Jivamukti Yoga

Seek the brightest enlightenment. Jivamukti yoga is one of nine internationally recognised forms of yoga. It has western origins, but places special emphasis on the the spiritual and intellectual elements of yoga, which are more often neglected by western practitioners.

How does it work?

Fill your lungs and get ready to sing. The five principles of Jivamukti are:

• scripture,
• devotion (Bhakti),
• prayer,
• music and
• meditation.

These are practiced through group chanting, uplifting music, scriptural teachings and flowing asanas (body poses) to create a meditative state, with the aim of giving you a physical and emotional leg-up to a higher state of spirituality.

The classes are usually between 60 and 90 minutes long, to give time to incorporate the different elements of spiritual, intellectual and physical practice. Jivamukti is often listed as open to all abilities, but it’s worth bearing in mind that some of the poses used are more vigorously physical with one move flowing into the next often quite quickly and an emphasis on constant variety to keep the interest and creativity flowing.

Make sure you wear comfortable, flexible clothing and take a bottle of water, because although one of the aims of Jivamukti is to reach a state of deep relaxation and enlightenment, it doesn’t mean you won’t get sweaty on the way there.
