As a couple who booked for a Valentine's treat, it was disappointing to have staff switching on main lights in the restaurant and using cleaning spray on the tables and setting the breakfast plates for the next day when finishing our meal (it was only 10.15). The hotel didn't have many guests staying that weekend so staff just didn't make the effort. It was like "okay we only have a few guests, why bother" Afterwards, we would have liked to have had a drink at the bar, but it remained empty with guests preferring the room with the open fire because it was warmer and nicely lit. The only problem was that only 4 couples could sit in the lobby due to lack of seating, even though the room could adequately seat 40 people. We stood near the fire to finish our drinks then retired to our room at 10.30.

The next day, my partner and I would have liked to take advantage of the 12 o.clock check out and late breakfast service on offer by sleeping in late, but as they didn’t stick to dinner service time we thought we’d better have breakfast earlier, just in case. Glad we did, as they didn’t refill the buffet after 9.30am. Even though service times were 7.30 to 10.30am Weekends. Breakfast lovely though.

• The room was clean and roomie and bathroom and shower all nice.
• The bed was hard and lumpy
• Despite opening a window because the room was stuffy and hot our noses blocked up and eyes were stinging as the room and corridors smelt sooty from what we assumed came from the open-fire in the lobby (even though our room was no where near the lobby).

We didn't bother reporting the problems because it was just the overall atmosphere of the place. I booked this overnight stay as it was advertised as a Spa hotel, great for weekend breaks and romantic getaways. It was also described as an Edwardian Manor full of character, but the only thing Edwardian about it was the front facade and the lobby, the rest just looked new build and lacked any Edwardian features. With all the ugly modern Mercure signs dotted about looked out of place and ugly concrete 70's spiral stairs within the building were unsympathetic to the character of the building. Considering the main entrance and driveway is to the side of the building you don't even get the impression of anything Edwardian on arrival, not until you take a walk around. I feel it should just be marketed for business conferences and wedding functions only, as I feel people who go to experience the spa as I did and for the charm of a grade listed building will feel kind under sold and cheated (as I did).
