I'm not a great fan of gyms. But when I learned I was going to be spending 6 weeks in London I thought what the hell? Virgin Active have a great 'pay-as-you-go' monthly membership, which was perfect for me.
Having not been in a gym since 2005 I was amazed to discover the new addition, the power plate. At Virgin Active Wandsworth they have lunch time power plate classes that last about half an hour, which is ideal if you only have an hour's break!
I also tried the aqua aerobics class which was fun and dynamic.
At the end of a workout you have the sauna and steam rooms and the jacuzzi to relax in.
Though it is not the biggest gym in the world it is perfectly adequate and you've got everything you need.

I joined Virgin Active at the end of January and only recently made it to my home gym at Wandsworth. For the past month or so I have been using the Oxford Circus branch near work and this is generally pretty busy. Wandsworth on the other hand may be busy but because it is so large, it never feels packed and there are always machines free, which is wonderful. The machines are all very modern, there is a great deal of space, a good sized swimming pool and jacuzzi, 2 studios and a spinning room. As soon as I enter the gym, I feel very motivated. the music in the corridor leading up to the entrance helps and the general environment is just a lot more conducive to pumping you up than other big name gyms I've been a member at in the past.
I haven't used the pool yet, but am looking forward to getting my feet wet and blowing off the cobwebs with a good swim. I believe it's 25m, which is a good size for a local gym.
Of all the gyms in the area (and I've tried them all) Virgin Active is certainly the best I've been to. It's not cheap, but it's still less than Esporta and has better facilities than Fitness First and they don't tie you in to a contract, which ranks them very highly in my books.
