Beauty Schools and Institutes

Beauty Schools

Beauty schools and institutes are where student hairdressers and beauticians go to hone their skills and learn to be cunning cutters, fantastic facialists and daring dermatologists. A beauty school may also be known as a cosmetology school, school of beauty, beauty training institute, hair academy or hair school.

And they’re not just a wonderful facility for teaching. Visit your local training academy and you’ll find a world of wonderful treatments at your fingertips. After all, even the most talented cosmetology school pupils need to practice their skills on someone, and you get to play guinea pig. Hair and beauty academies can be found all over the country, some of the most famous being The London College of Beauty Therapy, London Esthetique Student Salon and the Rouge Make Up School.

Now for the best part - treating yourself at one of these awesome academies needn’t cost the earth. In fact, many of them charge between 30% and 70% off standard salon prices for pamper treatments. Wahanda have even come across some super beauty schools providing hair colouring services at cost price. It’s not just basic cuts and colours either - treatments available are as diverse as you could wish for. On any given day you could try perming, facials, massage, aromatherapy, threading, waxing, spray tanning, eyelash extensions, hair extensions or even something a bit more daring such as acupuncture.

Being a school, facilities are unlikely to be as pretty as they would in a day spa or Mayfair salon, however they will still be using the highest standards of equipment and products to ensure that you get the best possible results, whatever your treatment. Students are never allowed to carry out a treatment unsupervised unless extremely experienced and completely capable. There is usually a tutor hovering over their shoulder to ensure not only that you are satisfied, but that the student is comfortable.

Generally colleges and academies fall into three categories; those that deal exclusively with beauty therapy, those that are hotspots for hair and those that cater for both areas. Many of the hairdressing academies are sponsored by big-name styling houses like Toni & Guy and Rush. The students at these colleges are the future stylists of these brands and therefore receive the best, high fashion training. A top tip is that hairdressing students love the opportunity to try something new, so if you’ve always fancied a really funky cut or colour or even want a complete style overhaul, you’re more likely to find a stylist as adventurous as you here than you are anywhere else.

Beauty or ‘cosmetology’ schools tend to be independent and run a huge variety of treatments at any one time. You could even have all your beauty needs tended to in one go, making a beauty college the perfect budget alternative to a spa day when cash is tight. If you so wish, talented, smartly uniformed (yes, they even dress like professionals) therapists will wax, thread or pluck every hair until you are a complete depilation station. For pore perfection perhaps a facial is in order, followed by a relaxing massage. Some colleges even teach alternative therapies, so you might find that your high tech IPL laser hair removal is being performed in the same building as Reiki or aromatherapy.

Beauty and hairdressing schools are an ideal way to get the celebrity look you love at a price that won’t break the bank. Not only can you get the same high quality, effective treatments as you would in a salon, but you’ll be helping the next generation of clever cosmetologists to hone their trade. After a good deed like that, you deserve a little treat....
