I'd like to get highlights over the summer but currently get a full head of bleach blonde. Do I have to put up with dark roots for a while in order to change to highlights instead?

The best thing for you to do. Is to do full foil with a darker color. It can be with a perminate color or with a Demi permanate color. There are a few options as to the actual color you would like to chose you could even try a few shades so you have medium, dark and light colors there.

If your hair is now solid blonde you can do one of two things.
Lowlight your head with different tones of darker blonde or wait till you have a couple of inches of grow out and have the roots touched up and just let the hair grow in that way..
The first option is lots easier.

Of course not! Just get lowlights laced into your blonde, and use your bleach blonde as the hightlight!. Just make sure to not pick too dark of a color for your lowlights, or you'll look zebra stripy. if you're super blonde, a level 8 would probably be as dark as i would go with a lowlight.

One of your options you can do is a full head of lowlights. As. Your hair grows out and you get your touch-ups you can get both colors done. I would recommend using demi-permanent color for the lowlights it will cause less damage on the hair.

I agree with the low lights using several shades lighter than desired low lights; a semi or demi permant color (ie: redken shades eq. color which can be deluted with clear) and do a few colors of low lights.for blending and dimention. . Then depending on how much roots you have you can put in just a few highlights on regrowth to blend it all in. Depends how much regrowth you have......

No not at all. Color is always correctable! You have several options. You can add lowlights or an all over color, but keep out the pieces you want as highlighs. You never have to settle or put up with color you don't want.

I guess what I would suggest, since I am hearing with what you are saying: "You'd like to get highlights," Right? I am assuming that you are just not liking seeing the "dark" at your scalp/outgrowth area - Is that correct?
Well, what I tell my clients is this - I would do highlights JUST ON YOUR OUTGROWTH ONLY (where the dark is) the reason being, is because I do not want to OVERPROCESS the bleached/already blonde hair tha tis on your ends. If I do 2 foils of the blonde to 1 foil of a darker or medium warm or golden brown from roots to ends, this will (fill) the ends (the bleached blonde) and make your hair look 50 - 75% healthy looking, plus it will make you OUTGROWTH line look less noticeable as time goes by.
Depending on how blonde you want/need to be, is how I would decide if I would do 2 blonde to 1 dark foils or if you do not mind having a little bit more contrast in there (which will look so much more natural) plus you will have an easier time growing it out, less cost to you - because you will have longer time inbetween your foil retouches - then I would do 2 dark or medium foils to 1 blonde foil (the blonde - ONLY being at the OUTGROWTH) NOT to be run through the ends!!! Hope this helps!
