluable aid while her engaging and personal style makes everyone feel that she is a friend. She also does not neglect the spiritual aspect of yoga but uses it as a tool to bring positive energy and thoughtful comment to our lives. I highly recommend her yoga class.
i love the classes, the location (it's at the bottom of my road) but most of all i love the teacher - Vicky Oliver. i've done lots of yoga over the years, with many different teachers but she's the best. Her classes are varied adn aimed at all levels and above all fun!. i've also been on her retreats and they are also great. i'd encourage anyone to come along, you'll get a very warm welcome! i want to reiterate to anyone who maybe considering doing/starting yoga to go to Vicky's classes. She's an amazing teacher and one of the warmest, most generous people i know. Her classes are well paced for all levels and i've also been on her holiday retreats where you get more time to delve deeper into yoga. They are such fun - i highly recomend them!
I love Core Power Yoga at Old Orchard. Great yoga, nice atmosphere, clean, tidy, and really good classes with experienced instructors, Selena is my favorite teacher so far. The heat is great and the humidity is nice and juicy. It has tons of free parking which is really easy and hassle free. It also has a great schedule and a free class once a week. At the end, I love the lemon and lavender wash cloths for savasana.
I am hoping they will open a Core Power closer to my home in Evanston, then I would quit my gym and be a full time Core Power Yogi. (hint-hint)
Namaste!!
My wife and I went to Hillmotts to kick start my fitness and weight loss - a lifestyle change.
I need to lose about 6 stone in total. I lost 6llbs in 5 days at Hillmotts and was a great deal fitter at the end than the start. For example I could not do a single full sit up at the start, at the end of 5 days I could do them for 1 minute without a break, not the fastest in the room but a big improvement. So I was very pleased with the results. My wife attended to support me, she did not really need to lose weight and was much fitter than me but she did feel fitter at the end and had lost 2 or 3 llbs.
We experienced hiking in lovely surroundings. The circuit training was varied and some exercises were very tough. The TRX provided good body support whilst being challenging and interesting. Also did Yogas each day which I was surprised how much I enjoyed.
So I would really emphasise that they manage to deal with people of varying ability effectively and push every one sufficiently to ensure you do make progress with fitness. So for example on the hikes my wife and I went with different groups taking different routes and distances.
The menus were varied and tasty and whilst designed to promote weight loss we did not feel starved at any point. Recipes are provided for all the meals and we took the optional cookery course as well which was excellent with more recipes to take away. Many additional support materials are provided when you leave on nutrition and diet, all very good.
I have rated the facilities as OK but do not be put off by this; it is because I know they plan some significant additions in 2011. The facilities are split between a hotel and the fitness lodge, you are transported to and from each day and it is only 3 or 4 minutes journey.
The combination of fitness training, yoga, spa treatments, hiking, diet and nutrition advice with hotel facilities available in the evenings is excellent. The one area perhaps some improvement is needed is the outdoor (actually in a marquis) circuit training/TRX facility which is probably fine in summer, spring and autumn but could be too cold in the winter weeks we attended, but they still managed to get me sweating!
We met some really nice people also of varying ages and fitness.
This was my first experience of a fitness retreat, would I recommend it for the very unfit and obese (I hate that word but it still fits - but not for long I intend) yes definitely, and would I recommend Hillmotts, yes again and I am sure with the plans Cleo described to me it will be even better in the months and years ahead.
So finally many thanks to Cleo, Neil and the rest of team at Hillmotts for giving me a real boost to become fitter and get down to a sensible weight. I had started before I went and have continued since I left and have lost 2 stone 3 llbs in about 4 and half months, so have 3 stone and 11 llbs to go, which now certainly seems achieveable by summer 2011 .
This is a great place with great teachers who are helpful, supportuive and willing to help. I found the expereince relaxing, a good workout, and worthwhile. i would go back even without a discount.
Dahn Yoga has provided a life changing experience for me. When I first started I was in an emotionally low place after losing my job and moving back home with my parents. I found Dahn Yoga to be very helpful to relieve my stress and anxiety as well as give me something to focus my mind and energy on. After a few months I realized that I wanted more out of the program and have since taken many workshops and have felt my mind, body and spirit grow to much higher levels. If you're looking for a great yoga studio that focuses one more than just moving the body around you'll love it here!
norma, the iyanger instructor was excellenct. gave lots of personal assistance, really noticed what each student was doing and had a sincere interest in helping them do their best, a little difficult to make reservations. supplied mats free of charge.
I went to The Lab with my daughter who has been going there for several months and is "obviously" half my age. I have not been to a Yoga class in over 3 years, so I was a little nervous! My daughter said, don't worry Mom just do what you can do. She is an amazing instructor and will help you along, and will push you but not make you feel uncomfortable.
I must say after the one hour and 15 minute class, I performed stretches and positions I did not think I was capable of! I was totally surprised at myself "as was my daughter". I think the pace and instruction was the best I have ever had. It felt wonderful, "although exhausting" afterwards, and I did not even get sore the next day!
I would Highly recommend this class to beginners and advanced practioners of yoga.
You will be back for more!
This is the newest member of the Crunch family in NYC. They have up-to-date cardio equipment (all with individual TVs or a large one nearby) and the classes are challenging and fun. Just be sure to get there early if you want to get into a class because they fill up in advance.
Though this Crunch location is the biggest, it does show it's age. The layout is confusing for a newbie to navigate and the equipment isn't as up to date as the some of their other locations, but the locker rooms are much more spacious and have more mirrors and spaces to get ready.
I took the AntiGravity yoga class, which is only offered at 59th and 38th street locations, and that was super! The staff is really helpful and friendly and the instructor was skilled and knowledgeable.
Needed a much needed break after closing a tough deal but couldn’t take an all-out vacation. Booked myself at the Rafayel for the weekend since I live a couple of miles away and take advantage of their gym and spa that sounded nice. But the whole experience was beyond my expectations. After a run and weight training at a very well-equipped gym, I took an hour long session of yoga. Extremely relaxing and highly recommended for stressed out professionals out there. Hit the Jacuzzi after that. Wonderful. Booked myself for the entire next day for different treatments, massage, mani/pedi and facials. Lovely staff, great products used, excellent service. It was absolutely heavenly. The therapists are very professional and took great care of the sensitive spots. The best part was the whole feel of being out in some exotic resort, at fantastic prices! The hotel itself is lovely, huge rooms, great showers, the comfiest of beds! You can take advantage of the sun (like I did) and lounge in their Japanese terrace garden and soak in the clean crispness of the hotel and the outside and savour the delicious decadent and colourful cupcakes I carted off from the reception. The food at their restaurant was amazing; the lovely chef whisked up a customized dietary breakkie on my request (Thanks again J!). Ended up having both lunch and dinner there. You have to try their all-health Mediterranean-type of rocket/chicken liver salad. Absolutely yum! All in all, a great exotic holiday away from London in London and great value for money! Am already booked for 2 weekends a month until Jan. Highly highly recommended to all.
Carmen’s teaching is a unique style that allows you to achieve your best, to be true to yourself, and to be aware of your non-limitations. Her sequencing is very thoughtful, as each pose builds upon her mission to push your practice to the next level without damaging your body along the way. She is a gracious teacher, that demands that you give it your all. If you give 100% of yourself throughout her hour and fifteen minute class, no matter your level, you will feel rejuvenated and begin to see results inside and out immediately.
I highly recommend this studio for anyone looking to expand their practice!
I dont know if things have changed since I was here, at that time there were very few classes ( maybe 1 or 2) a day at that ? We scheduled a private class as a birthday present and was not thrilled. It may have also been my boyfriend at the time, who though into yoga, was not interested on his birthday. There was no ambience, or anything else to draw me back and I live so close I could wals to this studio. I hope things have changed!
It is definitely a resort kind arrangement a mile from Kings Road. Good views all around, great food plus fab gym. WE had a great weekend, funnily there was a huge hen party of dozens of girls and they all seemed to have loved the place, lot of champagne and cup cakes were being consumed followed by good workouts. Great treatments in the SPA, will definitely suggest.
Equinox is the best gym in Dallas... Unfortunately, the membership is probably the most expensive in Dallas and I think they are about 2x more expensive than any other gym in the market. They have great classes, best in class cardio machines and flatscreens to help make your runs less miserable, and the facilities are great. There is a lap pool which really helps my cross training. Overall, I think the place is worth the extra money... They also have a spa but I haven't used it.
My favorite thing about El Conquistador isn't the resort's breathtaking vistas or dozens of beautiful pools or private island- it's the resort's Golden Door Spa. Huge gold doors open to a beautiful lobby and the sweet scent of the Spa's own fresh, sweet fragrance... fountains line the way up the spiral staircase past workout rooms and the juice bar. The top floor is where you'll find the Niwa- and to call this a locker room is a sin! It's a soothing Japanese-inspired resting/waiting/bathing area, with sage green tiles. The spa staff have warm hands and kind hearts... I had wonderful massages with tender but firm pressure. You can also choose to have services overlooking the Caribbean!
I have been a member of Pure since they opened 2 years ago. It has been the best time and money I have ever spent! The teachers are incredible, and the staff is always friendly. The location is easily accessible, and the studios are spectacular!
In addition to the wonderful instructors, I have met some of my best friends at Pure Yoga. The studio attracts such wonderful people, and I feel very fortunate to be a member of such a great group of people!!!
GREAT! Staff were very knowledgeable. Free towels and Padlock from some staff - some asked for payment - nobody there for my induction, so had to show myself around. Yoga was perfect. Power plate was great. Changing rooms spacious and clean.
I've taken the Sunday 4:30pm class at Aha a few times and have really enjoyed it. First, I love the space - it's a great, light-filled studio overlooking a tree on Union Street (although it can get steamy at times). Second, the 4:30pm class is great - not quite your traditional yoga session because the teacher brings in lots of different kinds of music and even once an Australian digeridoo! I also like the feel of the community - it's clear that a lot of people come every week. I don't have the time to do that, so my practice is relatively undeveloped, but I still feel comfortable and of course, challenged!
This studio offers substandard instruction and facility. The quality of hot yoga instruction is substandard compared to nearby Bikram yoga studios such as Bikram Yoga Decatur or Bikram Yoga Marietta.
Furthermore, restroom is small and dirty, and the studio is not well maintained.
On top of that, people who run the studios are crooks. I paid $150 on August 10 for unlimited one month pass, to expire on September 10, 2010(written on the receipt). On August 22, 2010(12 days later), I was told that my pass had expired and that I had not paid for the classes, LOL.
If this was not all the problems with this studio, that would be OK. However, on top of that, instructors at this studio SUCK BIG TIME and quality of the instruction is substandard, to say the least.
I lost track time of the time instructors at this studio told me that I'm able to do this or that advanced pose with ease because of natural flexibility. I happen to be a relative beginner suffering from severe back and knee injury, as well as chronic illness. I used to be super stiff before beginning yoga and is able to do advanced pose with ease due to superior yoga instruction I received elsewhere.
If I had to depend on the instructors at this studio to learn how to do advanced poses, I would suck big time, LOL!
If you want your yoga to SUCK BIG TIME unless you are naturally flexible and also be billed twice, try out this studio. Otherwise, go somewhere else.
Both the quality of instruction and condition of facility at Decatur Yoga & Pilates is third rate. On top of that, their billing process is crooked and this business deserve to be driven into bankruptcy.
My sincere hope and prayer is that Decatur Yoga & Pilates go out of business soon, driven by more ethical and well managed competitors. Namaste.
i have been going to Nuffield Health for about a month now and i am very satisfied with everything that i have seen, i have recieved a very warm welcome on every entry and when i go swimming i find the pool is never to busy and that the chlorine levels are very satisfactory as my eyes do not sting.
I joined Fit for All recently and discovered that this is the gym for me! I have joined ‘other’ mainstream gyms (which I will not name!) and always felt out of place as I’m not built like Sylvester Stallone.
Fit for all I feel is a friendly gym where the staff are great, other users of the gym are also friendly and not all muscle heads. The age range goes from 14-90 it seems so there is no pretensions vibe there at all.
I would recommend this gym to anyone who lives in or near Brighton and Hove!
Dr Illson
Great value deal, useful to get insight into what is usually a members only class. Class was good - beginner level but felt like you were working hard - but the teacher was a bit erratic. Small venue, nice reception staff.
I can honestly say that joining Lexy's pregnancy yoga class was one of the best decisions I made during the pregnancy. When I started the class I was frankly terrified of doing anything which might cause me to lose the baby and I was holding my body rigid and keeping myself very protected. Through doing the class I was able to observe how physical pregnant women could be and learned to relax and totally enjoy / embrace my state. I blossomed with a new confidence. The class also involved a certain amount of talking / sharing how we were feeling both physically and emotionally and that was also really helpful as until the NCT classes kicked in towards the final 6 weeks of my pregnancy it was the only forum I had in which to share feelings and ask questions / listen to those asked by others at slightly different stages of pregnancy than me. Finally Lexy often invites in previous class members a few weeks after they have given birth to share their birth experiences and also often involves a doula in those parts of the sessions. It was brilliant to hear how other women had fared with labour and especially how they had coped / adapted when circumstances took them away from their ideal birth plans.
I would thoroughly recommend this class to any pregnant woman, particularly first time mothers-to-be. It might not be traditional yoga, but it embraces many aspects of yoga and combines them with other really useful ante-natal support / preparation aspects, especially breathing, relaxation techniques and helpful positions for labour.
This was the first time I'd used the powerplate machine and whilst it look some getting used to, I certainly felt that I was using my muscles in ways that conventional exercise doesn't permit. I really liked the place and the friendliness of the tutors.
I can't recommend Fitness For Every Body highly enough. Jane and the rest of the staff are so friendly and professional and the personal attention is second to none. I had never tried power plate training (or yogavibes) before but the trainers were so fantastic that I felt at ease the whole time. I will definitely be going back.
I went to this gym for 3 years and a half, which shows that I liked it quite a bit. Unfortunately, I had to stop my membership as my workplace location changed and it was not suitable anymore.
The best thing of this gym is its great location, right on top of Fulham Broadway tube station, so you can just pop in on you way home from work, and you actually feel bad when you don't as you just pass by the stairs to get you to it. So that encourages you to go more often.
Now, let's start by the entrance which is the reception. This is probably the worst part of the gym, as the receptionists are not friendly, they behave as if they are doing you a favour when they answer to your questions or give our the classes timetable. And it can get a bit slow to enter when a few people try to get in at the same time, which can be frustrating if you are running late for a class.
Then there is a nice bar/restaurant area with free wifi (and plugs for the laptops :)
The changing rooms are ok, a bit narrow if anything, and quite basic but ok.
Off the changing rooms there is the swimming-pool, which is a great one. It is not too busy and the lighting sets a good mood. Also, it has big windows overlooking Fulham Broadway, so that makes a really nice difference when it is sunny and the sun comes through while swimming. You can't get that in many swimming-pools in London!
Upstairs is the actual fitness area, with all the class studios (except for the yoga studio, which is located off the restaurant) and the machines areas. There is a separate ladies machines area, which some girls prefer.
There are 3 studios in total, a yoga one, the spinning one and the one for the rest of the classes. The classes didn't use to be varied enough but that may have changed. The class instructors used to be overall very good.
The machines area is big with loads of machines for each to use. And again, like the swimming-pool, one of the walls is just glass overlooking Fulham Broadway, so it makes the place look more spacious.
I would say that this is the best feature of this gym, there is glass everywhere, which makes you feel part of the environment where it is located while exercising.
Finally, the gym also has a creche.
The trainer who took the lesson was extremely experienced and patient as we were a beginners class. I was surprised how small the classes were which meant you got real 1 on 1 attention. Amazing value for money!
The most pleasurable Power Plate and YogaVibe Sessions I had so far!
It is incredible how effective is the Power Plate workout - I can see the difference from the first class!
The staff is brilliant - professional and friendly.
Combination of yoga and Power Plate is unique indeed - will deeply stretch and strengthen your muscles within the first session. I just love it!
Cannot wait for my next class!!!!
Great yoga experience. It really helped me reduce my overall pain. I feel great now! I was surprised at how simple the techniques are. And it's also fun!
Marina is a blessing in our lives. Her healing energy combined with knowledge and compassion makes her an amazing teacher and healer. She has helped my husband and me to regain balance in our lives after a very stressful time dealing with health issues. I can't thank Marina enough for all she has done. The best I can do is refer others to her and hope they will discover what we were able to find.... that balance and healing can be achieved in a joyful manner when a consistent commitment is made with the desire to improve one's well being.
Pure is the most beautiful yoga facility I have been to in NY or anywhere. It is well-designed, clean, spacious, quiet- just gorgeous. The instructors are not the best in the city but they are better than the average yoga instructor at one of the big gym chains. If I lived uptown, I would belong to Pure.
I must preface this with the caveat that I am truly a beginner at Yoga (I have gone less than 10 total times in my life), so I signed up for a Level 1 class at YogaWorks near Union Square - and I must say that it was fantastic. The best yoga class both in the sense of getting a great understanding of the poses and movements, but also in terms of the pace, the instruction, the environment, the workout and the instructors themselves. I am really looking forward to my next class.
The instructor (Chrissy Carter), was just fantastic. Patient, explained things well and engaged with students before & after the class with tips, and answered questions as well. Today's class was focused on balance and the feet. A very cool quote she weaved (wove?) into the class was: "Balance is falling in all directions simultaneously", which I found to be useful and interesting. (I guess as contrasted with 'Balance' being still, and standing in one place). By the end of the class, my awareness of my posture, balance and body was significantly improved, and I felt like i got a great workout in terms of stretching and lengthening.
Anyway, a few tips: you might miss the entrance as its a discreet entranceway right next to Aveda store (in the Gallery tab above, you can see outside images of the entrance). You need to buzz 401, and then take an elevator to the 4th floor. The studio is bright, airy and cheerful.
A few more highlights below.
- Lovely hardwood floors
- Perfect temperature, even on a warm day it was perfectly cool & comfortable
- Amazing teachers
- Welcoming staff at the front desk
- Free use of mat on the first visit ($2 each time for future usage)
- Complimentary Water
- Small changing rooms (like you have in a department store with a shower curtain type mechanism)
****Great Ayurvedic Doctor in New York City, The Real Deal trained in India! ****
I wish I had met ayurvedic doctor, Dr. Reetu Rudra, 18 months ago, shortly after I turned 50 and just wasn't feeling myself. For 18 months, I had spent so much time and money going from one medical doctor in NYC to another, getting nowhere. Although I knew and was so thankful to be "healthy" on paper, I was low on energy, not sleeping well, was anxious and had various symptoms that couldn't be attributed to anything "medical" according to the MDs in New York City.
Over the years I had heard about Ayurvedic medicine, the ancient medicine practiced in India for over 6000 years.
I understood that Ayurvedic medicine probably held many answers, given the wisdom intrinsic in a 6000 year-old science.
Then a friend told me he was working with a wonderful Ayurvedic doctor trained in India.
Of late, he was looking so much better and full of energy, so I wanted to see this doctor!
He told me about her academic accomplishments -- that she had graduated at the top of her ayurvedic class, then became a naturopath and spent a year working in a hospital, that she had an Ayurvedic center in London before coming to NY -- and that she was devoted to the art of healing with natural means.
Dr. Rudra immediately understood the issues I was dealing with, and knew how to help right away.
She explained that I was in a state of imbalance called by too much "Vata" and gave me three things I could do to immediately start feeling better:
1) Based on my ayurvedic body type, she told me how to adjust my diet and which foods to eat at specific times of day -- she said this was 50% of the problem
2) She taught me a specific type of yogic breathing exercise called pranayama that would bring vitality and energy into all my organs, and
3) She gave me specific herbal supplements and herbal medicines that would restore balance over a period of a few months.
I was so excited!! Finally a doctor had understood my complaints and gave me the tools to help myself.
Immediately I changed the foods I ate, began pranayama and meditation in the morning, and started Triphala and other herbal medicines to restore balance.
I began to feel better!
Because I have a "vata-imbalance" which happens to many people after age 50, Dr. Rudra suggested that I go through a detoxification called "Panchkarma".
My panchkarma has involved a series of medical massages -- using a variety of herbal-medicine oils rubbed into specific areas of the body-- as well as some herbal home treatments.
Also Dr. Rudra, who is a yoga teacher as well and lifelong practitioner of the ayurvedic lifestyle, have given me various yoga exercises to also help my condition.
What I like so much about Dr. Rudra and her NYC clinic is her common sense approach to natural healing. I've always believed that the body can heal if given the correct support and treatments. I've always believed herbs were much more healing than pharmaceutical medicines because of their subtle qualities.
There's still so much to learn about the science and art of Ayurveda -- so much common sense, everyday practices and guidelines for living a holistic and peaceful lifestyle.
Every step of the way, Dr. Rudra has been there to answer my questions and facilitate healing.
One final word: do not be fooled when you meet Dr. Rudra, for she is young and unassuming. But she is an old soul with a deep gift for healing and has a heart overflowing with compassion and good humor. This young woman, with high academic honors and a life devoted to the art of healing, has travelled very far from her home in India -- to bring ayurvedic healing and wisdom to those of us in NY City. She puts all the older gray haired medical doctors I've met with to shame, for she knows how to heal imbalances that these men do not even come close to understanding. For ayurveda is 6000 years full of wisdom, and the medicine practiced by western doctors is less than 300 years old. Now that you know about Ayurvedic medicine and Dr. Rudra, it should be obvious where true healing can be found in New York.
I worked as a yoga teacher here when it first opened for just over a year. I don't have much experience of the fitness facilities or staff but can highly recommend the yoga studio which was lovely to work in. They made a real effort to create a condusive atmosphere with soft lighting, wooden floor and a great Buddha statue. The acoustics in the room where fantastic - people used to ask me if I had done something mysterious to my voice as they felt so relaxed afterwards! I only left because I was able to start my own classes in Hoylake which is closer to home (in fact I now teach at Hoylake Community Centre only a couple of hundred yards from my front door!)
Beautiful facility but the yoga left a lot to be desired. To be fair, I have heard that their proprietary class gets good comments.
I used to find it hard to get into a regular exercise routine, but when I discovered Tri Yoga, the calming and down to earth experience of the yoga centre has kept me coming back for over 4 years.
If you are looking for a retreat that is great value for money in beautiful, picturesque, tranquil surroundings then I would highly recommend Lake Isle Retreats. The retreat is held on the island of Inis Rath, the ideal location for a weekend to rejuvenate oneself. It was well organized and every effort was made to ensure everyone was getting the most out of the retreat and enjoying themselves. Guided Yoga classes, medidation and hikes were all part of the retreat with holistic treatments offered at an additional cost. All the food was also included in the cost and the food was absolutely superb. The retreat is run by Tim and his wife Champa who made everyone feel right at home as soon as everyone arrived. Like myself, most other attendees were there on their own also and by the end of the weekend, everyone was great friends. I came home feeling totally relaxed, rejuvenated and 100% ready to face the world again. I'll definitely be going back.
This has the most stunning session and is really a totally lovely place. You need to be keen on the idea of ayurveda as the entire spa is run on its principles. Generally you see an ayurvedic doctor and your treatment plan comes out of that (although you can add on beauty treatments which are excellent).
The food is beyond fabulous - generally three or more courses but so perfectly balanced that you don't put on weight. You can even do a workshop with the chef to learn how to cook ayurveda-style at home.
Yoga is obviously a strong part of the ethos and classes are good (though not all teachers spoke English and so you might be a little limited in your choice of class if you're new and need instruction).
The pool is beautiful, so serene and the surroundings are stunning too. It's set amongst vineyards and you can walk up fromthe hotel through these or down into town and along the river - there is even a small icon museum in town.
Be warned. As you detox (no coffee or alcohol) you may get a stinking headache (but the staff will take pity and give you something for it if it gets really bad).
The massage treatments are fabulous - many are given 'four=handed'. Be aware that you will usually strip right off for these as a lot of oil is involved. Germans don't hold with undue modesty so you just get on with it! Therapists are lovely and you feel seriously cocooned and cossetted (but these aren't purely fancy 'rituals' - they have profound results).
Lectures and workshops are also included so you learn the theory behind ayurveda.
Just lovely....writing about it makes me feel a serious yearning to go again!
Nearly forgot. Downsides? Not many really. I did find the decor less inspiring than I'd hope, both in bedrooms and in downstairs areas such as lobby, restaurant etc.
I attend classes at Yoga Garden on Divisadero in San Francisco because my favorite teacher, Arkady, holds classes there.
Yoga Garden is an unconventional yoga studio---it is a typical SF Victorian house turned into a yoga space. There are three studios in the house and I particularly like the one on the 2nd level. The ambiance is a very warm and welcoming space to practice Yoga. I have never tried classes by other teachers, but hear they are great. It is a clean space and i will continue to visit Yoga Garden as long as Arkady is teaching there.
Also, they offer great deals for new students and students who want to purchase monthly packages. The staff is very knowledgable and kind.
I visited the James Howell Studio recently for the first time -- and will continue to visit the studio -- because my favorite yoga teacher, Arkady, teaches there. The space is beautiful and open. You are enveloped in exposed brick creating a very urban, yet warm feel to the open studio. It is also very private. The class following the 8 AM Saturday morning class Arkady teaches is never interrupted by distraction of a busy lobby, or noise from the street. It is a small oasis. Many different classes are offered at James Howell, not just Yoga.
I was really curious and excited about taking my first class at the newly-opened PeaceBank Yoga Studio in Redwood City ... not only because the studio is gorgeous with its dark hardwood floors and beautifully engraved "yoga" window (which looks out onto the yoga boutique chock full of goodies), but also because it seemed like great yoga had finally come to Redwood City! It gets tiresome driving the 20 minutes or so to take yoga at all the wonderful studios in the Palo Alto area, and I was keeping my fingers crossed that I could finally start a meaningful yoga practice just five minutes from home...
I decided to try the "Restorative Flow" Yoga class, because it seemed like it would be a good introduction to the studio and I am not ready yet for the Power or Hot Yoga classes. I have never taken a Restorative class, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was a late evening class with about half a dozen people; a really relaxing atmosphere. The studio was warmer than what I am used to, but after awhile I actually liked it, especially as I started to notice that I could sink deeper into my poses. Michelle, the instructor, led us through a quick series of flow movements, and if you have never taken a yoga class, this might be too fast. But she also emphasized time and again to do as much as you can and gave options on how to adjust the pose if it was too difficult. No pressure at all. The only thing I wish there was more of would be an anatomical guide of how to position one's body in certain poses, as I tend to forget about my tailbone and such in the Warrior Pose, etc. and like to be reminded ...
Just as I was thinking that I must have misread the schedule and was taking a fast flow class, we hit the halfway mark and it was time for the restorative bit of the class, which was great. We sat in a number of restorative poses with bolsters and other props for long periods of time. At first I wasn't sure how I was going to like it, but it was heaven. It was nice to unwind after the fast-moving flow poses and my body kept whispering "thank you"; somehow I felt like I was getting a really good massage. One of my favorite poses was lying sideways onto a bolster with my legs bent under me, as it really opened up my hips and gave a good, yummy, cat-like stretch. It was so relaxing (in an active way) that I felt my body sink and sigh into happiness, and I even thought about trying to sleep in that pose for a full eight-hours.
It was a lovely juxtaposition, going from flow to the restorative poses, and Michelle was perfect in leading us from one to another. I liked the music she used as well (though some said it was a bit distracting for them).
I really look forward to taking more classes at my new "home studio", especially as I purchased a new student 30-day package for $40, which is a real treat. Yippee! Unfortunately I think that that deal has ended, but it's really motivating me to try out all that PeaceBank has to offer. A great first impression and definitely recommended!
Even though I knew that California Yoga Center existed in the Bay Area, I didn't think about checking out the Center's yoga classes until I read an article about one of its teachers in a Yoga Journal article. It talks about how Elise Miller is the first person to create a yoga asana program designed specifically for scoliosis, which I have. Considering that my only scoliosis treatment used to be random periods of physical therapy, and swimming and ballet classes as a kid, I was intrigued to see how yoga, which I love practicing, could help me with the condition, especially as I get older.
The class was great and I could tell that Elise knows what she is talking about. I liked how she explained the reasoning behind the moves ... But more importantly, I appreciated that she has a DVD and pamphlet for sale called "Yoga for Scoliosis", especially since I was not living permanently in the area and wanted to continue practicing these moves.
It's great to know that there is a Yoga for Scoliosis program out there, which is just another reminder of how much yoga can help us with our various physical ailments and challenges.
As gyms go, Body Works West is a sanctuary. Upon entry, there are aromatherapy candles burning and a bright and light atmosphere. There is a host of different offerings from pilates (extra cost) to boxing circuits to yoga, plus one free personal training session a month. The facilities are state-of-the-art and the staff are friendly and helpful. There is also a pool and a sauna and lovely dressing rooms with nice products and amenities. I have never been so positive about going to a gym!
Mii amo is in a tremendous location in Boynton Canyon in Sedona. The facilities are spectacular and the therapists are the best I've experienced. I loved the indoor and outdoor pools, and stargazing from the outdoor whirlpool at night. The food at Mii amo is delicious, especially the blue corn waffles and smoothies in the morning, and then the filet and beet salad for dinner -- dessert was incredible, I could eat the trio of chocolates every night. I couldn't believe that you get two spa treatments per day, what an amazing deal and I experienced true bliss. The red rock hikes and cooking demonstrations were my favorite activities. And I love that they use Eminence products -- my favorite!
The Avalon studio is a high-level yoga studio, with a very comfortable, relaxing ambience. It's very clean and there are a variety of classes to choose from -- both in terms of types of yoga and class times offered.
I participated in the six-month, 200-hour yoga teacher training program. I liked it very much until my yoga "mentor" crossed the line, violating my trust and not espousing the true yoga sutras that he preached, which was very disappointing. I have not been back since then. I don't hold anything against the other teachers, who are great, and I got what I needed from the teacher training program, but unfortunately the circumstance with the yoga "mentor" ruined my view of Avalon. I would like to return, but not for a while.
After closing down for a couple of weeks, LA Fitness Northwood is back, and what a makeover! Gone are the dingy carpets and old lockers, gone the tiny sauna and steam room. A brand new spa area near the pool has been opened, and it's a whole different after-workout relaxation half an hour. Unless you happen to pop in the jacuzzi when there's a children swimming lesson a inch away from you, like I did. Easily avoidable by looking at the timetables: highly recommended practice!
I highly suggest anybody looking for yoga lessons in the area to enquire about which instructor is teaching and when. The two instructors I came across have two very different styles, and are catering to already formed classes of ladies (and the odd gent). I had some trouble adjucting to the morning yoga routine after months spent in the evening class.
Definetly thumbs up to the management for finally equipping the gym with a stretching area, a separate free-weight room and a spinning room. No more sweat drops near my yoga mat!
great place. very well done. ambiance is spot on and the instructor was very helpful. complimentary first class is a great touch. will definitely go back again.
My husband joins me in attesting to the importance of having Charym in our community and spiritual world.
Maureen is amazing teacher and the entire staff is so near at hand. We consider Charym a great resource for us, and for everyone here in the Litchfield area.
This is a great Yoga place... especially for Prenatal Yoga. Jacquie's Saturday class is a special treat for every pregnant woman!
I became a big fan of YogaWorks when I temporarily moved to the Upper East Side and found that the Eastside studio was just a couple blocks from my apartment. They had a special deal for new students to take a number of yoga classes at a great price, so I dropped in whenever I had the chance, and wish I could have taken more. And the staff was very responsive and helpful, calling me back quickly when I had a question.
I mostly took the signature YogaWorks classes, which suited me perfectly as I had not yet found which style I preferred. All the teachers were excellent instructors, and I always left class feeling refreshed and satisfied, eager to come back the next day. My only issue is that the studio was so popular that the Asana rooms always felt a bit cramped.
I am a keen Life Centre "yogi" - excellent teachers plus offer a wide range of classes, has something for the absolute beginner to the more advanced Hatha/Ashtanga yogi. The only downside is that popular classes get extremely crowded and it seems that they do not limit the number of people that can attend a class. Pressure has come off a little since TLC opened a second studio in the loft (although its too small!). Also offer some great massages / reflexology / homeopathy etc.
A MUST "one stop shop" for any mum-to-be; Tara Lee (famour for her pre natal yoga DVD) teaches the BEST ever pre natal yoga class, there are also some fun mummy and baby classes, baby massage etc. Recently also started activities for children/families which look fun, although I have not tried these yet (ex. cooking class for under 5's, painting etc).
Prefer TLC to for ex. Triyoga and some of the other larger yoga centres in central London, but again I guess the downside of this more intimate atmosphere is that it can sometimes become a little crowded. No longer the hidden gem of London for yogis but definitely a GEM! No membership required. Would be fun if they could open a cafe like Triyoga in Primrose Hill, but again I presume they are limited due to space.
I have been to a lot of spas all around the world and honestly Talise is in the Top 3 of all time. Amazing facilities with private villa treatment rooms, waterways and tropical gardens. You feel like you are in your own personal spa wonderland. Not just a room in a building. The staff are very freindly and professional. Therapists where excellent. I felt like royalty and will be spending a lot of time there on our next visit.
We went to the Standard as a mini break to escape the cold temperatures but mostly to check out the spa. Walking into the hotel you feel as if you have warped back into the seventies, which is actually refreshing given all the beauties by the pool (someone for everyone I promise). The spa is very up-to-date with a cool mani/pedi room and amazing wooden hallway leading to the Hamam. On the first day I had a Rub and Scrub where I laid on the hot stone of the Hamam and was scrubed and massaged by a massage therapist and then took a milk and honey bath. If I had any misgivings about bathing and lounging in this kind of environment just walking into the Hamam makes you want to stay forever. I also had the Hurt So Good which had been recommended by a friend and was well worth it. The yoga was disappointing as it promised mediation but maybe that just means I am bad at meditation. Finally, the staff can range from extremely helpful and knowledgeable to extreme dingbats. Don't let that put you off, the Hamam alone is worth the trip.
The most amazing Hawaii trip my family has done! Very good attention to detail!
I left LeSport, after a week’s detox, thinking that this was the best I remember feeling – ever. Which is wonderful, and also a little terrifying, because when one knows what feeling "amazing" is like, how can you ever go back to "fine"?
A bespoke programme was put together for me by Dr Abishek Jain, who is the spa manager at LeSport. He’s a doctor, and an Ayurvedic practitioner, and I wish he was based in London, not St Lucia.
Before I went, I emailed Dr Jain a rough breakdown of my current state of health. Basically, felt very stressed, had an addiction to caffeine, insomnia (not surprising), mood swings, and wasn’t getting much from my workouts or my diet. I felt I was firing on only one cylinder, and turning into an automaton. I work in a creative industry, but found I didn’t have any…
Every day of my seven-day stay was packed with treatments and therapies, from Iridology and nutrition consultations, to reiki, one-on-one yoga sessions, MLD, tai chi, and treatments such as udwarthana, shirodhara and body wraps.
Everything was tailored to my needs, by Dr Jain, and some where tweaked and adapted as the week went on, and he got to know my body, and mind, better. The standard of treatments is super-high, and the therapists knowledgeable, and incredibly friendly.
Dr Jain’s attitude to detoxing is surprisingly relaxed. Nothing was banned, or forbidden. He said it would ‘be better’ if I could go without coffee, for example, but that it shouldn’t feel like a chore or painful. And because nothing was forbidden, I found I could go without – and did. Which was nothing short of a miracle, actually.
I had one day of feeling terrible, but thereafter, and thanks to two sessions of MLD, I began to feel better than I ever thought possible. I was energised, found I was getting up a full hour earlier, my skin looked amazing (still does), and I lost 5lbs without even trying (in fact, I am pretty sure I ate more at LeSport than I do at home).
I can’t recommend it enough. I’ve traveled extensively, and visited dozens of spas across the globe, and while this isn’t the most polished, or luxe, it is for me, thus far, the best I've visited in terms of effectiveness.
If you like to travel alone, as I do, then you can choose to enjoy total solitude, or join in with a raft of activities, from morning walks and yoga sessions, to more sporty pursuits such as watersports, and hiking.
The number of people who visit LeSport only once is few, and I can see why. I flew with Thomas Cook Signature, who I’d also totally recommend as they know their stuff, spa-wise…
I suppose you can tell how good a spa is by how you feel three weeks or so after the event, and I am happy to report that I’m still off the coffee, the white wine, eating better, getting more from my workouts, and have got my creativity back, to boot… and oh, still haven’t gained a pound.
Whenever I spend a couple days in Zagreb, I try to fit in a yoga class at Nava. Since my schedule varies, I find myself taking classes from different teachers in different styles, and I have always left class a happy and satisfied yogi! Nava's been able to attract a phenomenal cast of international yoga teachers, including Seane Corn, while my favorite was Lea Lalitha from Norway, who I hope will visit again. The studio has a great vibe, a dedicated group of yoga students, is friendly to newcomers and is always offering some new programs. It's definitely the best yoga studio in Croatia and on par with some of the top yoga centers I've frequented in Silicon Valley, Washington DC and New York!
i have only been a few times as i live east, but every single one of my friends who lives west SWEARS by this yoga place. And most of them seem to worship Durga, apparently an amazing teacher and inspiration to all. I did go on a jivamukti holiday in turkey last year, and it was definitely one of the best holidays in terms of wellbeing and peacefulness that i have ever been on.
Im not a yoga freak, but love it when i do it. The downside about this place is that you are often surrounded by real pros, and can feel a bit left out of the crowd. But the upside is that the yoga itself is fantastic, the teachers are very good, and if you have the time and energy to go often, they give you more and more of their time. If you live East, i would say it's a fantastic place to know.
