I went for a a one-hour tennis lesson at Duke's Meadows with Eva or Evi Titkos http://www.wahanda.com/pro/EviTitkos/details/ . It was a beautiful day, so I was very glad to be playing outdoors on the clay surface courts. I am basically a beginner so Evi first assessed my forehand & backhand, then also ran through my serve.
She was fantastic in really trying to make me understand the proper technical elements of the stroke to improve my consistency and also instill the proper techniques (and rid me of my bad habits as well!)
It was a fantastic lesson and I am eager to go for my next one. I paid £30 for the lesson, plus there is a £10 per hour court usage fee, so in terms of cost it definitely can get pricey very quickly. I wish they also had a tennis practice wall which would make it ideal for refining & practicing. The coffee in the Duke's Meadows cafe was fantastic, and I finished off my lesson by hitting a bucket of golf balls which was fun & convenient. I would also highly recommend Evi as an instructor as well - she is patient and very knowledgeable.

Dukes Meadow is a really great, 9-hole course that is quick and easy to get to from Central London. It doesn't require a long haul out to the country or a full day committment for a round of golf. I tend to shy away from golf becasue of the significant time committment, but I will defintiely play here again since we got through a round with 3 guys in just over an hour. Its inexpensive, as far as golf goes, and they have a decent bar and a place to eat after your round. They also have a nice practice range and indoor/outdoor tennis facilities.
Make sure you have golf shoes and a set of clubs or else they won't let you on. Don't try and sneak on with tennis shoes since they fully inspect your kit prior to the first tee.

I would love to try golf but I am getting the impression that Dukes is probably not suitable for beginners, is that correct?

The Dukes Meadows 9 hole Par 3 course is a perfect way to play a round of golf without committing the entire day to travel and playing a full 18 holes. The Chiswick Bridge Driving range is also very good in case you just want to hit a few balls. The place is nicer after a recent refurbishment where they added clay & hardcourt tennis courts - indoor & outdoor. They also redid the cafe and pro-shop, so the entire place is really nice.
It can be a little hard to find, but its a very nice course and I really enjoy playing here. Its always well-groomed and plays quickly. Definitely worth checking out. The buckets for the range are £5 each which is steep, and the green fees are about £17 each. You need to wear a collared shirt and must have golf shoes, so be forewarned - otherwise, you cannot get on the course.
