Hyperpigmentation on the upper lip can be caused as a result of disturbed liver/spleen function and can point to an excess of fruit/sugar/drugs/alcohol/chemicals (including medication such as the oral contraceptive, antibiotics, etc.). So, while you can do topical things to cover it up such as other answers have suggested, you really need to look at your diet, water consumption and check possible nutritional deficiencies and any medication you are on.

Great advice! And what about age-related liver spots, many women complain that there's no solution.... would a detox help, albeit to boost the whole body?

Pigmentation is a natural response to UV exposure, hormonal imbalance through pregnancy or use of the pill, injury or inflammation to the skin and most recently proven to be associated with heat exposure to the skin ( hot environments such as kitchens, facial waxing etc) and possibly triggered by sunlight entering the eye!! Always wear UV rated sunglasses.

Once a melanin cell has been triggered to produce darker pigment you need to use products to interrupt its reproduction. These products must contain a Tyrosinase inhibitor: Kojic Acid, Arbutin (Bearberry Extract), Licorice Extract, Mulberry Extract, Scutellaria, Burner Root Extract inactivate Tyrosinase ( the enzyme responsible for skin darkening). The use of skin serums containing these ingredients is recommended.
Secondly you have to stop the stimulation by always wearing a UVA / UVB sunscreen - SPF 30 is recommended.
Remember its DAYLIGHT and not just sunshine that stimulates the pigment - so that means sunscreen even if you work indoors as the daylight through your window and windscreen will stimulate the pigment.

Treatments such as microdermabrasion or melanin busting facial peels are recommended too.

Skinceuticals and Image make excellent products and in-clinic treatments to treat pigmentation.

Image Skin Bleaching Serum contains 2% Hydroquinone plus other Tyrosinase inhibitors, they also make Skin Lightening Serum which can be used during pregnancy for melasma (mask of pregnancy).
Image also offer pigment busting skin peels to lift out the pigment which don't require much downtime at all - Vitamin C, Lactic acid and Kojic Acid - they're safe for ethnic skins too.

Skinceuticals make Phyto+ and Pigment regulator and a new in-clinic Pigment Regulating Skin peel - again safe for all skin colours and for use where acne is still active and again minimal downtime.

Darkening of the skin, called hyperpigmentation, can occur because of age, sun exposure, or because of hormone fluctuations. The best defence is to avoid tanning and over exposure to the sun, and to wear high protection sunscreen factor.
Visiting a local GP or a dermatologist will be able to advise you further.

Many women suffer or complain of uneven skintones. The discoloration is the likely result of hyperpigmentation (caused by the sun) or melasma (a disorder brought on by hormonal changes).

SLATHER on a broad-spectrum sunscreen dailey. A sunblock that shields you from both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of at least 30 can halt the overproduction of melanin. (Do NOT skip over your mouth or lip areas, as most people do!) Next, you can ask your doctor about applying an RX hydroquinone product, such as Tri-Luma Cream. Still, you can try OTC options that contain kojic and fruit acids or vitamin C. Another option to consider is chemical peels or microdermabrasion. Getting either treatment once a month can even out your skin tone by sloughing dead, discolored cells.

If OTC and RX creams and peels are'nt lightening the dark areas after 2 months, consult your dermatologist. The derm may suggest getting a treatment, like intense pulse light or Fraxel II to help to significantly reduce the hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation can be a result of many different conditions so to narrow it down and find the root cause will need the help of an Integrative or Functional Medicine Doctor but in the meantime get your adrenals tested, as well as trying an elimination diet...specifically gluten. This is an internal problem and although topical suggestions are worthy of examining the best way to treat this condition is at the root cause. I wish you all the best, if you need an individual consulation, please advise me.

Use high sunprotection every day to prevent further damage.
As a treatment choice you may consider using Obagi Nu-Derm System products (it may take you from 6 to 8 weeks ,depending on depth of pigmentation to clear, followed by Obagi blue peel, or IPL, Dermaroller as other options.

The reply you have from someone mentioning Dr Obagi products, I don't know who uses them but they are fantastic and if you can find a salon with these products then I would go there and get some advice. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels can tone down the colour but would not clear it completely like Dr Obagi products, I went to one of his seminars in London back in July and they are very impressive. Always use a sun factor as others recommend.
