Have you tried Chi. I see the comments under me aboug organic, I have not used it, so that might be good for you. however, if not, try Chi, it has no ammonia, is hyper-allergenic, and the quality is excellent. I've had clients who normally get irritated, but those reactions are reduced with Chi

Most people who have reactions to haircolor are allergic to ammonia and there are many hair color options popping up that are ammonia free. I have found the best professional color line out there in Organic Color Systems (OCS). The pigments come from vegetables and minerals, and they are suspended in organic plant oils. There still is PPD in OCS, but a very small ammount. The ph adjuster in OCS is called Ethenalomine and is derived from coconut. The processing is a bit different, as we use heat (sit under the drier) to help open the hair cuticle, which is much gentler than ammonia. I have been working with OCS for 3 years now and in my opinion, it is truly the very best hair color line out there. Everyone who has come to me with "haircolor allergies" has had no problem with OCS. In fact, my clients tell me their hair is healthier, smoother and in much better condition than before coloring with OCS, even highlights. I would recommend you find a salon near you that uses OCS, and stop in for a "patch test." The stylist will put a tiny dot behind your ear and you will leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash off. Wait 24 hours. If there is no reaction, you're good to go! Call and make an appointment!

Coming from a colorist...I am sort of bias. With that being said. Organic is nice but by any chance have you tried professional Demi or Semi Permanent, or even direct dyes. These simply deposit only (coat the hair shaft) and are great for gray coverage. You really should be careful with organic and vegetable dyes because of the residue that remains on your hair and interferes with possible growth. I know its hard to believe since everywhere you look on the internet it says Go green but that is not always safe for your hair in the long run. I personally do not use Permanent on clients unless they are lifting but know that if you are coloring your own hair with box color there are way too many issues with that alone. If you do DIY ask a make friends with someone in the industry and have them grab you the good stuff! If someone else is taking care of your hair please ask them to do a scalp analysis to determine what will work best on you scalp

I'm been hairdresser for 8 years in Wilmington, NC and also did hair in DeKalb, IL I've heard that if you put a packet of sweet and low in your color it will take the reaction away. Now, if your not sure if you want to use your scalp for this right away, mix it up and do a patch test either behind your ear or in the bend of your arm. They say wait 24 to 48 hrs to see if you have a reaction, but most of the time if u, do it happens right away. I hope this help and if you have any other questions please ask... good luck

There are two other products that are all natural. Herbatint and Water Works, Give them a try but you may still want to perform a patch test to ensure there is nothing in it that will affect you. Good luck!

I have been a hairstylist for over 10 years now. I would also recommend that you find a salon that uses Organic Colour Systems and have them do a Patch Test First. Organic Colour Systems has no ammonia and the lowest amount of PPD in any color line. Chi could be the next best thing, that is if you still have a reaction to the other colorline. Chi also has no ammonia. Aveda has higher levels of PBA and contains ammonia and products without PPD may actually be more dangerous due to the high concentration of metals, leads and mercury.
I hope this helps!

I own a salon and spa and I started using organic color and curl systems about a year ago. The stuff is amazing. We also offer Aveda color and perms. I have moved almost all of my clients into the organic color and perms. I use to end my day with a headache and thank God no more. Can't imagine working in a chemical smelling salon ever again!!!!.

Well, Goldwell haircolor, has taken out, the major things, that irritate. If, you are allergic to peroxide, or ammonia, then, it would be, even more difficult, but not immposible. If, it's just ammonia, then, a demi-permanate,haircolor, would be the answer.

I too agree, the organic color system is great for those who have allergies..If it is just itching after a color process I add 2 packetts of sweet and low to my colors..Just mix it in with the color and apply...it really works good for those who burn or itch after color treatment...

Organic Hair Systems many people find easier to use. Do you know what you are allergic to? I have had clients that were allergic to the pigment. If that is the case there isn't much you can do. Have many clients who have reaction with traditional color as they are reacting to the ammonia in the color but are not really allergic to it. it can sometimes look like an allergic reaction. As always it is best to do a patch test if you have had reactions.

Have your stylist foil your color! It never touches your scalp and you get a long lasting color!

I actually have the same problem. I just started developing the allergy about 8 months ago and it drives me crazy! I always love to try new colors and trends and you are alot more limited when you can't use permanent color. I have been using demi and semi permanent colors since my allergy began and it they seem to work great so far. I really like wella color touch if you can find anyone who uses it. I have alot of gray and It works well for gray coverage if used under heat but you are limited in your color choices. You have to stay with your natural level or darker. I use the semi permanent as my all over color and usually foil in some color to add demension so it doesn't have a 'flat' look. the foils keep the color off your scalp and you can do alot with foils so you still get color results you want. Redken shades EQ also work well but I have noticed the gray doesn't seem to stay covered quite as well. I think it's because it is in a liquid gel form so it can't saturate as well. Wella Color Touch line is a thick cream so it clings to the hair better.
