Holmes Place plc is an operator of luxury health and fitness clubs at the premium end of the market and has evolved dramatically since its inception in the old Plumber Merchants off Fulham Road, London, in 1980.
The first indication of the company’s aspiration was displayed in 1992 with the acquisition of The Barbican Club in The City of London. Since that initial venture, all the clubs have been conceived and developed for the most discerning enthusiasts who appreciate the qualities of style and exclusivity in a health and fitness club.
At the end of 1999, Holmes Place operated 53 health clubs across Greater London, the Southeast and overseas, with 18 clubs opening across Europe throughout 2000. The buoyant health and fitness market has led to an increase in memberships, resulting in a total of around 130,000 members throughout Europe. Underpinning this strategic expansion has been the increased returns produced by the existing clubs year on year, allowing Holmes Place to consolidate its exclusive lifestyle positioning.
In addition to the rapidly increasing number of private members clubs, Holmes Place also provides health and fitness services for the general public. Holmes Place Leisure Management currently works with a variety of partners from local authority to hotel operators and corporate clients.
Originally from Chelsea, London, the company has expanded to European level and beyond, with clubs in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Israel, Greece, Spain and Portugal.
