Just wondering if there are certain foods that, when eaten regularly, can build up tolerance to pain over time (have heard that coffee does this - looking for healthier alternative!)

Hi Angharad,
You could also try nuts and seeds if you are not allergic to them and flaxseed. Foods rich in magnesium are natural muscle relaxants and should ease the discomfort.

Hi Angharad,
What kind of pain (where) and why would you want to build up a tolerance, rather than addressing the pain? I would need to know more.

Pain is inflammation and so treating pain through anti-inflammatory agents is probably more effective than just numbing pain. Fruits and vegetables and herbs that contain antioxidants therefore are going to assist the body to control inflammation. Foods to avoid include flour, sugar, and all refined foods.

I'm not an expert on this but have been talking to a close friend of mine who has ME
She says that by improving her eating habits cutting out a lot of processed food has made a difference to her pain and also drinking plenty of water, as a result her energy levels has slightly increased (not a lot, but enough for her to notice).
You need to be careful with caffeine as if you also suffer with IBS which is quite common for ME sufferers it could irritate it further, depending on what tolerances trigger it. (again this is something my friend has told me about).

Thank you! Very interesting to hear. I've actually found the opposite - cutting out certain foods has restored my energy levels almost completely, but I still suffer from pain quite badly. I shall have a go at upping my water intake and see if that helps.

Hi Jan, thanks for replying. I suffer from muscular aches and pains in my neck, back and limbs as a result of ME. There's no quick fix for making the pain go away, so was just wondering if there was something I could include in my diet to help address it. I have found dietary changes to help a great deal with my fatigue.
